*The title: “Don’t Wear Black” is meant to be a tongue-in-cheek reference in reaction to the G20 police’s targeting of anyone wearing black during June 25-27, 2010. One of my friends was harassed for wearing black during that weekend and he told the cops: “what do you want from me, everyone on Queen Street wears black!”

Begin Fwd Message:

DON’T WEAR BLACK is now accepting submissions and proposals from artists, creators and communicators on the subject of the Toronto G20 and the actions of the police during that weekend and the week leading up to it. The deadline for entries is October 1, 2010.

Submissions and proposals are encouraged from all disciplines and approaches, from fine arts and visual arts to literature and performance to social media and other communications. We will also be contacting specific artists, creators and communicators either to incorporate existing works that fall within the scope of this event, or to commission works exclusively for this event.

We have a special interest in seeing submissions and proposals for the following sessions and exhibits:

–Movement/performance

–Readings: fiction, poetry, articles, blog entries, social media

–Fine arts/visual arts/graphic arts/comics/printwork

–Photo/video/film/sound

–Web-based media

–Mobile communications

–Geocaching and location-based technology

–Site installation/performance/interaction

–Crafted and manufactured items, zines and comics, other saleable items for a merchandise table

–Works from all disciplines suitable for presentation on the DON’T WEAR BLACK website or associated websites

In addition, if you have original citizen video or citizen photography (i.e. that you personally have created or captured) from the Toronto G20 depicting police actions during that period, and your video or photography is not currently posted on youtube, flickr or any other online site, please let us know-we’d like to see it and see if we can incorporate it into the event in some form.

Our current plan is to pay each artist/creator/participant a $100 honorarium. In certain circumstances, primarily with commissions, we will pay for some expenses associated with the creation, transportation and presentation of creative works.

As we are expecting to receive more entries than we will realistically be able to exhibit over the course of the event, a selection committee convened by the event organizers will determine which entries are exhibited, in what session, in what format and under what circumstance. Work is selected on the basis of creative and technical excellence, its representation of the event’s theme and topic and its anticipated impact on the event audience. The decision of the selection committee is final.

The online entry form is essential, and must be completed and submitted online no later than October 1, 2010. No other method of entry will be accepted. Note that artworks and creative submissions need not be submitted along with the entry form. However, artworks and creative submissions must be complete and ready for consideration by October 10, 2010 at the very latest.

Artworks and creative submissions can have any language version. Non-English versions must have subtitles/description and one written page synopsis in English.

By submitting an entry to this event, each applicant declares that s/he is entitled to dispose of all rights to the use of the entry and vouches for these rights to this event. The entrant warrants that the rights of use held by all authors, owners of ancillary copyrights and other parties involved in the production of the festival entry have been acquired in a due and proper manner. (Except for the rights safeguarded by the performing rights societies.)

The exploitation of the entry is not barred by personality rights or other third party rights in any manner whatsoever. Applying for this event, the entrant transfers his/her use rights to the entry; specifically, he/she allows the event organization DON’T WEAR BLACK to display the entry in public exhibitions (either whole or in part, or to distribute the entry whole or in part on a ‘Festival Reel’ or similar promotional vehicle). All aforementioned transfers of use shall be of worldwide validity. DON’T WEAR BLACK is encouraging all entrants to license their entries via the Creative Commons website at www.creativecommons.org.

Entrants, please note: Certain works and performances be streamed live to the internet during the event; certain works and performances will be recorded and made available after the event on the internet; certain works and performances will be accompanied by online commentary via live-blogging on the internet. In all instances, comments and other contributions from online audiences may be posted in association with these works and performances.
