'We Will Live in Dignity' : Palestinian Prisoners Begin Mass Hunger Strike (and vid)

http://www.alhaq.org/advocacy/topics/right-to-life-and-body-integrity/56...

"...The continuing ill-treatment of some 4,600 political prisoners, which includes internment, the denial of family and lawyer visits, prolonged periods of isolation, and the lack of fair trials, has largely been overlooked by a wider international community that has grown more and more desensitised to such violations of international law.

To mark the occasion of Prisoners' Day, Al Haq has produced a video that elaborates on the experiences of Palestinian prisoners and their families.

Today, some 1,200 Palestinian prisoners are beginning a mass hunger strike to protest their ill treatment, poor conditions and Israel's illegal practise of internment. They do so under the banner 'WE SHALL LIVE IN DIGNITY!'

There are already 10 Palestinians on hunger strike, including Bilal Diab and Thaer Halahleh, both of whom have refused food for 38 days to protest their indefinite detention without charge or trial.

Regrettably, their hunger strike has been completely ignored by the international community.

Help give voice to those who are isolated behind bars and calling out for justice through a wide distribution of this material."

Since 1967 there have been 750,000 arrests..

On Palestinian Prisoner Day, the Suffering of Palestinian Prisoners in Israeli Jails Doubles

http://www.imemc.org/article/63321

"PCHR expresses its utmost concern for the continuing deprivation of family visitations of at least 475 Palestinian prisoners from the Gaza Strip, lasting more than five years now and causing deterioration to these prisoners' psychological and health conditions in violation of international human rights law.

At least 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in a number of Israeli jails are expected to start an open ended hunger strike to pressurize the Israeli Prison Service to heed to their demands, including abolishing the policy of solitary confinement; ending the application of the Shalit law; stopping the attacks against prisoners; providing prisoners with adequate health care; and allowing family visitations to Gazan prisoners.

It is worth noting that at least 10 prisoners have been on hunger strike in protest against the policy of administrative detention."

Injured Inmate in Israeli Jail Claims He Was Raped, Denied Treatment

http://gulfnews.com/news/region/palestinian-territories/injured-inmate-i...

"Othman Ebrahim Assad Younus, a Palestinian prisoner serving four life sentences in Jalboue Prison in Israel, says he was raped by two of his jailers while in solitary confinment. Younus has yet to receive any treatment for injuries he sustained after being arrested by Israeli Special Forces. His family said he needs braces for his legs and arms and he needs psychological therapy following his brutal experience.

In 1993, Younus became involved in the armed resistance against Israel after his father was killed when an Israeli colonist ran over him with his car, along with his sister and pregnant niece. The motorist was never charged for the crime. Younus' mother said that her son didn't even get to see his father before he died and he was buried right away. 'This was a turning point in Othman's life,' Sobhiya Hamad told Gulf News..."

Collectively Punishing Palestinian Prisoners and Families - by Stephen Lendman

http://warisacrime.org/content/collectively-punishing-palestinian-prison...

"On April 17, Palestinian Prisoners Day, hundreds of Palestinians begon open ended hunger strikes. Others join them daily. Hundreds may become thousands. At issue are unjust incarcerations, detentions without charge, torture and ill treatment, deplorable prison conditions, punitive isolation, and denial of all basic rights.

Hunger strikes brought recrimination. On April 19, Maan News reported the Palestinian Authority (PA) saying Israel 'tightened procedures'. Prisoners were punished in isolation without electricity. Threats were made. Family visits were prohibited.

PA officials said 1,000 prisoners began open-ended hunger strikes. In response to Israel's crackdown, Amnesty International's Deputy Middle East and North Africa Director, Ann Harrison, said:

'We remain very concerned about reports that detainees have been denied access to independent doctors, and that some have been punished because of their decision to go on hunger strike -- including being placed in isolation, fined, or otherwise ill-treated by Israel Prison Services officers.."

Opinion: Prisoners Have Rights to See Family, Read Books

http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=477831

"Palestinian prisoners have declared a prison-wide hunger strike. It began with 1,200 prisoners demanding basic rights, such as family visits (Those with family in Gaza have not seen relations since 2007), the ability to touch and hug children and family members and to apply for high school and college degrees, as well as have regular books brought in.

It would be great if Jewish religious and secular leaders (diaspora too!) whose history and culture highlights the importance of books and being a light unto nations, would protest the denial of books to Palestinian prisoners.

The big question however for Ismael and all other prisoners, is what will happen once they end their prison terms and what will they think of how the world acted when they were being punished...?"

Update on the Palestinian Prisoners' Hunger Strike

http://www.addameer.org/etemplate.php?id=470

"As during hunger strikes in the past, the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) has escalated its punishment of hunger-striking prisoners in an effort to undermine the campaign. Addameer lawyers have been denied access to all hunger striking prisoners..>

In light of these developments, an upsurge of action at the international level is necessary to bring action to the legitimate demand of Palestinian prisoners. Addameer therefore renews its call to all political parties, institutions, organizations and solidarity grops working in the field of himan rights in the occupied Palestinian territory and abroad to support the prisoners in their campaign of hunger strikes.."

For Israel, Punishing Palestinians Is Not Enough  -  by Amira Hass

http://www.counterpunch.org/2012/05/02/for-israel-punishing-palestinians...

"In faraway, frozen Finland, otherwise known as the infirmary of Ramle Prison - the lives of four detainees who have been on a hunger strike for at least 60 days hang in the balance. Nearly 2000 inmates in the Nafha, Ashkelon, Gilboa and other prisons around Israel have been on hunger strike for two weeks. The very fact of their decision to refuse food and their willingness to risk being punished by the authorities stands as a reminder of their humanity.

The Israeli Prison Service does not have to make much of an effort to conceal this mass action from Israeli eyes. The great majority of Israelis label all incarcerated Palestinians as conscienceless murderers or common terrorists, at the least. They have little interest in acts of personal or collective courage on the part of Palestinian detainees that serve as reminders that they are human beings.."

Despite this dramatic state of affairs there is scant attention in Europe and literally NONE in North America. In contrast, consider the attention that the Western media has devoted to a lone, blind Chinese human rights lawyer..

There is another comparison to be made. Recall the outpouring of concern and sympathy throughout the West for Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier..."

Yes, and I hope you would have posted it too if I hadn't. Shouldn't one expect Thomas Mulcair to raise the issue when he meets with Shame On Peres? Or do these outrageous prison conditions receive impunity and a free pass from the NDP as well as Harper? What do you think?

NDP Opposition Leader Thomas Mulcair will meet with Israeli President Shimon Peres. Given the dire and barbaric conditions of Palestinian imprisonment and the prisoners' dangerous physical starvation as a result of their hunger strike, it is clearly incumbent upon Mulcair to protest these outrageous and unacceptable conditions.
