BAR: Democrats Gone Mad: The Year of Living Stupidly  -  by Glen Ford

https://blackagendareport.com/dems_gone_mad_dangerous_year

"Nobody voted for the War Party in November of 2016, but that's who's in power. Which is why both Democrats and Republicans talk of virtually nothing but Russians and war. Polls show most voters think there's no evidence that Trump 'colluded' with Russia, and they believe that much of what they see in the mainstream is 'fake news.'

For more than a year now, the collective US ruling class, with Democratic Party and corporate media executives in the vanguard, has frozen the national political discourse in a McCarthyite time warp..."

The Russian lawyer who met with Donald Trump Jr. and others on the Trump team after a promise of compromising material on Hillary Clinton was accompanied by a Russian-American lobbyist — a former Soviet counterintelligence officer who is suspected by some U.S. officials of having ongoing ties to Russian intelligence, NBC News has learned.

The lobbyist, first identified by the Associated Press as Rinat Akhmetshin, denies any current ties to Russian spy agencies

Well, I'd say it's official, the right-wing has abandoned Donald Trump. Today's National Post had two op-ed pieces, one from staff, and one from Bloomberg News, both taking issue with Trump and his inability ot handle things.

The National Post staff writer refers to 'amateurs in the White House', and Bloomberg, while not quite as blatant, but says in the article:

..."I see this supposed nothing burger as a tipping point. From now on, it strains credulity to give the President and his aides any benefit of the doubt when it comes to Russia."

Pretty strong words for a Trump defender. But I think they now realize the whole right-wing agenda is at stake, and they'd rather lose Trump than lose their power.

So the last Trump supporters will, strangely enough, be those handful of Stalinist lefties who are a bit like Jonestown true believers, waiting for their turn at the kool-aid.

I don't understand why Trump/Russia would lead to war. Whether or not you think there is anything to the allegations, the investigation is a strictly internal issue for the United States. The US and the USSR didn't go to war over the Rosenbergs.

More from that silly Counterpunch...

"...Which brings us back to his policy towards Russia, which is in self-contradictory tatters. According to MSN news, Trump tweeted on Sunday, July 9 that 'sanctions were not discussed at my meeting with President Putin...' But according to the Washington Post (which is not the most dependable source in reporting anything to do with Russia, but in this case seems to be accurate) 'Immediately after Friday's meeting with Vladimir Putin, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the President told his Russian counterpart that members of Congress are pushing for additional sanctions...'

No foreign service, no government, no country, can operate effectively in international affairs when there are contradictory statements at such levels about matters of enormous importance. Nobody knows where they stand, and Trump's tweet fandangos serve only to further complicate US-Russia relations about which there are increasingly grave doubts.

The rabid anti-Russia diatribes in the US Senate have made it clear that no matter what Trump might try to do in order to establish cordial relations, both US political partners are inflexible in their determination that no peaceful progress will be permitted.

There is a major split in government in Washington, with President Trump - of all people - apparently intent on seeking balanced rapprochment with Russia, while the political Establishment and the Pentagon, backed to the hilt by the Fourth Estate, are relentlessly intent on a malevolent campaign of insult, innuendo and increasing military deployment close to Russia's borders in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania.

The United States is sending mixed messages to Russia, but they are equally clear: on one hand there is desire for mutually beneficial rapprochment and on the other there is determination to intensify military and economic confrontation. If these conflicts continue, there will be confrontation. If the Washington Warriors succeed in their campaign of malevolent hostility there will be war."

The Counterpunch article in Post #208 goes considerably beyond saying that "Russiagate" will lead to war, which was the thesis pushed in the earlier Counterpunch piece I was replying to. Yeah, it's possible, I suppose, that an overall aggressive policy toward Russia could lead to all-out war. But an internal investigation into alleged Russian espionage in the US would be an insignificant part of that, if indeed it played any role at all.

Rev Pesky

From the Counterpunch article:

There is a major split in government in Washington, with President Trump - of all people - apparently intent on seeking balanced rapprochment with Russia...

This is just plain old hogwash. Trump has been all over the map on Russia, changing his mind on a more or less daily basis. As someone said, he thinks whatever the last person he talked to thinks.

And does anyone really need reminding that no one is going to start a way with Russia. Russia has nuclear weapons, and Vladimir Putin has been very clear that he would use them.

The government of the United States, along with the Senate, the House, the military, the judicial, and every other government body one could think of, are all there to defend capitalism. And the last thing capitalism wants is a nuclear war. A regular war, fine. Lots of bombs and planes and boats to sell, and everyone gets rich. The problem with nuclear war is that it destroys the ability of capital to survive.

That's why war is carried on these days by imposing sanctions, building trading  blocks, etc. No matter who was president of the USA, they wouldn't be tossing nuclear bombs around.

Meantime, another right-wing writer has abandoned Trump. Charles Krauthammer, in a column published today in the National Post has this to say, in part, about the Trump Jr. meeting:

It's rather pathetic to hear Trump apologists protest that it's no big deal...

This defence is pathetic for two reasons. First, have the Trumpites not been telling us for six months that no collusion ever happened? And now they say: Sure it happened. So wha? Everyone does it. What's left of your credibility when you make such a casual about-face? Second, no, not everyone does it....

...There is no statute against helping a foreign hostile power meddle in an American election. What Donald Jr. - and Kushner and Manafort - did  may not be criminal. But it is not merely stupid. It is also deeply wrong.

...I leave it to the lawyers to adjudicate the legalities of unconsummated collusion. But you don't need a lawyer to see that the Trump defence  - collusion as a desperate Democrat fiction designed to explain away a lost election - is now officially dead.

Krauthammer has been a defender of all things Republican for as long as I can remember.

Meanwhile, the Senate Republicans have delayed that vote on their not ready for prime-time health care plan yet again.  They dont' have the votes to get it passed. Some commentator, I don't remember who, referred to this administration as a 'Confederacy of Dunces'. Whoever it was, they were being too kind.

Trump’s Worst Collusion Isn’t With Russia — It’s With Corporations

quote:

“The effects of the crime are undetectable,” the legendary social critic Noam Chomsky says of the alleged Russian meddling, “unlike the massive effects of interference by corporate power and private wealth.”

That’s worth dwelling on.

Many leading liberals suspect, now with a little more evidence, that Trump worked with Russia to win his election. But we’ve long known that huge corporations and wealthy individuals threw their weight behind the billionaire.

That gambit’s paying off far more handsomely for them — and more destructively for the rest of us — than any scheme by Putin.

The evidence is hiding in plain sight.

The top priority in Congress right now is to move a health bill that would gut Medicaid and throw at least 22 million Americans off their insurance — while loosening regulations on insurance companies and cutting taxes on the wealthiest by over $346 billion.

As few as 12 percent of Americans support that bill, but the allegiance of its supporters isn’t to voters — it’s plainly to the wealthy donors who’d get those tax cuts.

Meanwhile, majorities of Americans in every single congressional district support efforts to curb local pollution, limit carbon emissions, and transition to wind and solar. And majorities in every single state back the Paris climate agreement.

SeekingAPolitic...

I just saw short clip on cbc, they sent someone into pennsylvania to talk to trump supporters and regualar people.  The person that conconluded that most people cared little about russia.  When the presenter CBC heard this he commented that people should be concerned because they are Americans.  To that the pennsylvania reporter just said are busy and they want answers for healthcare and jobs.  They showed a family where the father working 3 jobs to keep his family feed and he very time to think geo politics since to busy trying to stay a float.  This why democracts lost they had no answers for these individuals rather the democratics would not even acknownledge that this situation exists.  For democracts we never had so good but atleast Trump ackownlenged that this exists and he would will America great.  Trump maybe a flawed and liar but he is better in tune was is happening in US.  The democracts dont care and republicans will further put the screws to these people.

Lets move on the immagration how is playing in that part of Penn.  The cbc reporter talked about the a woman that is bearly holding on finincal and hostile to immagration becasue she see'sthe government will her use meager wealth subsuize the immagrates.  How can I condem this women, she does not reconigne that she was told lies why she poor.  The immagrants are not talking her resources but rather she is pitted agaisnt powerless group of people to fight over the scraps that are left to them.  While top few percent hold on and increase their share national income and wealth.  Democrats and Repulicans have no interest in discussing this situation much doing something about.  And trump walks in and harrnesses this anger and ignorance to win the election.  This just is sad situation.

Bernie and Trump are the politicail reaction to the  sick and dying society.  Trump will fail his main mission is to be an ememerncy release button on political steam cooker.  I hope the Dems get their stuff together because someone worst and more dangerous is coming after 4 years of faliure that trump will be.  Russia has nothing to do with this dynamic.  Thats I view things things.

Trump is beginning to fall apart:

Trump laments Sessions hiring

U.S. President Donald Trump told The New York Times in an interview Wednesday that he never would have appointed Jeff Sessions as attorney general had he known Sessions would recuse himself from overseeing the Russia investigation.

In an extraordinary denouncement of one of his earliest backers in Washington, Trump said the decision by Sessions to recuse himself from all matters related to Russia was "very unfair to the president."

"Sessions should have never recused himself," Trump told the paper, "and if he was going to recuse himself he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else."

...In the interview, Trump also appeared to threaten Mueller, suggesting he had damaging information on the former FBI director.

Trump said Mueller's selection for the job was a conflict of interest because Trump had interviewed him to serve as the replacement FBI director.

"There were many other conflicts that I haven't said, but I will at some point," Trump said.

...He lobbed similar conflict of interest charges at acting FBI director Andrew McCabe and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and accused former FBI director James Comey of briefing him on a dossier of unverified, incriminating information in an effort to gain leverage over the soon-to-be president.

It's one thing to rail away against your enemies. It's something completely different to rail away against your friends. Usually it means they won't be your friends much longer. It's also the syptom of someone who is losing their grip.

Trumps ego prevents him from accepting the truth, the fact that he is incapable of performing the duties of the president of the USA. The only thing he can do is keep blaming everyone else for his problems. In fact he is acting exactly as his wife suggested he was. That is, an emotional ten year-old. Will he grow up? I doubt it, but anything is possible.

Dems Add Neocons to Anti-Trump 'Resistance'

quote:

Aaron Maté: Yeah, and it's interesting to remember that just a few years ago you didn't see this huge anti-Russia hysteria, at least from some Democrats that are now being a part of it. When Obama made fun of Mitt Romney at their 2012 campaign debate, when he said the '80s want their foreign policy back after Romney called Russia the U.S.'s biggest geopolitical threat, everybody backed Obama. The Democrats were behind him. It was ridiculed to be sort of beating the drums of this new cold war. But after Trump wins, it's just radically changed.

James Carden: Yeah, it shows how opportunistic really all of this is in a way. And I think that the Democrats are really not doing themselves any favors by this sole focus on Russia. I think last week, the DNC and the RNC released their fundraising numbers, and the RNC is outraising the DNC by quite a lot. And the Democratic Party's popularity is on par with Donald Trump's popularity. So they're not really doing themselves any favors. I think that they're going to sort of assign themselves to electoral irrelevance if they keep this up. And they'll deserve it.

Aaron Maté: James, is a part of this just the fact that it's a lucrative hustle to be a hawk, no matter what party you're in? I mean you worked at the State Department, so you've probably seen this up close. You know, groups like this, The Alliance for Securing Democracy, have a lot of money behind them. And so if you're out there advocating a détente with Russia, deescalating tensions, it's not very profitable. But it is, if you're cheerleading for war. Am I right?

James Carden: I can speak to that with some authority because I'm the executive director of The American Committee for East-West Accord, which has for the last couple of years been promoting the idea of détente between the United States and Russia. I can assure you that there's not a lot of money in that. So, you're exactly right, it's a think-tank hustle; that's where the money is. And that's where people go. And it's a deeply cynical enterprise.

Michael Moriarity

I agree that this business of magnifying the Russian threat, which is actually quite minor, into something to go apeshit about is very dangerous, and is lavishly funded by the war industries. However, none of that changes the fact, as recently documented once again in a long article in The New Republic, that Trump is a failed businessman, who has been owned by the corrupt Russian power structure since the turn of the century or earlier. It starts out like this:

Craig Unger wrote:

In 1984, a Russian émigré named David Bogatin went shopping for apartments in New York City. The 38-year-old had arrived in America seven years before, with just $3 in his pocket. But for a former pilot in the Soviet Army—his specialty had been shooting down Americans over North Vietnam—he had clearly done quite well for himself. Bogatin wasn’t hunting for a place in Brighton Beach, the Brooklyn enclave known as “Little Odessa” for its large population of immigrants from the Soviet Union. Instead, he was fixated on the glitziest apartment building on Fifth Avenue, a gaudy, 58-story edifice with gold-plated fixtures and a pink-marble atrium: Trump Tower.

