In the next election NDpers will be voting Liberal ro keep out the Cons.

They probably would have if the Liberals had not promised electoral reform precisely so they would not be blackmailed like this again. Having broken that promise, I think a good many New Democrats who might in the past have voted strategically will remember this when the Liberals do their slimey appeal. They might enjoy Trudeau having a litle karma for that proken promise.

I admit that I have never voted strategically for another party but I have considered it. I would never consider it again after this move of the Liberals. I am not alone.

Also, given the broken promise to Indigenous Canadians I can imagine that many who might have considered the Liberals now won't.

Environmentalists will remember broken promises.

Youth, who were promised electoral reform might not only not vote Liberals they may decide not to vote at all since Trudeau made such a mockery of his promises.

My prediction is that Trudeau will manage to reverse the improvement in sufferage and see a lower turnout at the polls than 2011.

I can't say who will win yet and nobody really can as it depends on too many unknowns including new leaders but the Liberals have sown their defeat -- it is now only a question of whether they, and the opposition will water it and let it come to fruition.

It is a common thing that when a government crosses the line with the voters they may not know until much later as they are still drunk on the optimism they encouraged before proving they were not going to deliver.

Canadians have to prepare for a Conservative government and will need to get ready to spank Liberal arrogance again. Hope it does not take too long and that the Conservatives do not rule long.

Canada's Corporate Elite Breathes a Sigh of Relief Following PM Trudeau's Official Visit to Washington  -  Intro by Roger Annis

https://newcoldwar.org/canadas-corporate-elite-breathes-sigh-relief-foll...

Canada is dispatching 200 soldiers to Ukraine in the latest rotation of troops who are training the Ukrainian military and paramilitary extremists to wage civil war in the east of that country. The training is conducted jointly with the US and British militaries.

Canada has simultaneously taken on the role of leading one of the four permanent 'combat' brigades that NATO is establishing at or near Russia's borders with eastern Europe. It is stepping up its military intervention in northern Iraq, conducted jointly with the US. Canada's government and military are also consulting with the US as to where, exactly, they could station a desired expeditionary brigade of 600 soldiers to Africa.

Against that backdrop, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made his first official visit to Washington on February 13. The self-proclaimed 'feminist' prime minister left behind in Canada whatever opinion he might have about Donald Trump's views and policies on global warming, the rights of immigrants and refugees, women's rights and other matters.

Trudeau's sole concern was to maintain and possibly enhance the lucrative trade between the US and Canada in all manner of manufactured products and natural resource commodities. The Canada-US trading relationship is the second largest in the world, topped only by US-China trade.

By that measure, Trudeau's visit was an unqualified success. His message on behalf of corporate Canada of unceasing fealty to the US empire, whoever may be leading it, was understood and well received. A Globe and Mail columnist called Trudeau's performance 'appeasement.'..."

If the Consevatives go the way of the GOP then Trudeau is probably safe. If however the party backs away from the racist nativism of Leitch and stresses the eco mic record of Liberals both nationally and in Ontario then we are headed to a hung election.

Trudeau has the support of economists worldwide. He is also going to use CETA. 2018 and 2019 will see the roll out of all kinds of goodies to all constituencies.

In current polls O'Leary does well against Trudeau, although Trudeau keeps the lead. Come election time Trudeau will fight back and make O'Leary look like the bombastic cartoon that he is.

Aren't there enough real reasons to criticize Trudeau to make gossip irrelevant?

Trudeau invited Trump. Trump declined. Ivanka attended in his stead. No mention in the article of Trudeau buying 500 seats but what if he did? It's a Canadian production reminding Americans that we were generous on 9/11.

As to NAFTA, how would it benefit Canada for Trudeau to get aggressive at this point? Holding Trump to his word, that the tweaks will be minor, is a better negotiating tactic.

Meanwhile there is not a murmur about Trudeau's plan for massive expansion of P3s in Canada despite reports that we lose out on such deals. This will impact Canadians for generations to come.

My reading of the link NDPP posted is that the writer said Trudeau`s position, that

"We know we can get our resources to market more safely and responsibly while meeting our climate change goals"

is as bad as Trump's denial of anthropogenic climate change.

Yes!   This has been a liberal project for over a decade now.    It seems in the public sphere the main opposition to these P3 ripoffs is from unions.   OPSEU has run some good anti-P3 campaigns in the past couple of years in Ontario.

This article is interesting because it is in some respects it is unwittingly part of the problem it is commenting on.

It sets up Trudeau as the face of Fascism. Brilliant clickbait. Who would not want to read it either to find reason to demonize or give vent to fury? The article comments on the post fact era and yet it serves itself up as an example. The comment does not try to defend with logic any reasonable connection of Fascism and Trudeau. Instead the writer merely says he  thought of Trudeau. He picked as well a part of what he calls the earmarks of Fascism, but the comment he associates with Trudeau is really not the defining element of Fascism. The point was the connection was scandelous so why hold back?

"It's the fascists who said everyday life doesn't matter; details don't matter; facts don't matter; all that matters is the message, the leader, the myth, the totality."

The comment is, on reflection, neither defining of what Trudeau is about nor Fascism. It is, in the new tradition of post fact manipulation of public comment designed to create the most extreme smear and association possible. Trudeau has not said these things, even if this may be the message delivered by some of his supporters.

The article goes on to use Trudeau's double speak on the environment and resources as an example. For a hyper-partisan person this might be good times but if you pause for a moment and think about what is really being said, it is easy to see how silly this is, and how very much part of the post fact world we are part of that you could make such a comparison.

