Should Sanders Continue the Fight Outside the Democratic Party?

Draft Bernie founder Nick Brana discusses the relation of the Sanders movement to the Green Party and says the only way to inspire a similar kind of movement is by going outside of the Democratic Party

NorthReport

Bernie is the draw because of his track record not some backroom hack.

Something is better than nothing. Realistically going outside the Democrats will ensure the GOP retains control. Much, much better to do what Bernie has done, and continues to do.

You never get everything, and yes it can be discouraging, but politics is the art of compromise. Look at Ryan & Trump today. The GOP controls all the levers of government and they still can't get their healthcare legislation passed. They probably will tomorrow but it has not been easy for them to say the least.

Bernie did incredibly well considering he was one, an outsider, and two, the deck was stacked against him

But Bernie did as well as he did and got the publicity that he did because he was running for the Democratic nomination.

And politics is always about power. Power to bring in the legislation you believe in. But of course you never get all the power you want and that's where the compromise aspect comes into play. So you do the best you can under the circumstances in which you find yourself.

..power controls the majority of politicians which you don't deal with. you just move along as if this is all about compromise when the fix is in.

Bernie lost all major battles for power in the DNC, at this point he is outside the system.  Anything he says is falling on deaf ears at the DNC.  I hope bernie does waste his next 3 years trying  to change the Democratic party by talking tough.  I personally doubt Bernies comments will help his relationship with DNC.  I am sure bernie  has lot more info then rabble posters but I question that DNC will change just because says they should.  I wonder when he will recognize that the DNC dislikes him more than they dislike Trump.

Mr. Magoo

"You can't win, Hillary. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."

If, somehow, Sanders had won it all then he'd be the guy trying to backpedal, and explain to people why sometimes you have to make hard choices, and nothing's ever just black and white.

But instead, he gets to be the political version of someone who died young, and we get to imagine any fantasy we want about "what could have been".

Could he have defeated 100 Trumps, armed with nunchuks, using only his little finger?  OF COURSE.

Could he have fed the whole world with a few fishes and loaves?  OF COURSE.

Would I be typing this post while flying above the Earth in my cold-fusion jetpack if Sanders had won?  OF COURSE.

We can make any claim we want about him now.  He'll never have to prove us right.  And ergo, nobody can ever prove that he couldn't.

So, an outbreak of peace and harmony in Syria?  FOR SURE.  But it's too late now, and the U.S. has made their bed and they have to lie in it.

lagatta4

Well, one thing Sanders won't do is die young.

Personally, I think he could have contributed to making a huge difference in terms of founding something akin to the public health systems in other developed countries, which would have been huge.

But a late prof of mine, who really appreciated Jimmy Carter including his efforts once out of office, said that signing up for the US presidency is like joining the Mafia (prof was Sicilian); you have to take part in violent criminal actions on the international level. Because the Prez really isn't in charge there; powerful "military-industrial complex" interests are.

Clinton needs to move on.

Clinton, he added, had a combination of people involved from her time as first lady, secretary of state, senator and a 2008 Democratic presidential candidate, in addition to newcomers for 2016.

“They always have trouble kind of making those various entities kind of work and run smoothly. And I think that was a huge problem for her,” Allen said. “We detail the fact that John Podesta and Robby Mook were infighting. There was lots of infighting and, you know, one of them thought the other was passive-aggressive. The other one didn’t trust the other. And so, there’s lots of this kind of stuff. That never really seeped out.”

That is, until “Shattered” hit the shelves. “[T]he portrait of the Clinton campaign that emerges from these pages is that of a Titanic-like disaster: an epic fail made up of a series of perverse and often avoidable missteps by an out-of-touch candidate and her strife-ridden staff that turned ‘a winnable race’ into ‘another iceberg-seeking campaign ship,’” Michiko Kakutani wrote in a New York Times review.

For her part, Parnes, a senior White House correspondent at The Hill, argued that she and Allen reported in their book the story that was told to them.

“I think every presidential campaign obviously has a level of drama. This one, I think, was pretty extraordinary,” she told Hewitt. “You know, they can say what they want to say, that it wasn’t the campaign they knew, but, you know, we talked to hundreds of people. This is their story from inside the campaign. This is what they told us. You know, we weren’t talking to outsiders for this book.”

Sounds good to moi.

Bernie Sanders is taking over the Democratic Party

This week, the party chair he opposed, former Labor Secretary Tom Perez, is joining with the Vermont senator on a second "come together and fight back" tour of "red" and "purple" states. It includes a stop Thursday in Grand Prairie, where Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, the deputy chairman and a Sanders ally, will represent Perez.

The goal, Sanders said Sunday on CNN, is to "see that the Democratic party becomes a 50-state party, a bottom up grass roots party that is prepared to stand up to the big money interests."

