Is a Nuke-Free World Possible?

From Der Spiegel:

"So, what will happen when a country is proven to have violated a ban on nuclear weapons? The biological and chemical weapons treaties give the UN Security Council the power to hold violators accountable. The NPT does not include such a provision, but signatories can call on the IAEA Board of Governors which in turn can go to the UN Security Council. Under its authority, sanctions can be applied or even military measures taken. The bottom-line question though is whether the Security Council would actually be prepared to act in the event of an obstinate offender."

I think that's the fundamental problem: The U.N. is wonderful at making grand pronouncements but it is structurally unable to act.

I think the following statement is equally true (and likely always will be): "The reality is that we live in a world with good and evil people, the strong and the weak, noble and criminal acts, with truth often hidden under deception and propaganda."

As such, I think that "the good" (whoever they may be) will never disarm given that there will always be "the bad" who will always be armed.

I think they(Teller and Strauss) got rid of Oppenheimer because he was opposed to nuclear weapons proliferation. And they've never looked back since.

Sven, what do you think of Ralph Nader's concerns that Livermore labs Berkeley has become an incubator for developing what could be the deadliest biological weapons in history? Soviet Union is gone, Sven. And everyone knows that the US has handed nuclear weapons technology to Asian and Middle Eastern countries. What's up with the colder war?
