Iceland's Prime Minister has been forced to resign by his own party over the Panama Paper revelations.

Quote:

The prime minister of Iceland resigned on Tuesday after an enormous leak of documents from a secretive Panamanian law firm about offshore shell companies and tax shelters.

The resignation of the prime minister, Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, was the first prominent political fallout from the document leaks, which have shed unflattering light on the private financial activities of many rich and powerful people around the world.

I've already written my reply. Here it is again...

Attention all US sycophants: the reason there are no Americans named so far is that Panama was put under US regulatory regime and therefore you'd have to be a few bricks short of a load (as a crook) to hide your ill gotten gains in such plain view.

Rest assured? OK, maybe some tadpoles. Big fish? Don't hold your breath.

It's exactly as I stated. Tadpoles.

Yes. One suspects that if the released docs showed that Obama was personally financing child-porn studios in the third-world, the pro-Putinists would still be crying "CIA Plot!!" through hot tears if another one showed that Putin once lit up a smoke in a non-smoking area.

I have to say that this is really an instructive example of hybrid information warfare. Or the weaponization of information. Whatever you want to call it. Very impressive. My compliments to the US and their ... um ... cheerleaders.

No really. It's pretty amazing. One's enemies are often the best teachers.

The Iceland Prime Minister who was forced to resign today over the Panama Papers is only one of 72 current or former heads of state with links to the Panama Papers. In the video accompanying this article, British PM David Cameron proclaims he has no ties and that his record with regard to protecting taxpayers from offshore tax havens helping people avoid their taxes is second to no one in British history, despite the fact that the British Virgin Islands are the largest tax haven globally, and the British crown dependencies Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man are notorious tax havens. The video also mentions that 8 members of the Chinese Politburo are linked to Panama Papers tax havens.

Quote:

Former Conservative MPs, peers and David Cameron’s late father are among scores of people and politicians whose financial affairs have been exposed by a massive leak of data about offshore investments. ....

The leak of more than 11 million documents from the Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca, casts an unprecedented light on the way the rich and powerful are able to use tax havens to shield their wealth. ....

Ian Cameron, the prime minister’s father who died in 2010, is reportedly named as a client of the firm. Six members of the House of Lords, three former Conservative MPs and “dozens” of donors to UK political parties who have been shown to have had offshore assets – although none have so far been named.

The leak also reportedly shows links to 72 current or former heads of state, including dictators accused of looting their own countries including Libya’s former leader Muammar Gaddafi and Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad.

The shills for the people who really run the world have been pulling all-nighters, crafting avowals in the casually arrogant language of the ultra-entitled.

Statements are coming from different countries in different tongues, but the message is similar: Come on, folks, move along, back to work, let's go, show's over.

...

Anyway, it was Mossack Fonseca founder Ramon Fonseca who most succinctly spoke for every member of the game-rigging club Monday.

The data leak, he said, was part of "an international campaign against privacy. Privacy is a sacred human right. There are people in the world who do not understand that."

The US Panama Trade Promotion Agreement is something that babblers need to get their heads around. But let's be clear - despite the insightful remarks of Bernie Sanders (more later) - that you really have to be a bit dumb of a crook to park your money there.

As Pepe Escobar noted,

Quote:
Or, as an international tax lawyer told me, “you have to be an idiot to stash money in Panama. You cannot flush a toilet there without the Americans knowing about it.”

So, after this Agreement, which took effect in 2012, the smart money goes where? Guess?

Bloomberg: The World's Favorite New Tax Haven is the United States

Gosh, what a surprise!

Ok, so to fill in a little (I'd rather not edit posts upthread as it is too much work and a little misleading), in regard to the Keiser Report remarks, the following is noteworthy ....

Keiser's co-host notes

- Guardian's tattle tale mindset "they only searched for those breaking US sanctions (Sudan, Iran, iraq, Russia)

- 2010 US Panama Trade Promotion Agreement ... so that all the data going to this firm goes to the US as well ..

- the Cleopatra noted above was Wendy Deng, Rupert Murdoch's ex ...

For his part, Max notes 20-22 trillion in offshore accounts... and, I think most importantly, says that in this leak  there are no sides, it is just 'the war of all against all' (ie, me trying to be rich at your expense and vice versa) ... an interesting spin ...

https://www.rt.com/shows/keiser-report/338447-episode-max-keiser-897/

Incidently, this is quite a different interpretation from that by Bernie Sanders who noted, back in 2011....

Sanders wrote:
"It turns out that Panama is a world leader when it comes to allowing wealthy Americans and large corporations to evade U.S. taxes by stashing their cash in offshore tax havens."

See Telesur ...

http://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Bernie-Sanders-Warned-Congress-Abo...

So, Bernie noted the crookedness long ago. But he misses that the smart money has gone elsewhere. Escobar notes that only dumb crooks keep their money there. But where do the smart crooks keep their money? Why the USA, of course, says Bloomberg last January. And Max outlines an interesting perspective in which the leaks benefit no one [and everyone] because we are all in war of each against all when it comes to personal wealth (the most important thing in this rotten bourgeois global society) ...

Confused yet? heh.

