The Conservatives misidentified an Atlantic salmon, left, as a Pacific salmon in a recent online ad. They quickly took the photo down and replaced it with the correct fish. (Conservative Party/Twitter)

The best part of this story is the announcement came in Campbell River which is internationally famous for its salmon fishing. The city calls itself the "Salmon Capital of the World." The Tyee Club is one of its historic cultural associations.

When you travel in a bubble even the obvious can escape your attention. This is major cultural gaff that will piss off old Reform Party types. In this end of Vancouver Island the salmon mistake is way more damaging than the Boy Scout stupidity. The number of times I have seen the Atlantic salmon reposted on Facebook is astounding.

I suspect that the Tyee is not a must read for Harper's Ottawa crowd or maybe they just don't have a clue what a Tyee is.

Quote:

Two of the aims of the club were to increase interest in game fishing of the Tyee and to emphasize the principles of sportsmanship. The club accomplished both of these aims. Today, Tyee fishing and the Tyee Club are world renown. People from all over the world come to Campbell River in August to try to catch one of the great Tyees, or earn a place in the Tyee Club hall of fame. Moreover, the club, with its strict rules on how the Tyee is caught, has made catching one an art and a challenge. It is not the number of fish you catch but rather the size and the fight that count. Because it is not easy to catch a Tyee according to club rules, the number of Tyee caught each year is less than the number of salmon caught by other means.

I bet it was one of those evil escaped farmed atlantic salmon, and Harper innocently took the picture not knowing that.

Not only are they responsible for destruction of the west coast wild fish stocks, they are the worst of our neoliberal capitalist nightmare. Harper should be ashamed of himself for associating his party with such a creature.

Why are we even talking about this?

(seriously... keep it coming. I don't know if it will do any good if a million people show up on the day to find they cannot vote. But every fuckup like this helps)

If you didn't talk about it I wouldn't mind at all. I'd try to respond to your post but frankly I can't tell where your sarcasm stops and your veiled personal insults take over. I know your response which will be, "I don't have a clue what you mean."  Oh well others will.

I'm talking about it because it is an important part of the culture of the region I live in. But given you claim to live in Manitoba and think the Riders play in Edmonton I would not expect you to have clue about our culture on the Salish Sea or the real issues around farmed salmon.

If you want to know where the sarcasm stops, look for what I say after the word "seriously".

The Riders? And Edmonton? Now that is fishy!

... that mark our plaice.

[Oh sorry, that was a stretch.]

I think we should retire the Conservative spawn to a kelp bed. My apologies to the Komochi konbu fishery.

You learn something every day. Yes, I knew a Tyee was a salmon, but not the details. What magnificent beasts!

Yes, that will piss off Reform types. Though Bill Vander Zalm was a "transplanted Atlantic Salmon", after all...

Mr. Magoo

As someone who cared for little else but fishing (ok, and comic books) when he was a kid, that's pretty cool info.  No clutch on your reel?  20lb test for a 30lb+ fish?  Lures, not bait?  Add one more thing to my bucket list.

kropotkin, sorry, your link doesn't work.

Thx Lagatta. I corrected the operator error.
