"Peace, order, and good chat about government."  Or, more simply, "Peace, order, and good government?  Talk about it here."

Quick question. Is there a deadline? Thanks

This is my favourite entry so far.

Piss, ordure and good shat-about government, if that isn't too crude.

Ok -- this is my favorite!

Can we raise the length from 50 to 5000 characters?

Actually this is good as well -- like if you are not at the table, you are on the menu.

I like the direction this phrase is going in. But I can’t say I honestly completely understand the second part of politics talks about you? Perhaps you can elaborate a little more Mobo2000. Would you be flexible in changing your phrasing a little?

It's a free translation of a very well-known French expression: "Si tu ne t'occupes pas de la politique, la politique s'occupera de toi." It's a call to activism. First appearance I've seen is in a book called "Le peril national", by Raoul Frary - published 1883!

Hard to convey the full meaning. Could be like: "If you don't pay attention / get involved in politics, it'll bite you in the ass."

How about: "If you don't take up politics, politics will take you down!"

I dunno. I like the French, and would love to find a good English equivalent.

Based on Unionist's info, I found this quote by Pericles.

Brilliant find! Thanks, Michael. Don't think I'll find an older version than that.

Mobo2000

Yes, that was the original I was thinking of.   There is a good quote from Pericles about just about everything.

@Michael Mobo Unionist

Oh OK that makes sense there was something lost in translation or the translation wasn't exact. That's clever using a phrase from another language and translating it. That opens the door wide open to tweaking the phrase to common English political jargon and/or Canadian political climate 2018. I still like the first part of the phrase as how Mobo translated it, but still the second part of politics taking interest/talking about or noticing people seems too far seperated from reality. Everyone knows that politicians(or a big chunk of them) takes the interest of the corporate wealthy 1% over everyone else. So Unionist's translation of the second part of activism fits better there.

While I am still holding out for Sausage Making, I could see myself coming to terms with Ken's Fluffy suggestion.

They still "take interest in you," by enriching the 1% on the backs of the middle class and the working poor.  They try to squeeze you as cheap labour.

Fair enough. But part of what I'm refering to in Mobo 2000's first phrase that caught my eye. The second part, where politics talks about you (I should have been a little more clear and specific). The word "politics" itself is a noun but not a person or thing that is capable of independent speech or at the very least capable of stringing a verbal responce countering our statements or lack of.

I still like Mobo 2000's direction, maybe I'm being to fussy? Maybe not?

True.  Perhaps "politicians" would be a better fit.

Ironic considering only a male elite could participate. I suspect that women could have changed that to be:

One of the penalties for not being allowed to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.

Congrats, Mobo!!! Well deserved.

But that translation provided by "one of our rabble.ca staff" sounds extremely familiar.

As they say, imitation is the highest form of flattery - so thanks to your staff member!

I know, it's almost identical to the translation you proposed. Sorry I didn't mention that, and thanks!

Ha, I'll send you a share for partial credit, Unionist!