The tour, similar to one last month, illustrates the degree to which the party's national leadership is latching onto his economic message. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, among others, have joined Sanders in rallies on issues from health care to immigration.

Meanwhile, in state after state, the Sanders forces are moving either to take over the existing party machinery or to set up their own state or even county organizations, Details are a bit hazy since Our Revolution was created as a non profit social welfare organization, exempt from federal disclosure rules for political action committees.

It's also been playing an active role in the post-2016 electoral landscape. The Democrat who ran an unexpectedly close race in last week's Kansas special congressional election was a Sanders backer, as is Rob Quist, seeking Montana's lone House seat May 25.

In perhaps the biggest test for Sanders' continuing clout, he is supporting Tom Perriello, the former congressman who is challenging Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam for the Democratic nomination for governor of Virginia. A Perriello victory in the June 13 primary -- and November's general election -- would be a major boost for the Sanders wing and a setback for outgoing Gov. Terry McAuliffe, one of the leaders of the party establishment that backed Clinton last year.

All of this means the political machine being created by the Independent Vermont senator (still not a registered Democrat) could become a strong underpinning if he decides, at age 78, to undertake a second presidential bid in 2020.

Cornel West & Former Sanders Staffer on Movement to Draft Bernie for a New "People's Party" in U.S.

quote:

NICK BRANA:
One of the reasons that we decided to do this was we looked—we’ve looked over the past few months at Bernie. Bernie is working furiously to change the Democratic Party, you know. And, unfortunately, what we’ve seen is that the Democratic Party is still losing supporters. That’s incredible. The most popular politician in the country cannot stem the tide. He compared it to the Titanic. Bernie compared it to the Titanic, a sinking ship, recently, the Democratic Party. And he’s right. And once you realize that people continue to leave the Democratic Party, you see that Bernie’s role is not necessarily as being able to bring people into the party. None of us can do that. People recognize that the party doesn’t represent them. Rather, what he’s doing is he’s slowing the dissolution of the party.

And if Bernie were instead—the momentum is towards an independent alternative. That’s why people are leaving the Democratic Party, even with Bernie there. If Bernie were to switch sides, join—go with the populist progressive current, the party would collapse. And that is something which would allow a genuine opposition party, progressive populist party, to arise, because right now the Democratic Party is blocking something like that from emerging.

quote:

NICK BRANA: That’s right. So, this is something that we’re trying to convince Bernie, actively, to show him now is the time to do this. Now is when—now is when people are ready, tens of millions of people, the following that you built. You can actually bring this into a new party at the time. And that’s why I’m really excited, actually, to make an announcement on Democracy Now! and to announce that Dr. West and I would like to invite Bernie Sanders to a town hall at which we can discuss this issue and other issues facing the progressive movement. I think it’s time for the progressive movement to discuss this question openly, Amy, about whether it’s time to have an independent alternative.

AMY GOODMAN: Well, Professor West, there has been some interesting controversy. I wanted to ask you about Senator Sanders’ support of Omaha, Nebraska, mayoral candidate Heath Mello. Sanders spoke at a rally for Mello last week as part of the Democratic National Committee unity tour. While serving in the Nebraska Legislature, Heath Mello sponsored anti-choice legislation. He was endorsed by the Nebraska Right to Life group in 2010. In an article for Rewire, Imami Gandy wrote, quote, "Bernie Sanders and many of his supporters seem perfectly content to categorize reproductive rights and abortion access as a social issue—a distraction from economic justice and reforming Wall Street, which they deem the so-called real issues. And that simply doesn’t work, because reproductive justice and economic justice are inexorably intertwined," Imani Gandy wrote. Can you respond to this?

Omaha Mayoral Candidate Under Fire For Anti-Choice Past Vows To Protect Reproductive Rights

quote:

PPVN, the political arm of the family-planning organization, pushed back on the claim that it gave Heath Mello a 100 percent rating. The group’s scorecard from 2011 shows Mello “voting against Planned Parenthood’s position on three votes ― all abortion related.”

“Planned Parenthood Voters of Nebraska has never endorsed Heath Mello for public office nor has Planned Parenthood Voters of Nebraska given Heath Mello a 100% rating, as some media outlets have erroneously reported,” the group said in a statement.

“Heath Mello has introduced and supported anti-choice legislation during his time at the Nebraska Unicameral, and Planned Parenthood Voters of Nebraska strongly opposed him when he took such actions,” the statement continues. “Over the course of Heath Mello’s campaign for Omaha Mayor he has said loud and clear he supports Planned Parenthood and wants to protect the work we do. Although he has not started that conversation with us, our door is always open and we welcome the opportunity to start a productive dialogue on how Heath Mello can help us promote and protect access to women’s health care in Nebraska.”

Mello confirmed in his statement that he is personally opposed to abortion rights in general. “While my faith guides my personal views, as Mayor I would never do anything to restrict access to reproductive health care,” he said in a statement.

