Here's why they did it:

Quote:

On Tuesday, officials released a statement saying that the government of Ecuador “respects the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of other states” and had cut off the internet access available to Assange because “in recent weeks, WikiLeaks has published a wealth of documents, impacting on the US election campaign”.

The statement also reaffirmed the asylum granted to Assange and reiterated its intention “to safeguard his life and physical integrity until he reaches a safe place”.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/oct/19/wikileaks-ecuador-julian-a...

They also said in the letter that the action does not prevent Wikileaks from carrying out its journalistic (sic) activities.

Wikileaks and/or Assange are now discredited in the eyes of a lot of former supporters. Too bad!

6079_Smith_W

Yup, it is too bad. Guess whose fault it is:

http://www.kitguru.net/channel/jon-martindale/anonymous-distances-itself...

That was four years ago.

Frankly given the stunt he was pulling and the quality (and veracity) of what he was releasing, I think the Ecuadorians did him a favour with this intervention.

Ecuador is a fascinating new player in international politics. It deserves more attention. It's part of the Bolivarian Alternative of the Americas (ALBA) and has played a similar foreign policy role to Venezuela under Chavez and Bolivia under Morales, but more quietly. In sheltering Assange it struck a solid blow for freedom of information. In cutting him off, it reflects the growing consensus on the left that Assange has become a clumsy partisan campaigner, and drifted from the original freedom of information mission that Wikileaks pursued so bravely in its early days. I don't know what the future holds in Venezuela, but countries like Ecuador, less flamboyantly, may be the ones to carry on the ALBA mission of presenting an alternative to colonialist policies peddled by governments in the North.

Not surprising that the Americans gave a bit of a nudge though:

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/u-s-urged-ecuador-act-against-assang...

Of course Ecuador is doing the right thing by continuing to offer asylum. But the actions that made them come to this decision is kind of reminiscent of this oldie but goodie:

Silencing Assage: 'US Establishment in Panic Over Clinton WikiLeaks Emails'

https://www.rt.com/op-edge/363332-wikileaks-interest-assange-ecuador-cli...

"The US establishment is panicking over the release of Clinton's emails. 'It is an effort to expose a record behind Hillary Clinton, which is a way of informing the world exactly who this politician is..."

swallow swallow's picture

Despite the apocolyptic rhetoric, seem to me that the US establishment is giggling over it, feels entirely unthreatened, and has smothered the more damaging relevations by focussing on the trivia.

6079_Smith_W

If there were any damaging revelations to be found they would be all over the media. They have worked as hard as they could to make the email scandal look like treason. The worst that seems to be in this latest batch is reporters playing sycophant, and Clinton explaining how politicians talk to people.

For all the bluster, for all the misrepresentation of information (like the "open borders" comment last night) and even given the one proven forgery that was uncovered, this campaign is a dud.

6079_Smith_W

Of course there is also this astonishingly sensible response (that gets to the problem everyone seems to be ignoring) from someone who was smeared in one of those leaked emails:

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/10/larry-lessig-has-a-very-goo...

Quote:

I’m a big believer in leaks for the public interest. That’s why I support Snowden, and why I believe the President should pardon him. But I can’t for the life of me see the public good in a leak like this — at least one that reveals no crime or violation of any important public policy.

We all deserve privacy. The burdens of public service are insane enough without the perpetual threat that every thought shared with a friend becomes Twitter fodder.

Mr. Magoo

He makes a good point.

"Someone talked smack about someone else" isn't really "whistleblowing" in any real sense.

TiSA Agreement Leaks Show Corporations Pushing Privatization of Public Services

quote:

WikiLeaks has released 3 chapters of the highly secretive Trade in Services Agreement that is currently being negotiated among 50 different countries. But as usual, the big players are the EU and the US, that are dominating the talks. This is not a light deal, the Trade and Services Agreement is also known as TiSA. It represents two thirds of the world’s GDP and is supposed to deregulate all kinds of services, including telecommunications, shipping, air sea transport, energy mining, and financial services. There are too many to mention all of them here. But the WikiLeaks files released last week also show that the European Union is pushing negotiators to complete the agreement before the next US president takes office in January. Opponents of this agreement have long argued that TiSA would significantly undermine democracy and economic development for less developed countries.

Julian Assange says “1,700 emails in Hillary Clinton’s collection” proves she sold weapons to ISIS in Syria Then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton knew that the US was sending arms from Libya to Syria in 2011, a year before the Benghazi attacks.

