Hi everyone!

AmericanWoman

As my name indicates, I'm from the U.S., so I'm really looking forward to an Obama win on Tuesday.

I'm interested in Canadian boards, and what you all think about the issues, because I appreciate having you as our neighbor, and I'm always interested in learning more about your country, too.

'Ello, Eh?

Well, most of us do not own snowshoes or sled dogs

We actually have more computers per capita than practically anywhere with the possible exception of Sweden.

We complain about our healthcare system all the time. Not because we hate it, but because we love it and want it to be even better.

We get to marry whoever we want providing they're of legal age to consent.

We can smoke medical marjuana.

We argue a lot but we're pretty civilized about it for the most part, because deep down, we kind of like each other, even when we don't agree.

Hmmmm I think that's about all, for a Sunday afternoon.

Welcome aboard!

I own snowshoes. I thought we all did. Aren't they government issue?

I'm curious, have you ever met Burton Cummings?

AmericanWoman

Thanks for the welcome, everyone. I'm not sure how you get around if you don't all have snow shoes, but then, you probably don't stray too far from the igloo in the winter. Which is basically 10 months out of the year, right? haha. I acutally live further north than some of you Canadians, so I know better than to believe all the stereotypes. Especially the one about your beer being better. heh heh.

And no, Slumberjack-- I haven't ever met Burton Cummings. But I'm curious, do you know John from Toronto?

So I suppose there's no point in asking whether Buck in Wyoming finally got his horse re-shoed?

Hi AmericanWoman,

I will be sitting down on Tuesday evening with a bowl of popcorn to watch your election! Nice to meet you

We do, however, contribute greatly to global warming by driving our kids all over the landscape in the middle of winter blizzards so their team doesn't forfeit a minor league hockey game. That might also be a male pride thing, except that most of the mad drivers are hockey moms.

So, although Sarah Palin is clearly no Hilary Clinton, some of us do have a twinge of sympathy for pit bulls with lipstick. I've met more of them than I can count at our local rink. Outside the rink, they're mostly very intelligent and sensible. Except when driving through blizzards . . .

I live further north than folks in Montreal and Toronto, and I have not only snowshoes but also a skidoo. And a chain saw, log splitter, many axes, and a wood-burning furnace. We have two seasons here: winter and not-quite-winter.

I know, it's so funny. Who would have thought a dotted line on a map could mean the difference between iconic and obscurity, even for poor ole Burton.

actually, we can legally marry people under the age of consent, within limits, if we have their parent's / guardian's consent.

In my part of Ontario, we have a joke so old I would never dare repeat it except to a fresh audience. Canada has four seasons: winter, more winter, still winter, and road construction.

AmericanWoman

Nooooooooooo, I'm not Sarah.

But the popcorn idea sounded so good, RosaL, I just stopped by the movie theater and picked up a large buttered popcorn which I will enjoy with a couple of diet cokes to keep me awake until I know who won-- this isn't an election I'm going to wait until morning to find out about.

Oh. and in regards to the road construction joke ... we have that same joke about a few of our states, too. haha. I think we Americans and Canadians are more alike than different. And I think that's totally cool.

Again, thanks for the welcome, everyone.

And just to set your mind at ease, TVParkdale, Buck did finally get his horse re-shoed.

Welcome, Sarah! (We'll just call you that for short. Okay, just kidding, we won't really!)

Seriously though, nice to see you, and make yourself at home! (And if the Republicans manage to steal the election again this year, I'm sure we've got some couches for you... )

But then that is the center of the universe speaking. It snows where I live about twice a year and disappears within days. I have always thought that anyone who wants snow can just drive up a mountain.

I may be an old guy but I like Lenny's better than Burton's.

Woman sorry Randy, Lenny does it better on guitar So the person who thought that when American Woman said she lived further north than many Canadians was in Alaska I would like to award you the Stockwell Day Geography Prize.

Thanks!-- along with a big *whew* sigh-of-relief that the Republicans didn't even come close this election year.

And "kropotkin1951" -- thanks for the link-- I enjoyed it. I'd never heard that version of American Woman before.

