Quote:
So brothers and sisters in that scenario that the President is reinstated and here I am speaking as a member of the team that is part of the independent people's candidacy of Carlos H. Reyes, because we have had meetings amongst the independent candidacy, the Democratic Unification Party, the part of the PINU party who is against the coup and the liberals against the coup, and we have decided that we should take a very mature step to carry forth a sole proposal as a presidential candidacy and this will be further defined and debated this week. Because if not, the same history will repeat brothers and sisters. This is something asked for by the resistance front, a all to us as political and electoral forces to create a coalition, a proposal that comes out as a consensus on one presidential candidate and a combo of congresspeople whether they are liberals against the coup, PINU, UD, as long as they are in the resistance that they are against the coup d'etat and that they have a position in favor of the national constitutional assembly, because the congress, brothers and sisters, is strategic. It is strategic. And we have to join forces not just the social ones because the social forces are also political because they make transformations, we need to push forward a process of joining political and social forces in favor of the installation of a national constitutional assembly. And also at the level of mayors. Basically the elections, if we participate, if they reinstate the President, would have to be between the resistance and the coup-makers, as simple as that brothers and sisters.

...

Quote:
So brothers and sisters, if there is a scenario, because with the coup-makers nothing is ever for sure, where they don't reinstate the President, then this country will approach a tremendous situation. Greater repression and violence, maybe even a civil war, which the people don't want, and then more isolation, etc, etc.. In all of these scenarios brothers and sisters, we only have one option. In all of them. In whichever one that happens. It is to struggle. It is to continue in the resistance. It is to march towards the re-founding of this country. Look, Morazán was something else. He talked about a lot of things that we are seeing come true now. Our path has to be that - the re-founding of the country to be more just, more humane, more equitable, with a constitution of the people. Mel said it, that re-founding the country doesn't just mean having a national constitutional assembly, no, it means in practice taking down all the forms of domination that the Honduran people have been under. That is re-founding the country. Taking down and removing those oligarchs and replacing them with the Honduran people, that is it and that is what we have to struggle for. Brothers and sisters in the name of the Front I am telling you, let's continue to strengthen our organization, let's not let down our guard, our capacity. The worst thing that could happen would be for them to cut off our initiatives, the creativity of the people and that strength that we have. That is the worst that could happen, let's not lose this historic opportunity and let's put light a fire like our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean say. We have to march through this process of emancipation and liberation that we as a Honduran people need and that millions of people have screamed out for, and I say millions because just in Tegucigalpa the 15th of September there were 800,000 people. And there have been mobilizations throughout the whole country.

Quote:
The National Front of Resistance Against the Coup declares to the Honduran people and the International Community

1. Since the midnight deadline of Thursday November 5th passed without the restitution of legitimate president Manual Zelaya, we declare we will actively not recognize the electoral process of 29 November of this year.

Elections which are imposed by a de facto regime that represses and violates the human and political rights of the citizenry would only validate nationally and internationally the oligarchical dictatorship and secure the continuation of a system which marginalizes and exploits popular sectors in order to guarantee the privileges of a few.

Participation in such a process would give legitimacy to the coup regime and to its successor which would be fraudulently installed on January 27, 2010.

...

Quote:
3. Now more than ever it is clear that the exercise of participatory democracy through the installation of a Constituent Assembly is not just a non-negotiable right but also the only way to provide the Honduran people with a democratic and inclusive political system.

It is clear that the resistance to the coup in Honduras is a revolutionary movement. Honduras is in a revolutionary situation, and I suspect that if the resistance does not win, the situation will end very badly, both for the Honduran people, and for the broader revolutionary movement in Latin America.

We owe the Honduran people our attention, our full support, and our full solidarity.

The new wave of death threats, political persecution, illegal detention, torture, militarization of some areas of the main cities and incursion of cars without license plates with tinted windows driven by heavily armed people with their faces covered by masks into neighborhoods identified with the Resistance Against the Coup that have been declared free of political propaganda, adds to it the obtaining of information about leaders of the resistance ordered by the military and politicians.

The environment of repression and uncertainty, which is re-enforced with the order given the 16th of November, 2009 by the Sub-secretary of Service Networks of the Ministry of Public Health which orders the preparation of a CONTINGENCY PLAN to cover health services 24 hours a day from the 19th of November to the 4th of December, 2009. Along with order No. 1055-09-SSRDS, the Plan should include a halt on anticipated appointments without putting the health of patients at risk, reprogramming of selective surgeries scheduled for those dates and dealing with the shortage of medicines and medical supplies for the plan.

These measures appear to be related to the carrying out of the illegitimate electoral process on November 29th, structured abnormally reflected in the militarization and para-militarization expressed in the incorporation of the military reserves to support the Armed Forces in watching over the electoral sites which already included 16,000 military troops and 14,000 police agents.

