I clicked on the Discuss link at the bottom of this article to see what discussion had taken place and it created this thread even though I didn't post anything. Then I went back to the article and clicked on Discuss again and it appears to have created a second thread.

LOL, stargazer, clogged the arteries to her brain? Maybe it is both the perogies and the indoctrination of the religious cult. ;)

There is open warfare going on in our family at the moment over certain members drinking the kool aid of the evangelical cult and making poor choices, amongst which is the braindead support of Harper. So perhaps I am biased against the perogies being the problem.

Drifting back to HarperGirl: Ruby, I'm sorry, I know you're a great comedienne, but it just makes me wince to see stereotyped Harper fans equated with stereotyped fat dumb blondes. I can't decide whether the fat blondes should be more insulted at being stereotyped as fat blondes in the first place, or at being stereotyped as dumb, or at being equated with Harper fans. It just makes me wince, that's all. Call me a dumb humourless male, but that's how I twitch.

I thought it was funny, but I also have mixed feelings about that sort of fat-phobic humour, even when self-inflicted.

That said, I used to find the "Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker" routine pretty funny too, and that always ended with him working himself up into such a lather that he would fall on some piece of furniture - usually a table - and breaking it.

That's kind of insulting, Sarann. (I say this as a participant, not as a moderator.) People should be able to express their opinions on pop culture phenomena without being insulted for doing so. (Although, it's true, I do wish I were that funny! :D )

That said, I take M. Spector's and Ruby Jones' points, and I thought it was hilarious too. The smearing of the cake kind of hit me the wrong way, but overall, I loved the videos.

I'm sorry. I was just defending her right to be herself. As I read back up I see it was not you who turned the whole topic into a discussion about blondes and weight and other things. If she had been 125 lbs with brown hair would the discussion have turned into one about body image instead of her talents.

I didn't see any fat-phobic humour or any other fat-phobic content in that video. "Stereotyped fat dumb blondes"? Where does that come from? It wasn't in the video.

I think the "stereotyping of fat people" in this video is all in the mind of certain beholders who can't get past the fact that the woman presenting it is plus-sized.

There is no evident trading on the woman's physique for cheap laughs or any other purpose. And as a fat guy myself, I'm certainly not insensitive to that sort of stereotyping. The fact is this video would be just as funny, just as satirical, if HarperGirl were a waif.
