post:The CJC's disingenuous stance

The free speech debate continues at the national post. The jury is still out in my mind but this latest artcile by Colby Cosh (as hard right as they get)seems more of an attack on the CJC than the CHRA.

This episode has gone from a minority group defending themselves against vituperative attacks by those bastions of self rightousness Levant and Steyn to an attack on the CJC.

Why?

quote:

Yesterday, Bernie Farber and Len Rudner, two officials of the Canadian Jewish Congress, were given space in these pages to defend Canadian human rights law from the frequent criticisms it has received from National Post editorialists and contributors. Why would a newspaper do such a thing? Because unlike Messrs. Farber and Rudner, it believes that a wide-open marketplace of competing ideas is the best guarantee a liberal democracy has against the spread of noxious and nonsensical doctrines. I suppose that after the authors' naked pandering to fears of violence and vandalism, and their hilariously revealing hints at possessing some special expertise in the super-sciency-sounding field of "antihate," one could say, "Q.E.D., gentlemen," and be done with the subject.

How interesting, a right wing gear job attacks cjc. He clearly is bordering on racism by identifying the Seattle shooter as a Muslim and insinuating that was the reason for the shooting.

Cosh then just engages in an ad hominem attack against farber and rudner whose original piece yesterday was rational even placid but certainly did not engage in the character assasination that Colby thought would be helpful to his agenda.

Like jpj Im still not convinced that Section 13 of the CHRC is the best written reg. It needs tightening, it needs to be cleaned up.It seems the cjc is also in agreement. It certainly spoke out against the complaints lodged on levant and steyn.

So where do my fellow babblers stand? Shall we join hands with ultra right winger Cosh and get on the "pummel cjc" bandwagon? Or do we find a way to support Human rights commissions while at one in the same time acknowledging that changes need to be made?

A false dichotomy. And baiting. Hopefully no one will fall for it and imitate this nasty tone. Please, folks, just let it go.

P.S. I agree that this article is right-wing Muslim-baiting and racist as all get out.

I think Mercutio had this dichotomy figured out a few centuries ago.

Even though Michelle states not to fall for it. Ohara did raise an interesting point.

The point is can we find good in an organization that some on babble detest because their defense of an issue is of major importance to our society.

I think that we can.

I found this quote from the article intersting.

quote:

What the CJC fails to appreciate is that any belief about the changing quantity of hostility in Canadian society is compatible with strong views in favour of free speech.

If anyone is baiting here its you Michelle. ohara's questions are not asked it seems to me in any nasty way and they are legit.

However I wish to lean more towards jpj's question. The NP is as right wing as they come. Colby Cosh was a writer for the ultra right Alberta Report and this attack on cjc has nothing I believe to do with free speech as much as it does with Muslim baiting.Just take a look at the NP's on-line comments on the original cjc article yesterday. It seems every neo-Nazi with a computer crawled out from under its rock to email a post.

aka Mycroft

It is a bit bizarre that Steyn, Levant and Kay are uniformly taking the logical leap of attacking the CJC and Richard Warman over complaints made against Steyn and Levant that have nothing to do with the organization. It's ever odder that they are so determined that they are even taking counsel from people like Marc Lemire and Paul Fromm adopting wholesale arguments that have been made on Stormfront for months. Kay is so gullible he didn't realize the background of Bernard Klatt and accepted him as a credible impartial expert until someone took him aside and revealed that the guy is an Aryan Nations supporter with a strong motivation to lie.

What's driving this?

Actually, I think the Seattle shooter, himself, identified the shooter as Muslim and insinuated that that was the reason for the shooting.

Seems like a false choice to me. Can't we do both?
