rabble.ca's looking for your 2008 predictions

As part of our end of the year coverage here at rabble.ca, we're looking for readers and babblers to send in their predictions for 2008 to editor[at]rabble.ca.

Roughly speaking, we'd like your predictions to stick to matters of news and politics, but you should also feel free to speculate on whether this will finally be the year the Canucks or the Leafs win the Stanley Cup, whether Ryan Gosling will win an Oscar for his performance in Lars and the Real Girl, and other pressing matters.

We'll select the best predictions (serious or tongue-in-cheek) and include them in a special feature that will go up on December 31.

Dubya will pardon Dick right after he pardons himself.

Pride for Red D...

the Bali talks will be about as effective in reducing grren house gas emissions as Kyoto is in Canada.

When an election is called and the Conservatives fall and the NDP and Liberals (minority government- I was gonna say NDP but that's too much of a pipe dream) the status of women will be reinstated. I will be very happy.

Indiana Jones

My predictions for 2008:

1. There is a federal election and the results are pretty much exactly the same as last time - another Harper minority.

2. Dion resigns in embarassment as Liberal leader and is replaced by Michael Ignatieff

3. Barack Obama is elected president of the United States

4. The Blue Jays make the playoffs. The Leafs do not.

5. My wife and I welcome our first child into the world.

WTF is this thread doing here.

I predict babble shuts down the anti-racism and feminism thread out of embarressment.

Maysie Maysie's picture

I think I'll move this thread to babble banter.

Michelle

Just opening this briefly to respond to this and then I'll close it again - and then I'll move the new thread to rabble features since Derrick is asking for input for a rabble feature. (Sorry BCG!)

WTF is this thread doing here? I assume Derrick put it here because he's very new to using babble software and didn't realize he was posting it in the anti-racism forum - perhaps that was the last forum he was reading.

I don't see why we would shut down anything "out of embarrassment" because a brand new employee put something out of place by accident. It's an easy mistake to make. I encouraged Derrick in the last editorial meeting a couple of days ago to not be shy about posting on babble, and that he would be more than welcome - please don't make a liar out of me.

Michelle

I predict that this won't be the year for the Leafs.

Sorry Michelle and to Derrick. I'm having a bad day.

Thanks for moving that over, Michelle. I predict that in 2008 the new rabble editor will learn his way around babble...

In the 2008 US presidential election, the Democratic Edwards / Richardson ticket will narrowly defeat the Republican Huckabee / McCain ticket.

The Anglican churches in Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and the Southern Cone of America will place themselves out of the Anglican Communion by refusing to participate in the decennial Lambeth Conference of Bishops. The split will be over "THE" issue (ie, the place of gays and lesbians in the life of the Church).

6) Global warming continues
7) I'll have to pay $1.35/litre for gas at some point.

1) No, and this sure seems alot less likely for '08.
2) Yes. I'd say.
3) Oh fuck.
4) Double fuck.
5) I think I'm kind of correct here...
6) Duh.
7) Stopped using my car.
8) Started taking the bus.

Sports predictions:

1) a)The Vancouver Canucks finish first in the Northwest division, disproving Steppenwolf's prediction before 2007 even starts. b)Albertan hockey fans suffer a collective aneurysm. c)No Canadian hockey team moves past the first round.

2) The Toronto Raptors, with a record of a)38-44, b)finish 9th in the Eastern Conference, but c)first in the Atlantic division, earning a spot in the playoffs. d)They are subsequently crushed in the first round.

3) a)Canada wins the World Juniors, b)Crosby wins his first of at least 12 Art Ross trophies scoring 135 points, and c)Anaheim wins the cup. d)JS Giguere is the Conn Smythe winner.

4) The Yankees purchase the entire roster of the Toronto Blue Jays, and make them thier AAA squad. They still lose the world series to Boston, who purchased the Orioles.

5) Tiger wins 2 majors and 8 events overall.

