Thanks Maysie.  I thought it also could very well describe the way Capitalism and its ruling structures imposes itself.

"Christmas is now more a pretend show of wealth and fake happiness, which we know deep down know are futile and evaporative things. Enjoy it whilst you can. The world as we know it is failing. Marry Christmas (or Crisismas as cynics call it these days) anyway.."

HEY EVERYBODY, JUST 51 WEEKS LEFT 'TIL CHRISTMAS!

Not so fast you Gregorian calendar-centric people.

There is still Ukrainian Christmas to look forward to,

It goes all the way from January 6 to the 19th!

(this is the deluxe edition, after all)

Where's the hate, then, Smith? That's what this thread is all about.

Go big or go home. Or, oldgoat, close the damn thread already.

Cool

6079_Smith_W

Hey, I just provided you with a few more weeks worth of grist. Do you expect me to grnd it too?

*grin*

Closing for length (and silliness).

I hate this bloody season as much as anyone, but I do have a soft spot in my heart for carols done well. I haven't got any lights or decorations up, I've been busy adding a room to my house - because I can't shovel snow anymore, I've covered by bridge/patio deck instead. The front door used to be a magnet for snow. I've got crippling arthritis which makes working outdoors painful, but I've been doing it for a few weeks on and off now. I just filled in the eaves with plastic sheeting, because we're expecting a big winter storm starting tonight - lots of snow, and high wind. I hate winter, too. Frown

onlinediscount that was absolutely unforgiveable. Glad you're getting into the spirit of the hatred of this time of year.

I'll see your Olivia Newton John and raise you.....

I love the top-rated YouTube comment: "If I were your neighbour, I'd burn your house down."  Haha!

I love these light displays, I'm a total sucker for them.  But now I think they actually sell kits that do it all automatically for you.  The first one a few years ago was amazing, because the homeowner actually coordinated the whole thing his or herself.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I have a big hate-on for those tacky plastic inflatable Christmas displays - god they are so f***ing ugly!

ETA: tried to post earlier, kept getting the 'validation error' message. Then I remembered to log off and on, and I was able to post again. I hate this babble bug as much as I hate those inflatable Christmas display montrosities.

Such as this, Boom Boom?

And, just for the hell of it since it sums up my attitude.

You will be illegal in 7 days. This is your final notice.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Heh. The police don't patrol here. We're an isolated community. It's been two or three years since I've seen any policing done here.

Don't say I didn't warn you (dialing SQ to squeal on friend and claim bounty...).

That would be the difference between cats and dogs, I suppose:

Ok, I really LOL'd at that, Winston.

Megan Leslie obviously does not hate Christmas. Too bad. Frown

They are predicting the fucking snow tonight. Farewell, mobility.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I hate to be a smartass or a smartypants, but folks here cheer the cold weather and snow, for it gives them mobility with their skidoos. We don't have road connections - yet - and hard, packed snow on the trails allows us to travel up and down the coast on snowmobiles, visiting relatives and friends, getting supplies, participating in winter recreational activities such as hockey, winter carnivals, snowshoeing, and the like. Also, winter allows us to go into the bush and cut trees for lumber and firewood. And allows the trappers to get fresh meat. Aside from all that, I hate winter, what with my arthritis and all.

lagatta

I know that, Boom Boom, both from time north of Lac-St-Jean and in Nunavik.

I'm of course whingeing about nothing; just so unhappy not to be able to ride my bicycle, run my errands, meet clients etc quickly and stay in shape. I can easily walk to shopping and take the metro or bus if need be, but I'm sure you are aware that unlike cycling, which relieves arthritis, walking can hurt the joints (though doing nothing at all is of course MORTAL).

Hope you get some nice caribou, low in cholesterol but rich in iron!

Sure Boom Boom. And Santa's reindeer have been doing practice runs off the roof of my house.

I told the youngest that Santa uses kangaroos in Australia and he didn't bat an eyelash.

That Megan Leslie card is the funniest thing I've seen today.  How excellent is that?  She seems to have a great sense of humour. :)

That is very cute, Winston. I'm usually the one at a party that starts up a conversation about the delights of kerning, soon to find myself alone in the room. I've found a soulmate.

George Monbiot sums up my feelings about Christmas more eloquently than I ever could:

"Rare materials, complex electronics, the energy needed for manufacture and transport are extracted and refined and combined into compounds of utter pointlessness... We are screwing the planet to make solar-powered bath thermometers and desktop crazy golfers.

People in eastern Congo are massacred to facilitate smart phone upgrades of ever diminishing marginal utility. Forests are felled to make 'personalised heart-shaped wooden cheese board sets'. Rivers are poisoned to manufacture talking fish. This is pathological consumption: a world-consuming epidemic of collective madness, rendered so normal by advertising and the media that we scarcely notice what has happened to us.

...Bake them a cake, write them a poem, give them a kiss, tell them a joke, but for god’s sake stop trashing the planet to tell someone you care. All it shows is that you don’t."