Welcome American Woman. My name may throw you off, but, I am not an American. As Canadian as most everyone else here-- just with an admiration for American founding fathers.

I'm really glad you came to explore a Canadian left wing political message board.....

Because when you go screaming for the exit, you might remember to take me with you!!!!

Please! Please!

AmericanWoman

Why am I going to go screaming for the exit? And exactly where would I be going once exiting?-- If I'm going to take you with me, I think it's important to know where I'm going.

Tommy_Paine

It was just my way of acquainting you with the Canadian penchant for self effacing humour. Humour drives most everything we do in this country.

In fact, did you know that Stephen Colbert is just a rip off of marginally Canadian David Frum's act? Frums been staying in character and pillorying the right with carefully crafted satire for decades now.

AmericanWoman

Oh, okay! Now I get it.

And no, I didn't know about David Frum's act. I don't suppose I could catch it on CBC?

Tommy_Paine

Actually, I just watched David on the BBC where they were giving him a platform doing Post Mortems on the Republican Party.

Just wanted to pop in to say hi and to let you all know that David Frum makes my blood pressure rise.

Weren't you a CBC blogger in the last Saskatchewan provincial election? It's great to have you on board!Smile

Oh. and in regards to the road construction joke ... we have that same joke about a few of our states, too. haha.

Those four lane interstates are for sissies. I wouldnt trade being chased down a twisting, winding stretch o highway by an overloaded logging truck behind schedule for almost anything.

Oh ya, and in Northern Ontario, we have Irish-Canuck weather. Four seasons in one day even. Top that you other hosers.Tongue out

I say "A", say "M" Say "E" Innocent

remind remind's picture

Why does regina mom have a member number of 67?

Fidel

67 is the loneliest number that you'll ever do. 68 can be as bad as 67 It's the loneliest number since the number 67?

bobblehead

Posting to see what number I am.

remind remind's picture

Well I call BS, why do the new members have low numbers?

the regina mom the regina mom's picture

Yup, Aristotleded24, I did blog the Sask election last fall and the federal election here at rabble.  And I blog at the regina mom. I write occasionally for rabble, occasionally for the prairie dog and for Canadian Dimension.  All this is to subsidize my habit of poetry-writing which is probably the worst paid profession in the country.

remind, I'm #67 cuz I'm special!  ;-)

pogge

remind wrote:

Try this on for size though it's just speculation. During the development and testing they wanted to be able to add new members on the new site who weren't members on the old one. But they still wanted to allow people to join the old site right up to the changeover and have all those members come in when they moved the database over without any duplication. So the code that translated the old site's database added 1000 to everyone's ID number which effectively reserved the first 1000 ids for testing on the new site until the change. Of course 1000 was way more than they needed but in circumstances like that any experienced developer leaves way more room than he'll need. Now as each new person joins, she'll be assigned the next available number which will be a low one until that reaches 1000. Then it'll jump to the end of the numbers currently used.

Clear as mud?

So, pogge, are you saying I'm *not* special?  Cry

pogge

Sure you're special. Just not for the reasons you thought.

(Do we have one of those hiding under the chair smilies?)

Yep clear as mud!

A million appologies, American Woman.  Sometimes... my humour is dry.  David Frum (more's the pity) is not a comedian.   His mummy was a jounalist with the CBC, and he married well in the newspaper business.  This catapulted him into an unearned limelight, of sorts, in what passes for right wing discourse in Canada and in the United States.  So much so, he got hired as one of George W. Bush's speech writers, and suposedly coined the phrase "axis of evil".     Subsequent to that, Frum was fired, which in a classy move, he blamed on his wife.

Being fired as a speech writer by a man who can't speak, is a level of ineptitude that should from now on be eponymous.

Unfortunately, Mr. Frum is not hard to catch these days, doing Post Mortems on the Republican Party, as a expert pundit on T.V. shows that, apparently, don't know him that well.

Again, sorry for being such a tease.  You can call me names if you like.  In fact, you could say I deffinately "Frummed" this attempt at welcoming.