Peter Lavelle wrote:

Facts will win the day, not drive-by insults that prove nothing.

Again, babblers need to get up to speed on the US Panama Trade Promotion Agreement. Who funded this "leak"? What leaders are targetted? What leaders or financial institutions are conspicuously missing and from which countries? What Head of State was clearly identified by the MSM in virtually all of the Western countries despite not a single page in the millions of pages naming him? Why did it take over a year for all this brew to become public? Who are the gate-keepers of the information?

David Cameron was left dangerously exposed on Tuesday after repeatedly failing to provide a clear and full account about links to an offshore fund set up by his late father, as the storm over the Panama Papers gathered strength in both the UK and elsewhere around the world.

The prime minister and his office have now offered three partial answers about the fund set up by his father Ian, which avoided ever paying tax in Britain. The key unanswered question is whether the prime minister’s family stands to gain in the future from his father’s company, Blairmore, an investment fund run from the Bahamas.

Jeremy Corbin has called for the british government taking over direct rule of its tax havens in Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man and the British Virgin Islands, as well as demanding a full accounting from Cameron about his father's dealing in tax havens.

Quote:

Jeremy Corbyn has called for an investigation in the tax affairs of the Cameron family and urged him to impose “direct rule” over British overseas territories and Crown Dependencies that act as tax havens

Mr Corbyn said that revelations about Mr Cameron’s father’s tax arrangements should be part of a wider UK investigation into the Panama Papers.

He said he had “no problem” with publishing his tax return and indicated that Mr Cameron should do the same.

“I think we need to know where somebody’s income comes from,” he said. “The public need to have confidence that their representatives and ministers are getting their income from honest and open sources as members of Parliament.”

to ensure they comply with UK tax law, Jeremy Corbyn has said.

The Labour leader also said that the governments of overseas territories needed to “understand the anger” in Britain about the hidden wealth exposed by the leak of millions of documents from the Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca.

A bit of a grab-bag of critiques follow. caveat emptor.

1. NBC News. Why are Americans not included in the Panama Papers?

See http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/panama-papers/why-are-americans-not-inc...

Quote:
"This firm is one of thousands in the world and there are hundreds or thousands just like it in the U.S.," said Ana Owens, a tax and budget advocate at U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), a federation of state-level consumer advocacy organizations. "If a company in the U.S. can do the exact thing for you as this company in Panama, then you might as well do it right here in the U.S. And its perfectly legal, which is the issue."

Which is what the Bloomberg story from last January pointed out. Yawn.

2. Fabricated Putin link

See http://www.globalresearch.ca/secret-offshore-money-fabricated-putin-link...

Quote:
London’s Guardian went further, yellow journalism at its worst, spuriously alleging “(a) network of secret offshore deals and vast loans worth $2bn has laid a trail to Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin.”

“An unprecedented leak of documents shows how this money has made members of Putin’s close circle fabulously wealthy.”

“Though the president’s name does not appear in any of the records, the data reveals a pattern – his friends have earned millions from deals that seemingly could not have been secured without his patronage.”

“The documents suggest Putin’s family has benefited from this money – his friends’ fortunes appear his to spend.”

No evidence corroborates the Guardian’s specious allegations, the latest example of irresponsible Western media Putin bashing.

The Guardian featured in bold letters: “How to hide a billion dollars” accompanied by Putin’s image, the implication clear, evidence linking him to possible wrongdoing absent because none exists.

His spokesman Dmitry Peskov said “it’s obvious that the main target of (ICIJ’s report) is our president,” aimed at discrediting him and affecting Russia’s stability.

He suggested ICIJ ties to Washington. Its dubious funding sources reveal its intention to smear Vladimir Putin irresponsibly – destroying its own credibility in the process.

3. Wikileaks at war with ICIJ. Will Snowden and Assange chime in?

Wikileaks has a problem with the Soros/corporate funded Panama Papers "leaks". And it's only been a day or so. Ho Hum. Wikileaks also tweeted ...

Quote:
Moments later, in a subsequent tweet it added that the "Putin attack was produced by OCCRP which targets Russia & former USSR and was funded by USAID & Soros.

Wikileaks wants this stuff to be released in full. Because freedom. And I think they mean it.

4.Global research.

Quote:
.. the Panama Papers appear to be nothing more than other propaganda assault conducted by the U.S. State Department and its host of interconnected color revolution agencies like the Ford Foundation, OSI, and USAID. Before activists rejoice, they should take a deeper look into the leaks and the source that produced them.

http://www.globalresearch.ca/are-panama-papers-an-act-of-destabilization...

http://russia-insider.com/en/politics/shots-fired-wikileaks-accuses-pana...

That didn't take long.

It's been pointed out that the Ukrainian President is no small fish. I have to agree. But I still think the lack of US big fish, the obvious campaign against the Russian President, your grab bag of unlikeable politicians from XYZ, the question of who was funding the "leak" ... and the advice above is very good ...

"Before activists rejoice, they should take a deeper look into the leaks and the source that produced them."