Another victory for American style democracy. Those dissidents in that country need to get with the Obama progressive program of Hope and Change quickly because otherwise after the 29th they will no longer be dissidents they will be magically transformed into terrorists fighting against democracy and the rule of law. Harper will be cheering the newly enthroned government on while telling the Americans that their most loyal colony is in full support.

It would be far worse under Sarah Palin. She would have recognized the election results last week.

Mind you, Palin might have worn some knee-high leather boots and really got into the coup-sponsored "election". Barak Obama took a more, low-key liberal sort of approach. Huge difference there. [/end sarcasm]

Agreed, they should be ashamed. As should Obama himself. I read this today: National Lawyers Guild Calls for the US to Disavow the Legitimacy of Elections in Honduras.

National Lawyers Guild wrote:
Yesterday, member Tanya Brannan stood outside the U.S. Embassy in Honduras in protest of the U.S. government's apparent support of the election. The demonstration drew substantial attention from the Honduran national police, including their elite riot squad, the Cobras*, who came out in force. As one bystander observed, "The U.S. government has brought out their helicopters and Honduran riot police to repress a handful of their own citizens trying to exercise their right to free speech. What are they afraid of?"
* The Cobras are especially hated and feared by the Honduran people. Founded by the infamous and now-rehabilitated death squad commander Billy Joya, and trained by the Israeli army, the Cobras are an "elite" police squad implicated in multiple murders and disappearances during the 1980s. Along with Joya's deranged Intelligence Battalion 3-16, the Cobras were one of the organizations that disfigured Honduran society as the country was used as a staging ground for Washington's war on the Nicaraguan Revolution.

Quote:
This time they head to the "Francisco Morazán" central park, seeing as the Micheletti Thug Trolls took over the Resistance Plaza and the areas adjacent to it. In recent days there were four important events for the Marchers, first: An 70% abstention against the elections of Sunday November 29th, second: The development of a fantastic caravan made up of hundreds of vehicles that went throughout the streets of the capital, the third: A spontaneous gathering of hundreds of protesters in front of the Brazillian embassy, where President Mel is, to give him moral support and salutations, and the fourth: A massive assembly of Marchers in the STIBYS union headquarters, which looked like it was going to explode. These four events, the last three of which happened on Monday, have a common characteristic: they demonstrate to us that the Resistance is more alive than ever and fighting with more energy in the streets and everywhere else it is called to fight for the interests of the people whose rights have been violated. They tell us that the struggle is long-term, that they are organized and continue organizing themselves to take power peacefully. They express to us that the crimes committed against a defenseless people should be punished. That the military, soldiers, cops, vultures or whatever you want to call them should go back to their barricades to keep fattening. Energetically they tell us that the oligarchy, the dictatorship and the coup-makers will not continue sinking roots into the people and should pack their bags to leave. They scream to us that the people are united in the Resistance Front, as the only social-political alternative that exists, to take Honduras forward and get it out of the poisonous claws that it finds itself in. They tell us that the people are on their feet and when they start to march, there is no amount of force that can detain them.

The two candidate in the election were chosen last November, 7 months prior to the coup.

Coup or not, the election results would have likely been the same.

If you are a social DEMOCRAT, you have to recognize that Zelaya was essentially a left wing George Bush, trying to evade congress to get his will.  He refused to submit his 2009 budget, then tried to bypass congress to get his term limit removed, trying to act unilaterally even though he was supposed to go through congress.

The Honduras constitution forbids presidents from running twice, because they wanted to prevent the string of dictatorships they suffer throughout most of the twentieth century. Zelaya tried to go around this and got the boot.  The coup was illegal, (the supreme court had ordered him detained and the military took this a different way) but shortly after, the congress legally stripped Zelaya of his successor and nominated someone else from his same party to be the interim government.

As discussed on the Green Party blogs, my understanding is Zelaya was not seeking to extend his term. That appears to be a baseless assertion used to try to justify the coup. There were other candidates in the election as well, including Carlos H. Reyes, who withdrew his candidacy in protest.

Quote:
Mel Zelaya, the elected president of Honduras who was deposed in a military coup on June 28, is not leaving the country, as is being reported in the corporate media.

The first reports that he was to leave the embassy tonight came from the corporate media in Honduras, who have been active supporters of the military coup. Zelaya has been in hiding in the Brazilian embassy since 21 September.

...

Quote:
Yesterday, the South American trade bloc MERCOSUR, made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela, stated that they would not recognize the November 29 elections as legitimate.

Zelaya's continued presence in the embassy has become one of the key symbols of the fraudulant nature of the recent elections.

demagogue

The problem is that some posters seem to think because someone is left wing, they break their countries own laws but if someone is right wing it is evii.

Try holding the same standards to all governments despite ideology.  Zelaya did not have the constitutional authority to get his will, and tried to go beyond Congress by illegally forcing a series of referendums.

Posters here would be all over George Bush or Stephen Harper is they tried to go around congress/parliament to do the same.  Progressives should be aware of wolves in sheep's clothing who think its necessary for them to stay in power forever to make changes.  We may get a benevolent socialist once in awhile, but mainly we get Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and others.