Trudeau is as fine an example of Liberal bullshit peddler as we have ever had. But that does not make him a Fascist. Many of us saw this before he was elected. Long on promises, little on real conviction, replete with half-truths and lies all delivered with a straight earnest face. This is more traditional bullshit than some Fascist, otherwise we would have to call out every Liberal leader in the last 100 years, including our wartime WLMK. The present pro environment, pro pipeline contradiction is really a modern version of WLMK's conscription but not necessarily conscription debate -- each designed for the part of the country that would like to hear it.  And if Trudeau is guilty on this score he could share a cell with Notley, nevermind the previous Liberal and Conservative PMs. These politicians hold/held positions that are important and contradictory and they choose to present them as if they are not a contradiction.

The problem here with gross exaggerations like this is that they will be accepted by one camp and rejected by the other without any meaningful anlysis. They are so ridiculous that they serve to let Trudeau off as innocent once rather than hold him accountable for what he is much less innocent of. It is a little like accusing a person who is guilty of a break-in of murder: they will be found innocent of the charge you make and you distract from what they are actually guilty of.

Hypocrisy on pipelines is a fairly predictable. Economic development, environmental protection, employment, raise very difficult questions because on many questions you have to side with one or another. Politicians traditionally do not want to be seen as being on one side or another of these. It is worth noting that a politician who is straight on these questions might be unelectable nationally but we do not know as nobody has tried.

Trudeau in particular made a lot of pronouncements from third party status apparently without imagining that he would have to make them come true. His contradictions are also the contradictions of his own supporters who in many cases heard what they wanted to hear and ignored the rest. They reflect the disagreements within his coalition. This does not make him a Fascist, although it might make him comparable to Trump on some points.

We need more sober analysis rather than calling those we oppose the most despicable things we can imagine. We cannot merely blame the leaders for getting away with what we let them get away with. We have to raise the standard of opposition to a level of credibility we seem to have forgotten. Then we will find that our opposition will stick and be more potent than wild and ridiculous comparisons. But sure, if clickbait is what you are after, it works. Yes I clicked.

Fair enough. However, many people who think of themselves as progressive have voted for Trudeau and what we are experiencing is a culture of sounding progressive among policies that just don't measure up in substance. This is not a new story from the Liberals either. I think that it is important that we have solid criticism and specific options rather than rhetoric that is so outlandish that it negates the seriousness of the difference between what the Liberals sold and what they are actually delivering.

For the most part people in places like this do focus on the details but I wonder how many among the public are satisfied in knowing that we get nicer rhetoric from a guy who is only a few shades from Stephen Harper on many details.

I did click on the article, not becuase I think Trudeau is a fascist, but becuase I am concerned about the quality of the opposition to him from many sources. I think the quality of the opposition to Trudeau is as important as the volume given what we are seeing.

As one who wanted a clear direction from the NDP, there are some encouraging signs that we may have this. In part this is supported by what we are seeing in response to the words of Sanders and Corbyn. It is also true that the NDP's voice is mising until the campaign is over as always it is with leadership races.

Not while his hosts were wearing western garb. The entire family is dressing that way for all events as if it is everyday wear. It's like if you dressed up like a folk-dancing lumberjack in Quebec all the time and you had 6 different lumberjack outfits. It's insulting as though you didn't even bother to find out they dress in western clothing too because you assumed they were disconnected from the modern world. If their leader arrived in Canada in July wearing a parka with snow shoes on his back we would think him pretty stupid. Tensions are high right now because they feel we have taken the side of Sikh separatists. We should be trying not to offend. At best they look pretentious or like they are trying too hard to curry favor.

Laughing but Harper didn't dress like that at every event he attended in Alberta along with the entire family in matching western gear.

Described as “too Indian, even for an Indian,” the Trudeaus have commissioned some of India’s most prestigious designers to outfit them for every photo op. What was perhaps most glaring was the juxtaposition between the Canadian political family and the Bollywood stars they met on Feb. 20. Sophie was in a cream-coloured and beaded sari, their children Xavier and Ella-Grace wore a sherwani and lehenga, respectively, and the PM donned a gold sherwani complete with traditional mojari shoes — while the Indian stars wore slacks and jackets.

I don't think our PM gets a clothing allowance especially for his family. He's certainly well off but to pay multiple presdigious designers to create outfits for your entire family has got to cost a pretty penny and they will all wear them primarily just for this trip.

voice of the damned

I've been reading some of the Times Of India coverage of the Atwal controversy, and while the paper itself seems fairly restrained in their approach(even saying now that Trudeau "saved the day" by praising "one, united India"), the comments section is not so even-handed...

Canada has a habit of supporting Khalistan elements. When PM Indra Gandhi was gunned down, there were jubilant celebrations.
When Air India flight was downed, there were more celebrations.
Sikh MPPs in Ontario declared genocide for the very unfortunate killing of Sikhs in 1984
No genocide was raised against the British. Why?
NDP leader is a sikh who openly speaks against India.
They dare not speak against China.
Are we so timid as to support Canada?
We should put a customs tariff against all Canadian exports to India.
It is strange that we are friends with a country which calls terrorism as free speech.

And so on and so forth.

This guy and like-minded "thinkers" might be interested in knowing that when a few Sikhs were filmed dancing in the streets after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, it was met with widespread outrage(some of it tinged by racism, of the kind that doesn't really distinguish between Sikhs and anyone else from the subcontinent), among Canadians. And that yours truly was mocked(well, mildly) by his classmates the next day when he tried to explain that the cheering Sikhs only represented a small minority.
