Well, there is talk that Canada is going to send lots more UN peacekeepers. Maybe they can try to prevent Saudi aggression in the region. It would be ironic if Canadian-made weapons sold to the Saudi terror regime were used against Canadian troops!

What´s at stake here of course is control over the Shia populations of Southern Saudi Arabia. the heart of their oil industry...surely this needs careful monitoring!

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Yemeni army and popular forces attacked a strategic region in Najran and took control of Saudi Arabia's biggest military base in the Southern province.

"The Yemeni forces gained control of the biggest military base in Najran region and seized all the arms and weapon systems there, including missiles and tanks," Abdul Sattar al-Matari, a commander of resistance forces, told FNA on Thursday.

Also, Ali al-Hamzani, a commander of the Yemeni popular forces, said that the Yemeni forces continued their large-scale offensive in the Southern parts of Saudi Arabia, targeting the Saudi military camps in Jizan Region.

He added that his forces managed to capture the Al-Farida military camp in Jizan Region after a fierce battle with the Saudis.

In addition to capturing this military site, the Yemeni forces seized the Saudi Army's heavy weapons and Abrams tanks that were left behind, Hamzani said.

Al-Farida military camp is located near the contested city of al-Khabuh in Jizan region; it was one of the Saudi army's main bases in this area.

U.S. may be violating laws of war 'if U.S. personnel are not aware if targets are civilian or military...or if the operation is even militarily necessary'

byNadia Prupis, staff writer 17 Comments

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) said the absence of any consequences for the U.S. up till now does not mean the military can ignore the rules of armed conflict. (Photo: Getty)

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) is warning the Obama administration that U.S. military personnel could be prosecuted for war crimes for their role in the Saudi Arabia-led coalition bombings of Yemen.

In a letter (pdf) sent Thursday to Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Ash Carter, Lieu said American assistance in mid-air refueling and other military support has enabled the coalition to bomb hospitals, schools, and civilian populations amid the fight against the Houthi rebels.

Promising to take precautions does not preclude the U.S. from being complicit in war crimes, the congressman and former Air Force Reserve colonel said.

"I find it deeply troubling that the U.S. apparently has no advanced knowledge of what targets will be struck by jets that are refueled by U.S. personnel with U.S. tankers. Reports last month revealed that State Department lawyers were concerned about potential violations of the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) by the coalition, but the administration nevertheless chose to proceed to aid and abet the coalition," Lieu wrote.

The letter came in response to a statement by a senior official on Wednesday that U.S. support for the coalition does not include "target selection and review."

...to be watched carefully, as Canada likewise has no stipulatios re its military support of the Saudi Arabia  terrorist activities anywhere!

from HRW...

The US may be complicit in ‘atrocities’ that are taking place in Yemen as part of the Saudi-led military operation, a recent Human Rights Watch (HRW) report suggests.

More than 160 people were killed over a one-month period in airstrikes in Yemen, carried out by the Saudi-led coalition using bombs and missiles bought from the US, the New York-based human rights activist group said Thursday. HRW also urged the imposition of an arms embargo on Saudi Arabia over the war in Yemen.’

This story is a bit of a joke. Over the years, the USA has supplied hundreds of billions (that's right, billions) of dollars worth of armaments to Saudi Arabia.

In 2010 the USA and Saudi Arabia signed a USD $60 billion dollar arms sale agreement. The biggest arms sale in the history of the the United States. Contrast that with the possible withholding of a few millions worth of arms.

Why does yemen receive get no tv press in North America.  I don't want to minimize the horror of war for individuals.

Aleppo - Do you remember how the Russian were the Huns of today.  Bombing civilians every day we had pictures and when it was half of city was burned it out wreck.  Something you would see in Nazi Germany at the end of the war.  I remember the press calling for war crimes because of civilian bombing.

Compare the destruction Raqqa it was media void.  The city was a ruin but the media just show an image or two and it was case closed.

Compare Yemen people are actually starving to death and cholera is taking lives.  And yes the Yemen conflict is a media void.

How does it work?  Where is the tv coverage?

Michael Moriarity

Chomsky has been explaining how this works for decades now, but they won't put him on tv long enough to tell the tale. His 1989 book Necessary Illusions (which was originally a set of Massey Lectures) shows in great detail how the facts of the illegal attacks on Nicaragua by the Reagan administration were either unreported, or reported in a way that was the opposite of the truth. The same principles have applied in all the subsequent U.S. agressions against tiny, helpless states like Yemen.

Were the Taliban better than Assad, more tolerant, more democratic, more protective of minorities? Questions to answer for Intercept: (a) Do you sympathize with the US-UK-French missile raids on Syria? (b) if the West and Israel topple Assad who would you like in his place? A Sunni dictatorship divided into Jihadi factions as in post-conquest Libya? Or an Iraqi model of de facto partition with Turkey making the Kurdish areas an effective protectorate? There is no third chance I'm afraid. The dilemma is terrible but it must be faced. Imperialist petulance at being denied Syria is no excuse for progressives to crumble." Do you disagree with the condemnation of MBS, then, NDPP? I read the earlier article by Hasan that Tariq Ali is commenting on, but I didn't post it. I don't understand the situation in Syria well enough to even have an informed opinion. The Saudi Arabian attacks on Yemen seem to me to be a more clear cut case of victims and oppressors.

NDPP

I don't disagree with the condemnation of MBS. But I very much disagree with the linked article on Syria five lines in. It's trash. Unlike you, I understand Syria very well, and have been posting about it here for several years now. Tariq Ali is right. The choices are simple: Assad or the terrorists. Canada has thus far demonstrated it is for regime change and terrorists. Thankfully it would appear Canada has lost and Syria will win. Too bad the Intercept seems to want to go the way of the Guardian with 'cliches and demagogy'. Too bad there's not more attention to Yemen, instead of news of imaginary 'chemical attacks' spread by White Helmets.