We have seen to many of these personalities throughout history.  They rarely lead to expanded welfare or human rights in the long term.  The best check on progressive policies is to foster leaders who are willing to

The coup was illegal (Zelaya should never have been exiled) and ongoing police presence and human rights violations are unwarranted, but this does not mean the election result would have been any other way and should not be valid.

Or that Zelaya would not have been legally impeached as the supreme court had ordered before the military seemed to get involved.

This is some more issues on how he tried to go around Congress.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124744094880829815.html

Lobo was the front runner by far and there is no allegations of improprieties at the poll. (Lobo even said he supported the fourth ballot box.. although not the June plebsicite which Zelaya called directly without congresses approval.)

The Election.

While the Honduran Nationals won, the Liberal party was the governing party and was the ones in charge of the elections.  The Liberals barely won with Zelaya in 2005 over the National Party, and by all indications voters were fed up with the Liberals.  (Not just Zelaya, but also Michellini who was the intern leader.)

Carlos Reyes was never anything more than an obscure independent candidate who was lucky to polls more than 6% or the votes. The previous few election, the Nationals and Liberals always combined for more than 95% of the votes.  Which is actually surprising, since Honduras uses an open list proportional representation system.

Anyways, everyone seems to thing it is the US versus Zelaya or some case like that.  Rather, Zelaya upset his own party and unified the two main camps against him for his series of antics.

He is no Evo Morales who worked his way up defending indigenous rights. Zelaya was an industrialist tycoon, who thought he could emulate Castro.

I'll admit, I liked his stances legalizing drugs, but even where I like the progressive policies in some of these countries, does not mean I like the way that totalitarianism in South America is becoming the norm.

But here, if you don't like US Media.

Get on google and scan articles PRIOR to the Coup.  IE, rather than accusing the media of revisionism afterwards or quoting socialist articles.

Reporters without Borders was highly critical of Zelaya and his attacks on freedom of the press. And accused Zelaya of ordering murders of journalists way back in his term:

http://www.rsf.org/Head-of-Radio-Cadena-Voces-flees.html

Or this was when he tried to create massive government censorship bureau:

"...To make a long story short, the Honduran coup regime incredibly survived international embargos and diplomatic negotiations that in the end only served to extend its grasp on illegitimate power. The disturbing suspicion that the US government, the historic godfather of the region, had given its blessing to the new regime, became certainty when the State Department issued an agreement that paved the way for coup-sponsored elections without assuring the return of the elected government. In June 2009, a military coup in Honduras deposed the government of Manuel Zelaya, stymieing the government’s progressive social reforms and experiments with participatory democracy. "It was not only to expel President Zelaya,” says Juan Almendarez, a prominent Honduran environmental and humanitarian advocate. The coup happened “because the powerful people in Honduras were acting in response to the people’s struggles in Honduras.”

The result has been social decay and political repression. The homicide rate in Honduras has skyrocketed under the Porfirio Lobo regime, registering as the world’s highest in 2010. Human rights groups highlight the ongoing political assassinations of regime opponents. In this small country of 8 million people, 17 journalists have been killed since the coup. LGBTI organizers, indigenous rights activists, unionists, teachers, youth organizers, women’s advocates, and opposition politicians have also received death threats or been killed. Those responsible are rarely punished by the justice system, which instead devotes its energies to prosecuting social and human rights activists. Protests are often met with teargas canisters and live ammunition.

The coup has also proved a setback for campesino activists seeking to halt the encroachment of large landowners on their farms.

7 Men Sentenced for Murder of Honduran Environmental Activist Berta Cáceres

In Honduras, seven men were sentenced to up to 50 years in prison for the 2016 murder of Indigenous environmental activist Berta Cáceres. Cáceres was fighting the construction of a major hydroelectric dam on Lenca Indigenous land when she was shot dead in her home in March 2016. She was the winner of the prestigious Goldman Prize for environmental defenders in 2015. A court has ruled that Cáceres’s killing was ordered by executives of the Honduran company behind the dam, known as DESA, who hired the convicted hit men to carry out the killing. At least two of the men involved in the murder were trained by U.S. military forces. This is Berta Cáceres’s daughter Bertha Zuñiga Cáceres speaking outside the court in Tegucigalpa.

The ongoing crisis in Honduras began with a military coup d’etat against left-wing president Manuel “Mel” Zelaya in 2009. The coup paved the way for the conservative National Party to assume control of the country, bringing to power several figures affiliated with the drug trade, including President Hernández, usually known by his initials JOH.

JOH’s younger brother “sought to capitalize on political instability resulting from the coup that year, and those he chose to protect became virtually untouchable,” prosecutors wrote in Tuesday’s sentencing memo. “This impunity resulted in Honduras becoming one of the foremost transshipment points for U.S.-bound cocaine and unimaginable horrors for the Honduran people as they were left to reside in a crumbling narco-state.”