I have to agree. But I must admit that the fish are getting bigger.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

Devogenes wrote:
Also, if this is a Washington psyop, why target the PM of Ukraine, whom they only recently put into power

This is what the Global Research piece argues:

Quote:
While there are many more individuals and countries listed in the leaks, the lists themselves are a curious representation of countries and world leaders whom the United States and the NATO powers view as targets and/or enemies. Putin, Assad, Mubarak, and Orban as well as their host countries of Hungary, Venezuela, Russia, Syria, Palestine, and China are all listed as violators of tax evasion, money laundering, and more but without sufficient evidence to prove most of the claims made against them.

The second point that must be made is the curious lack of high-profile American names as well as the lack of NATO leaders, leaders of major European countries, and Israelis. Being the most massive leak in journalistic history, to be sure, citizens of one of the largest economies on the face of the earth would turn up in an investigation of offshore accounts....

For these reasons, the Panama Papers release has all the hallmarks of what might be considered a “limited hangout” operation. In other words, these leaks may very well be nothing more than an Anglo-American attack on geopolitical rivals and an exercise in a massive propaganda blitz against target nations and individuals.

Lastly, while some revelations do contain NATO allies like the Ukrainian President, the Saudis, United Arab Emirates, and Qataris, one must keep in mind the necessity of the “hangout” aspect of the “limited hangout,” i.e., the necessity to reveal something negative about the institution or nations actually releasing the “leaks” in order to provide authenticity of the documents and claims made therein but, at the same time, never revealing anything that would actually be practically damaging to the entity that originally provided the leak. A limited hangout is thus a type of data leak false flag, requiring a certain amount of incriminating data aimed back at the perpetrator so as to provide credibility but never enough to bring the heat back to the one who created and committed the leak to begin with.

The gate-keeper aspect is, IMHO, a bit of a giveaway. Let the public decide. A controlled release by self censoring gatekeepers isn't convincing. I would just re-iterate that if this is a psy-ops or hybrid warfare, then it's pretty impressive. You have to give some sneaking admiration to the audacity and breadth of the action. But it's rather too obvious for the other side to notice that, despite some sacrificial lambs, there is too much of the orchestrated campaign (esp the Putin stuff which was rather a dead giveaway) and a lack of important figures in the Anglo-Zionist (The Saker's phrase - look it up) world.

Well, if they are, they're not doing a very good job, if part of the gatekeepers' agenda, as implied by you, is to keep Israeli names off the list.

Anyway, since you are now unable to continue with your claim that there are no Israelis on the list, you've shifted to implying that there is something sinister about the way in which Israeli names are being publicized. I believe the term for this tactic is "shifting the goal posts".

The Panama Papers will most likely put the Pirate Party in office in Iceland.   They're at 43% in the polls.    Birgitta Jonsdottir, a former leading figure in Wikileaks would be the most likely Prime Minister.   I don't think the U.S. would be thrilled with that.

Similarly I don't think U.S. interests would be thrilled with David Cameron being taken down and Jeremy Corbyn moving into "Number 10".

Last night Bernie Sanders made note of the fact that he opposed the US/Panama free trade agreement.

There's nothing particularly progressive about the kleptocratic capitalist regimes that currently run Russia and China.    The only thing that's somewhat useful about them is that they provide some small degree of a counterweight to the Wall Street regime on some international issues.

The other thing to remember is that this set of leaks comes from the fourth largest "off shoring" law firm in Panama.    I'm sure that if some day the world were able to obtain documents from numbers one, two and three we'd learn even more dirt about the world's capitalists.

In the meantime enjoy the ride.

You're right to point out that the progressive characteristics of these regimes should not be exaggerated. But let's also be perfectly clear that the US hegemon openly aims for endless world domination; that to achieve that end, it will stop at nothing, including preparations for World War III; that in the last 6 months the Russian AF was the key military force, other than the Syrian Arab Army, to stop the barbarous US and NATO plans to transform Syria into another failed state and launching pad for Wahhabist Sunni fundamentalists; that the US helped a fascist-infested regime take power in Ukraine, and that were it not for quick action, Crimea would now be a US military base aimed directly at Russia; etc. etc. etc. Give credit where credit is due.

We all know that Putin, for example, even carries out some of the austerity policies (eg, cuts to Science funding) that conservatives and neo liberal Canadian regimes carry out, while nevertheless playing a positive role in international relations.

The whole angle of the US being a more popular destination for setting up shell companies, etc., dovetails with helping US business interests at a time when a looming financial crisis may put global financial assets in jeopardy. Those US assets, goes the argument, ought to be in the US - safer from the watchful eyes of international institutions or financial tsunamis generally than otherwise.

We have already seen how US dominated financial institutions like the IMF have effectively partitioned the global community of states into those that do the bidding of the US regime and those that do not. So, for example, it used to be that any state that defaulted on state to state loans would no longer be eligible for IMF loans. But now, since states other than the US can bankroll such loans, we see that if Ukraine defaults on a loan to Russia ... then the IMF says, "No problem. We will still lend you money. Fuck the Russians." etc. This effectively is an act of financial piracy or brigandage.

The colossus is truly contemptible. But the ends justify the means. The Empire must dominate forever. All those who oppose the Emperor must die. So it's all good. See?