Hilary Clinton should be in the dock for Crimes Against Humanity, as the list of atrocities is getting longer and longer. What is also clear now is that Clinton, knowingly, provided arms to Qatar and Saudi Arabia [while Sec of State] while the latter were providing funding, training, and arms to the barbarous jihadi terrorists in Syria. For that alone she should be in jail.

God only knows what disgusting atrocities she would order should she become POTUS.

Look NDPP, I can appreciate that the US and Sweden are exploiting this, and basically obstructing justice, but perhaps Assange should have thought twice and kept it in his pants rather than deciding to jump on a sleeping woman and start having sex with her. It is sexual assault.

And maybe he should think twice about exploiting his organization which is potentially everything Moore says, but is currently being used as a cheap get out of jail free card.

thanks for this, an vitally important document eventually to be presented to a Federal Court to sue the CBC in Canada for complicity!!

Mr. Magoo

Quote:

So you feel it should go through civil court?  Because that's where you "sue" somebody.

What kind of damages are you expecting the Court to order?  And payable to whom?

iyraste1313

Yes it would be through the federal Court, based on provivions of the Charter, Canada´s anti terrorism act, and international law on crimes against the peace........it would be a judicial review both of the actions of the CBC and the failure of the CRTC to maintain standards based on Canadian values, its mandate.

Damages? Perhaps to the families of the millions who have died for the gross deceptions of the CBC as per the John Pilger article, perhaps jail sentences of those in the CBC held responsible!

Mr. Magoo

Quote:

Would there be any onus on the plaintiffs in the Federal Court to show that millions have died directly because of the actions (or inactions) of the CBC?

And given that we all fund them, are we not all complicit?

Are those of us who haven't chosen to speak out anonymously on the internet complicit?

And I bet Russia could provide him with some sweet, sweet hacks, in exchange for a little "consideration".

Assange: Clinton and ISIS Funded By Same Money, Trump Won't Be Allowed To Win [John Pilger EXCLUSIVE] (and vid)

"In a 2014 email made public by Assange's WikiLeaks last month, Hillary Clinton, who had served as secretary of state until the year before, urges John Podesta, then an advisor to Barack Obama, to 'bring pressure' on Qatar and Saudi Arabia, 'which are providing clandestine financial and logistic support to ISIL and other Sunni groups."

iyraste1313

Would there be any onus on the plaintiffs in the Federal Court to show that millions have died directly because of the actions (or inactions) of the CBC?

from wsws.org........

The Nuremberg precedent

The role of propaganda and propagandists figured prominently at the Nuremberg war crimes tribunal, convened to render judgment on the Nazi leaders following World War II. The tribunal was an institution organized by the victorious Allied governments, serving in the final analysis the ruling classes of those countries.

Nonetheless, in their arguments US prosecutors set forth a democratic legal principle derived from the international experience of a half-century of carnage: that planning and launching an aggressive war constituted a criminal act and that those who helped prepare such a war through their propaganda efforts were as culpable as those who drew up the battle plans or manufactured the munitions....

...the attempts to ridicule such precedents, perhaps yes suggest complicity....

Mr. Magoo

Quote:

Yes, surely.

Though not necessarily "millions".  Thousands, hundreds, dozens, or even just one should be sufficient.

But don't focus on the number.  Focus on the whole "directly" part.  That's what's going to be the lynchpin.

New Republic: The Most Important WikiLeaks Revelation Isn't About Hillary Clinton

https://twitter.com/wikileaks/status/793226710057619458

"What John Podesta's emails from 2008 reveal about the way power works in the Democratic Party."

No surprise either, that Obama consigliere and the man Canadian International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland calls her "guru", the man who helped break Glass Steagall and a prime advocate of 'bail ins' and financial deregulation, former World Bank head who infamously wrote: 'I think the economic logic behind dumping a load of toxic waste in the lowest wage countries is impeccable and we should face up to that..', Larry Summers figures prominently in this NR article.

iyraste1313

The real scandal of the 650,000 Hillary Clinton and Huma Abedin emails hidden on the laptop or laptops at the home of Anthony Wiener, estranged husband of Huma Abedin, is not that Hillary might have lied under oath about turning over all her emails. The real scandal is that the most damaging secrets of America’s invisible government, its parallel “deep state” acting uncontrolled since at least the time of Vice president and former CIA chief, George H.W. Bush, in the 1980’s, could come to light. If that happens, “All the King’s Horses and All the King’s Men” will face charges of treason or worse. That just might be an appropriate time to begin a clean out of the Augean Stables today known as political Washington.
