I'm struggling with understanding issues of language and translation, but to describe Dec 6 as a day to commemorate killings is not okay.

Lefauve, the English word "commemoration" traduit comme célébration. The word I think you were looking for is "memorial".

Rebecca and Maysie - "Commemorate" does not mean celebration. What are you doing?? Why not google "commemorate holocaust" (1.3 million hits) or "commemorate armenian genocide" (third of a million) and ask yourself whether the world is celebrating mass slaughter?

Google isn't a credible source for meaning in context. As a feminist, I prefer the recognition of the events of December 6th, 1989 as a "memorial" or use "remembering" as the active descriptor for annual observance of the massacre. Apparently, I'm not the only one who feels this way.
And I think if you come back in the feminist forum again and tell us what language to use to describe an event that has impacted women as much as Dec 6, you will, unceremoniously, have your ass handed to you.
ETA: the dictionary definition of "commemoration" lists "celebration" as one definition.

Since I'm only a woman, perhaps I could be excused from my overly emotional response to this language, and the subsequent language debate, on this day, or any other day, in the goddamn feminist forum.

Anyway, debating on language is not the point of the post!
The fact is after 22 years we still know too little in order to prevent such event to happen again!
Worst we regresse, the lost of long gun registry, the tolerance of anti-women mysogeniac speach done under the cover of religious freedom and we know nothing on how fabrican turn into a killer!
