I would like to allay Americans’ fears about the healthcare system in Canada with the hope that our neighbours to the south can improve their system to ensure every citizen has access to basic health care.

The vast majority of Canadians place tremendous value on our public and universal health care system.  The government does not dictate who gets what treatment.  The Canada Health Act simply ensures that everyone has access and our medical professionals (all are in a private practice) help patients to decide on the best course of action.

It’s extremely comforting to know that we won’t lose everything, and that our families won’t suffer as well, when we get sick.  The freedom to quit a job that is dissatisfying, and to pursue a career that is, because we know that our health will not be jeopardized by doing so, is liberating.

Because we are all in this together, I sincerely hope that profits will not win out over the needs of the American people.
