Political ad takes a turn for the strange

Carly Fiorina, a former CEO of dubious success wants to be the Republican candidate for Senate in California. Her campaign has created this rather long advertisement to use against her opponent in the primary, accusing him of not being a real Republican. Not much new there, or in the first half of the ad - then it gets weird.

I'm still wondering why so many Republicans think Carly Fiorina is an attractive fugure either as a candidate or as an advisor.

Her reign at Hewlett-Packard was a disaster that damaged one of the legendary companies of Silicon Valley.

What's really disturbing is that she is spending money to attack Tom Campbell, the grand old moderate of the Grand Old Party in California. The nominee's are chosen at the convention not in a statewide vote, so why buy TV time? It seems that Fiorina is so desperate that she's trying to stir up fanatics to attack Campbell at the convention.

This is scary, Tom Campbell is one of the most decent and intelligent voices in the GOP in California.

Decent and intelligent doesn't win you that many votes on that side of the political spectrum anymore.

I believe the nominee is chosen in a primary

As political spectacles go, the word from Scott Lee Cohen, a Chicago pawnbroker, that he would drop out was not so surprising, since his campaign had been overwhelmed by questions about steroid use and allegations of domestic abuse against a former girlfriend with a conviction for prostitution. Mr. Cohen’s expression of tearful regret while surrounded by supportive family members followed a familiar script. But as Frank James noted on NPR’s news blog, the time and place Mr. Cohen chose to make the announcement — the Hop Haus tavern on the Far North Side, during the Super Bowl — made this one of the “strangest exits many of us who’ve covered politics over the years have ever seen.”

Here is a brief slice of Mr. Cohen’s announcement at the Hop Haus, made while his son sobbed into his chest:
