I'm a white male alumnus of SFU. The women's centre is pro-women, but it isn't anti-male (or at least it wasn't when I was there, years ago). Actually, I have seen the inside of the women's centre. When I needed to give a seminar presentation on a book only the women's centre library possessed, I was allowed in their space in order to obtain it.So much for lack of welcome for the white male.
One of the more rewarding experiences I had in my time at SFU was my work-study position with the campus radio station where I helped to organize indy music nights at the campus pub. The position helped me meet many of my fellow students from many of the on-campus organizations, including Out on campus, the student society, The Peak newspaper, SFPIRG, the Canadianized Asian club and more.
The men's centre plan seems to me like a cynical ploy to undermine and demonize the women's centre and its mission. It simply strikes me as being created in bad faith. Why is it necessary? Because the women have one; is that it? Should we then have a straight alliance space, just because LGBT people have one now? It's really a shame this is being done, because it really only serves to needlessly antagonize and polarize groups on campus. If some people took the time to meet and get to know some of the individuals involved in some of the on-campus associations, rather than feel threatened and set up knee-jerk counter clubs for which there exists no need, they'd meet some truly wonderful fellow students and have a more enriched university experience.

Mr. Toast I really appreciate your perspective and analysis of the creation of the Men's Space. As pointed out, quite a few times (and further justified by the lovely Telmea Story) these spaces are created for marginalized groups that are disenfranchised because everywhere is a white men's safe space.
I don't want to devalue people's emotions, but I don't entirely understand why 30K needs to go towards this centre and the need to justify it with notes on addictions and abuse. Seems a bit tactless and insulting?
Indeed Kaitlin. Apart from the cuts to women's organizations there are other groups needing of such a space. This is waste to create a parody of the needs of others. I am quite disgusted by it.

Good goddess, I'd like if those decrying this could take five minutes away from their self-congratulations at being so utterly awesome champions of [cis-dominated] women's spaces, which frequently degender women and men, depending on birth assignment, (Women and Trans anyone?) being such paragons of healing and awesomeness, and consider that yes, a group of people who enjoy the vast majority of suicides, workplace deaths, unprosecuted rapes and domestic violence, might want to escape lazy sitcom misandry for a second, and also be free of the toxic forced bonding over objectification that seems to happen in places where everyone is gendered male. No, nevermind, they have to be the unidirectional oppressor because surely nothing else in the second-wave analysis has been proven wrong so why should we question whether it's masculocentrism instead of misogyny that drives much of gender privilege?
I also love how everyone decried these men as straight and white, and nobody mentioned cis.
My feminism remains intersectonal. Meanwhile if Canadian cis feminists had put as much energy into fighting for the right to abortion on demand as they do on fighting for the right to estrogen on demand, a pint of gin and a hot bath would still be the popular method of terminating a pregnancy in this country.

Maybe Radfem 2013 will be more inclusive after the DSM-5 is released next year to validate those who have had their feelings denounced as ingenuine.
Not that they need to be validated by society; it's hardly Mission Accomplished today for those other persons whose experiences were criminalized and pushed to be cured 40 years earlier.
