I'm struggling with understanding issues of language and translation, but to describe Dec 6 as a day to commemorate killings is not okay.
What is the dam problem?
It a sad event that we need to remember so we can avoid to append again!
And stop fearing word, it is a killing. how ever you look at it, it what happen.
Let remember valerie fabrican and who he was : an highly disturb mysogine
Lefauve, the English word "commemoration" traduit comme célébration. The word I think you were looking for is "memorial".
Rebecca and Maysie - "Commemorate" does not mean celebration. What are you doing?? Why not google "commemorate holocaust" (1.3 million hits) or "commemorate armenian genocide" (third of a million) and ask yourself whether the world is celebrating mass slaughter?
Lefauve, dans le cas présent, ton anglais est tout à fait correct!
Google isn't a credible source for meaning in context. As a feminist, I prefer the recognition of the events of December 6th, 1989 as a "memorial" or use "remembering" as the active descriptor for annual observance of the massacre. Apparently, I'm not the only one who feels this way.
And I think if you come back in the feminist forum again and tell us what language to use to describe an event that has impacted women as much as Dec 6, you will, unceremoniously, have your ass handed to you.
ETA: the dictionary definition of "commemoration" lists "celebration" as one definition.
No Maysie, I changed "commemorate" in the title to "memorial" because it offended me, as it did you.
Not so keen on the term "killings" either, but I'm willing to let that go for now.
I'm going to post "Today Polytechnic killing memorial" on my FB page and see what my feminist sisters think of that phraseology. Since I'm only a woman, perhaps I could be excused from my overly emotional response to this language, and the subsequent language debate, on this day, or any other day, in the goddamn feminist forum.
As you were.
Sorry, Rebecca, the changed title is unacceptable to me.
Anyway, debating on language is not the point of the post!
The fact is after 22 years we still know too little in order to prevent such event to happen again!
Worst we regresse, the lost of long gun registry, the tolerance of anti-women mysogeniac speach done under the cover of religious freedom and we know nothing on how fabrican turn into a killer!
Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz. Never Forget
I really don't understand what is the problem with the term "killing".
Perhaps it simply me who is simply too direct?
Care to explain?
This thread has gone off the rails, so I'm closing it. Please continue the discussion, as Maysie suggested, in this thread here.
Lefauvre, under no circumstances, ever, should reply to a woman in the feminism forum with: "What's your damn problem?" This space is a feminist space where women should feel safe to discuss issues from a feminist point of view. Your aggressive, accusatory tone (which continues to demand that women come accountable to you) is completely out of line on any day of the year, but today it's unconscionable. Take the cotton out of your ears, put it in your mouth and listen, listen, listen.
Closing.
