Things I'd rather do than watch a homophobe and woman-hater pray for Obama

1. Pop my pimples

2. Pop other people's pimples

3. Food poisoning

4. Work

You?

Ghislaine

Ha! Funny thread....

I think I would still prefer hearing Rick Warren to food poisoning, but I agree with the others and would add:

 1. Wait in horrible traffic for hours

2. Walk to work in -35 temperatures

A self pedicure.  Now where did I put those tools.

I am going to exolate a retaining wall. My wife wants to watch just in case he is shot by some nutbar. It would be one of those "where were you when..." moments, JFK, 9/11, my birthday... "America's favourite 'motivational speaker' assassinated".

Michelle

I doubt that'll happen - they've got huge barriers made of bullet-proof glass all over the stage.

That said, though, I am kind of wondering whether I should watch just for the "where where you when" factor, too, just about the inauguration itself.

So I'm a bit confused.  Opinion of Obama seems to be pretty low, and his inauguration even lower, and yet for the past week and a half, a big banner with his smiling pic on it has been urging me to watch his inauguration on babble.

Is "babble" the centrist, sell-out twin, and "rabble" is the defiant, jaded one?

Or else why not take the banner down?  It doesn't look like advertising/revenue.  And it seems to be out of sync with the general consensus.

Perhaps a second banner, extolling the virtues of popping zits instead, just as counterpoint?

Ha!

Caissa

I'd rather watch the rest of the inaugaration activities.

Well, all I can say is I hope he does not get shot, because that would pretty much mean instant total dictatorship in the USA, and more bombing and killing. And besides, as far as I know, he hasn't done anything really bad to deserve such a thing... yet.

Snert Snert's picture

What kind of husband wouldn't want his wife to get her wish?

Think how exciting it would be!  I think I'm going to go practice how I'd tell my grandchildren.

"... one minute he's droning on about change, and then kablooie! Blood and bone spraying everywhere!..."

I was wondering the same thing Snert, why the banner then?

Someone could probably twist your words around pretty bad with this statement my friend.

And either way, should we really be talking about the president getting shot and watching it on TV?  Might seem trivial I don't know, just seems like something that can get out of hand (or bring negitive attention). Secret Service takes talking about shooting the president (even under a wide varity of context) pretty seriously.

Cueball Cueball's picture

It's not a wish. I don't recall anyone saying it was a wish. I said, "just in case" or something like that.

It would be, in fact, a horrifying event, which would have grave implications not only for the USA, but also the world.

Michelle

Snert, I don't understand what you're talking about.  rabble.ca (the web site) is broadcasting the inauguration on rabbletv.  That's what the banner ad is for.  There are lots of progressives who want to watch it, and it's huge news.  That's why rabble is covering it.  It would be ridiculous not to.

babble is a discussion forum where people can post their opinions about world events.  I just posted mine here, about Obama's choice of Rick Warren as the officiating clergy at today's event.

Is it all a little less confusing for you now?

I am not afraid of anything. Who said, "we have nothing to fear but fear itself"?

I think we must speak plainly. The possibility fo some white wing nutcase, deciding that his privilege has been compromised and going off on America's first black American president is high.

The consequences of that would be dire. For one thing it would be the perfect setting for the right to really suppress any dissent.

Shootings of presidents is high anyway. Nearly 10% of all US presidents have had someone try and assassinate them, 40% of those were succesful.

But your post insinuates that there might come a time where you feel there is justification in shooting him?  You're effectively condoning assassination?

I agree though the possibility is high that someone might try something dumb but still.

I appologize if I'm out in left field on this =)

I think its was Icebgovic who said something like, "if you kill one person you are a murderer, if you kill ten you are a serial killer and if you kill a thousand you get invited to a peace conference."

It would be "ridiculous" for rabble TV not to broadcast the inauguration?

Why is that, exactly?

Is the main stream media wall-to-wall telethon coverage not sufficient for our progressive purposes?

Is this a momentous event for the Canadian left that requires us all to watch, rather than popping pimples or doing laundry?

Is there the slightest chance that some Canadian leftist, somewhere, will fail to get the message that Barack Obomba is the messiah we have been waiting for?

oldgoat

Well I'm off work today, and I'm watching it.  Mind you I'm also doing a lot of other things at the same time, like getting my car serviced, cleaning, work related tedium, and keeping an eye on you bozos, but I am keeping an ear on the telly.

M. Spector M. Spector's picture

The telly? You mean, you're not watching rabble TV?

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I'm taking a break from shovelling snow - we had so much yesterday that it's now so deep I got stuck in my skidoo trying to make a path around the house this morning. As for Obama, I saw this on another forum, and it sounds reasonable to me:

"...Sunday's New York Time's lead story indicates that while Americans are hopeful about  Obama, they're also being realistic; they expect him to take at least a couple of years to get things straightened around."

Doug

I think that will probably be an opportune time to get up and pee at that time, but I'll gladly watch the rest of the inauguration.

Michelle

I might watch it on rabbletv after the invocation.  I'm still trying to decide whether I'm too ticked off at Warren being included to watch it at all or not.

Anyhow, it's not like we're getting the feed from FOX News or CNN.  We're getting it from Democracy Now.  And it's not like rabble is only running fawning coverage of Obama - there has been lots of criticism of him here on babble (including in this very thread).  Our lead article on rabble today also includes some criticism while acknowledging the importance of the day.

I don't think there's any reason for rabble not to do at least some coverage of this.  It's a huge deal.

Not at all!

I'm still not sure whether I should accept babble's invite, and watch the history-making inauguration of the first President of colour, or whether I should urge my co-workers to boycott this meaningless and pointless spectacle of evil.

It would have been so much easier if McCain had won.

Like hockey?  Where fans deeply and truly wish that nobody would ever fight on the ice... but just in case they do...

The desire to watch a fight, or a point-blank murder, is a natural one.

Doug

Oooh...Dick Cheney in a wheelchair! Now that was worth it!

Michelle

Wow, it's just so difficult to have to think about stuff like that and make a decision based on your own ideas!

It's rabble.ca's invite, by the way.  rabble.ca is inviting you to watch the inauguration on rabbletv.  babble, which is rabble.ca's discussion forum, is not "inviting" you or "telling" you to do anything.  One person who participates on babble - that would be me - is saying that I don't like Rick Warren and I don't want to watch him pray for Obama at the inauguration.

Gosh, it's just so hard to understand!  So complicated!

PS: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" is from FDR's inaugural address.

Mmmm, beer can barbecued chicken, rubbed with a mixture of six different spices.  I love the Food Network.  At the end of the segment though, the cook said that any sort of liquid in a can could be used, because the trick to it is the moisture that is released inside the chicken, not necessarily the beer flavour.  And then, it's on to intimate yoga techniques.  In between laundry and dishes, and a little bozo time on Babble, it's time well spent on a day off.

Doug

I thought he was going to talk *forever*. Yay Aretha! :)

Michelle

Since there's already a thread about Obama picking Rick Warren to give the invocation, let's continue discussion about that there, and continue discussion about the inauguration in general here.

Sorry for the duplicate thread, folks. :)