A monument to celebrity and conspicuous consumption, the tower was home to the likes of Johnny Carson, Steven Spielberg, and Sophia Loren. Its brash, 38-year-old developer was something of a tabloid celebrity himself. Donald Trump was just coming into his own as a serious player in Manhattan real estate, and Trump Tower was the crown jewel of his growing empire. From the day it opened, the building was a hit—all but a few dozen of its 263 units had sold in the first few months. But Bogatin wasn’t deterred by the limited availability or the sky-high prices. The Russian plunked down $6 million to buy not one or two, but five luxury condos. The big check apparently caught the attention of the owner. According to Wayne Barrett, who investigated the deal for the Village Voice, Trump personally attended the closing, along with Bogatin.

If the transaction seemed suspicious—multiple apartments for a single buyer who appeared to have no legitimate way to put his hands on that much money—there may have been a reason. At the time, Russian mobsters were beginning to invest in high-end real estate, which offered an ideal vehicle to launder money from their criminal enterprises. “During the ’80s and ’90s, we in the U.S. government repeatedly saw a pattern by which criminals would use condos and high-rises to launder money,” says Jonathan Winer, a deputy assistant secretary of state for international law enforcement in the Clinton administration. “It didn’t matter that you paid too much, because the real estate values would rise, and it was a way of turning dirty money into clean money. It was done very systematically, and it explained why there are so many high-rises where the units were sold but no one is living in them.” When Trump Tower was built, as David Cay Johnston reports in The Making of Donald Trump, it was only the second high-rise in New York that accepted anonymous buyers.

There is a mountain of evidence, going back to 1984. Russia totally owns Trump, and has for decades.

That is an interesting question. I was sort of naively assuming that there is a difference between what we would normally call a legitimate business person who generally obeys the law, and the leader of a criminal gang which commits murder, theft, and fraud as part of its business plan. If we reject any such distinction, then Trump is no worse than Obama or Bush or Clinton. In their cases, at least the crimes that founded the fortunes they served were mostly committed a generation or so back. Now that you have raised this explicitly, I'm not sure what I think. I need to let the idea simmer in my unconscious for a while.

If it were alleged that the mayor of a city was getting free rent from a developer who was also seeking building-permits from the city, I think the media would report that with a little more urgency than they would report the fact that municipal government policies seem overly beholden to the interests of developers in general.

And I don't think that's neccessarily because the media would be trying to distract attention from the inequities of the political or business classes generally.  Rightly or wrongly, old-fashioned, envelope-under-the-table corruption gets more press than do systemic inequities.

And it's not just the media either. I recall left-wingers in BC being pretty enthusiastic about publicizing Gordon Campbell's DUI conviction back in the early 2000s, even though at the end of the day, that almost certainly harmed WAY fewer people than his government's actual policies did. But if there were a lot of voices on the left saying "But, but, drunk-driving isn't the real issue here!!", I don't recall them getting a lot of airplay.

The Russian president says that his patience has worn out waiting for improved relations with the U.S.

Breakups are always dramatic.

"And take back those mixed tapes you made for me, too", said Putin.  "They were totally lame, like you!!  And don't even TRY to get back at me on Facebook, unless you want your Mom to see those pictures!!!"

Russian Diplomat Comments on New US Sanctions

http://tass.com/politics/958239

"Regrettably, our calls, our patience, our readiness to demonstrate good will, not to yield to emotions, are finite. We are forced to take response measures,' Ryabkov said in an interview with Rossiya 1 TV channel. 'These are not sanctions but Russia's response measure to even the balance.'

If the US, in its anti-Russian frenzy, tries to do anything else to harm us, a tit-for-tat reaction will follow. It is a negative spiral,' he said."

Intel Vets Challenge 'Russia Hack' Evidence

https://t.co/e32NPZwK27

"In a memo to Trump, US Intelligence veterans cite new forensic evidence undermining 'Russia hack' narrative..."

Forensic studies of “Russian hacking” into Democratic National Committee computers last year reveal that on July 5, 2016, data was leaked (not hacked) by a person with physical access to DNC computers, and then doctored to incriminate Russia.

So was July 7, 2016 before or after May 2016? I suppose some things we'll never know.