It’s unclear if that distinction will help him regain the support of groups that have moved against him. It aligns with the position of some Democrats like Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), who have expressed personal opposition to abortion rights but have promised not to legislate based on those views. Mello, however, has already legislated based on those views and is now pledging not to do so again.

Is This Small City the Future of Democratic Engagement in America?

quote:

The organization, Hines explains, is a way for people who are sick of the status quo “to come together, to get plugged in.” It’s a polite and strategic description, but there’s plenty more to say.

Founded in the wake of Trump’s victory and led by a 12-person leadership committee, Lancaster Stands Up aims to upend politics-as-usual in this central Pennsylvania city. It wants nothing less than to break the stranglehold of both the Democratic and Republican establishments here and replace them with a progressive multi-racial political force beholden to the people alone. And it is using the tools of long-haul grassroots activism—canvassing, vetting candidates, bird-dogging political foes, forming unlikely alliances, training leaders, convening meetings—to build its constituency.

quote:

“After Trump’s election, I knew I had to do something,” says Eliza Booth, a 39-year-old black woman, lifelong Lancaster resident, and member of the group’s leadership committee. “I needed to get involved and plug in instead of staying at home and being depressed.”

A passionate Bernie Sanders supporter, Booth worked on his campaign during the Democratic primary and says she still believes he would have beat Trump in the general election. But Sanders didn’t make it that far and Trump, whom she describes as “a monster,” made it all the way to the White House. Like so many others, the outcome shocked and dismayed her.

A few days after the election, though, Booth saw a flyer announcing an emergency mass meeting in town. She decided to attend and found a huge turnout. At least 250 people were there. They had come to vent their anger and share their anxieties, to talk to their neighbors and plot a progressive comeback. It was the debut of Lancaster Stands Up, and Booth was smitten. Since then, she has spent 10, sometimes 20 hours a week volunteering for the group on top of her full-time job.

“It makes me feel so inspired every day,” she says. “It makes me feel less alone in the fight.”

Hunger Strike by Palestinian Prisoners Reaches Day 18

quote:

Paul Jay: Now there's been some controversy in the United States. A letter sent by all the senators, I don't think a single one didn't sign it, critiqued the United Nations for being anti-Israel, having and anti-Israel bias. It quotes Nikki Haley, the US ambassador in the letter. It calls for the United Nations to treat Israel as fair, not more, not less fair than it treats any other country, and says that in fact, Israel is treated unfairly because it gets critiqued more than other countries. Bernie Sanders was one of the senators that signed this. He's been getting a lot of flack about this. It surprised I think a lot of people that were supporters of Sanders, because during the Democratic Party platform committee negotiations, Bernie Sanders appointed Cornell West to represent him there. West, Cornell took a very strong position in support of Palestinian rights and waged quite a big and public fight to change the language of the DNC platform. Clearly he did that being endorsed by Bernie Sanders, but then Bernie signs this letter which also indirectly critiques the BDS movement the Boycott Divestment Sanctions movement. What did you make of that?

Abby Martin: God, I mean I can't say I was shocked, but I am disgusted. Look, like we were talking before the broadcast, I mean the human rights council is completely absurd on its face, right? The fact that Saudi members a member, the fact that Saudi Arabia is even waging like human rights councils on behalf of women, I mean it's completely vile and absurdly hypocritical. In that sense, yeah sure of course you should criticize Saudi Arabia. But when you look at the other biggest ally to the US empire, which is Israel, and you know Bernie Sanders is kind of poo pooing this. Subsequently after this letter was signed, he did this extensive interview with Al Jazeera. It really bothered me, Paul because he's sitting there saying, he's just completely shooing it off as if it's not a big issue. He's saying, "Why are people so obsessed with Israel?" Oh, I'm sure you could tell your thousands of Palestinian constituents who have been ethnically cleansed and expelled from their homeland that this isn't an issue that they should be obsessed with. That they should be protesting the Saudi embassy instead, because women can't drive. I mean, this whataboutism is absurd. This is one of the most gravest humanitarian crises in the world, that we are funding with our tax dollars. Don't tell me that we shouldn't be obsessed with it, and its anti semitic to want to boycott a country that is one of the only settler colonial states that is openly ethnically cleansing people as we speak. It's a disgrace, Paul. The whole Keith Ellison smear campaign, Bernie Sanders smear campaign, they were called anti semites for daring to even speak about the Palestinians as they were human beings. Now we have this kind of 180 where Bernie Sanders is somehow feels pressured to play all fields, all sides, where he wants to sign this letter. He should've been the only senator to not sign the letter, because when you're calling BDS anti semitic, you're going down a very slippery slope to reveal that we have zero allies for Palestinians in this senate. We have zero allies for Palestinians in the congress. That's really left up to the people, Paul. We're not going to look the government for help on this issue.
