"To avoid coup?"

Their bold attack turned the Maute siblings, who are in their mid-30s, into the most infamous high school alumni of the Protestant Church-run institution, which had been a symbol of religious tolerance in the mostly Muslim city of 200,000 people.

It seems apparent that this Xian missionary school, doing Christ's work was seen much differently by some of those who benefited from the education it offered. My guess is they didn't like having to go to the Xian school and we know that there was proselytizing involved no matter whether it was subtle or overt.

And this is why they grew up to despise proselytizing and forced conversion, and vowed to fight it in all of its many forms.  LOL.

So do you also find residential schools a big joke?

Not at all.

I just think it's funny that someone who resented prosyletizing and forced conversion would end up standing arm-in-arm with ISIS.  Because ISIS is all about freedom and tolerance!  They'll help the Mautes put an end to religious oppression!!

I think it is within the norm of behaviour of people who have survived abuse but thats merely an opinion. Abuse causes many reactions and so does heavy indoctrination by people you have come to believe in.  I personally have a hard time imagining a Xian school that does not include the real possibility of abuse occurring especially if it is run by people who are not from the community that the children are from. If one explores their roots and the journey leads to a radical jihadist mentor burning down a symbol from your hometown makes sense.

ISIS sees Southeast Asia as its new battleground and is encouraging its followers to go to Marawi. The ability of its fighters to hold onto to Marawi into the third month, makes ISIS feel Southeast Asia, which has more Moslems than the Middle East with nearby Indonesia alone containing more than 200 million Moslems,  is fertile ground for its ideology.

A United States official said there is a need to recognize terror group ISIS as a global issue, adding that it is "gaining a foothold" in the Philippines.

"I think our next steps on the global war to defeat ISIS are to recognize ISIS is a global issue. We already see elements of ISIS in the Philippines, as you're aware, gaining a foothold. Some of these fighters have gone to the Philippines from Syria and Iraq," U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a White House briefing on Tuesday, U.S. time.

Tillerson said they are talking to the Philippine government, along with Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia as "partners to recognize (the) threat."

This partnership includes training law enforcement, and sharing of intelligence, among others.

Tillerson is part of the delegates that will come to the Philippines this week, in line with the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) Regional Forum.

The United States has assisted the Philippine military with the ongoing crisis in Marawi, through intelligence and technical support.

According to the government (which must be taken with large grains of salt especially since US and Philippine air and artillery bombardment has largely destroyed the city making civilian casualties almost certainly many times higher)

On Friday, military spokesperson Brigadier General Restituto Padilla said operations against the terrorists were confined to only less than a square kilometer within Marawi.

The military on Thursday said around 50 to 70 Maute extremists are still holed up in the besieged city.

Fighting between government forces and Maute extremists in Marawi City broke out on May 23 and has left at least 674 dead, among them 513 terrorists, 116 state forces, and 45 civilians.

voice of the damned

And how did it happen under a Philippine President who just last year lambasted the US for its crimes against the Moro people of Mindanao during the bloody US occupation of the Philippines?

You mean you can't trust a vigilante death-squad kingpin to conduct a principled foreign-policy? Sheesh, what's the world coming to?