1a) Check. Quite a brilliant prediction here, considering the Canucks were LAST in the division at this point.
b) Big check.
c) Nope. Ottawa and Vancouver make it to rounds 3 and 2.

2a) 47-35
b) 4th
c) Check
d) Loses 4-2 to the Nets.

3a) Check!
b) Check, but with only 120 points
c) Holy shit! I guessed RIGHT?!?!
d) Scott Niedermayer

4) Sarcasm aside. Yankees lose in the first round to Cleveland, who go on get beaten by World Series champions the Boston Red Sox. Not bad at all.

5) 1 major (2 runner-ups) and 6 wins.

Hey WCG, usually I'm the one to get all my predictions wrong. (Thus my no-brainer sports prediction above.)

The Wizard of S...

I thought we were supposed to e-mail in our predictions and only the best ones would be posted. I've been working on obscure quatrains for days now, and I'm not just gonna waste them on a normal post. That's like putting Demi-glace on McCain french fries. I won't do it. I can't. I'd rather pour it down the sink first.

Considering here on the Quebec Labrador coast we are in the coldest December in living memory, I'd say 2008 will usher in the last Ice Age. Start storing up on blankets, fuel, and generators, now!

Skinny Dipper

An major upsetting event will happen in Toronto. Hopefully this prediction will not come true.

Because of the above, Harper will win a majority.

Supermodel Enza Anderson will start the Toronto Standard magazine that blends chique and kitsch. The magazine will fail. In 2009, she'll get her own TV talk show on the Toronto channel that no one watches (Channel 15 on Rogers).

A homophobic Canadian politican will get caught with his pants down with another dude.

The winning numbers in the first Super 7 draw in July will be 2, 8, 9, 23, 35, 39, 42. Bonus 14.

I'll forget to buy a ticket.

No predictions, just a wish:

A Williams vs Layton showdown election.

A match between two giants who are not only coherent, but passionate, committed and accomplished.

fins are crossed...

Cool blog. Cool handle too, btw. It made me laugh because it reminded me of this one time I was gettin' funky with a date in the fountain on the east side of the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly Building. I still can't believe security didn't roust us. With the exception of ruining a brand new pair of Rockports in the water, it was a good night.

- Ron Paul shocks everyone in the Republican primaries, finishing very near, perhaps above, double digits.
- He still loses though, to Mike Huckabee
- Who, in turn, is crushed by a Clinton-Obama ticked, which wins over 300 electoral votes.
- Oh, yeah. That Ron Paul guy nets over 5% for the Libertarian Party.

Meanwhile, in Canada
- In a March election, Harper earns another, smaller minority, dropping 5 seats.
- The Liberals improve slightly, winning 10 seats. Dion is turfed. Iggy becomes the new leader and the Liberals immediately push ahead of the Conservatives in the polls.
- The NDP pick up about 5 seats. Layton stays on. They start flirting with the 20% mark after Iggy is elected.
- The Bloc lose 10 seats, Duceppe retires, and things REALLY start going downhill for them.
- The Greens pick up one. Not in Central Nova, but in Vancouver Centre. They hover at 10%.

- Alberta politics continue to be more interesting thand BC politics.
- BC looks like it did in 07... and 06, with James trailing Campbell by ten points
- The PC win reelection (with record low turnout), with the Liberals picking up many seats in Calgary. Stelmach is turfed, and a new leadership race between Morton and Dinning threatens to tear the party in two.
- You know what? I'm predicting the party DOES get torn in two.

Noise

-Alberta election early in the year, Conservatives remain in power though urban centers largely reject them (Some NDP in Edmonton, Calgary may largely turn to Liberals).

-No Canadian federal election in '08... Alot of posturing though.

(This one I'll go out on a limb for)
- Environmental cause transcends the partisan nature (IE, the Cons finally embrace it... To what extent remains to be seen).

(and then cling to to the trunk)
- Despite the new status, nothing gets done except maybe a few canadians gaining a warm fuzzy feeling of acomplishment when we've done nothing.
