That's not strictly speaking true. Donald Trump won the election, he did not win the popular vote. The people of the United States chose Hilary Clinton, but Trump won the electoral college vote.
I'm not arguing with the election results. That's their system, and Trump won legitimately within that system. But one cannot say that he was the popular choice for president, because he wasn't.

I saw the same article this morning with the same concerns. Canada is in for a shock if this follows through.
This indicates that the strategy of the Liberals, the basket all our eggs are in, might not work.
The strategy of the Liberals is not to go direct to the Administration but to all the other interested US politicians and businesses. This would seem to be sound in normal time. Enough lower support can filter up in a functional administration.
Unfortunately, what this article also states is that Trump, with a cabinet that numbers about two dozen is prepared to over-rule all of them, so long as he pleases his base and a couple freakishly extreme and ignorant enablers (controlers?). This really diminishes and even potentially discards all but direct influence.
The reason Canada has this strategy seems to be due to a fear of provoking anger from a touchy, contradictory and vengeful administration: To fly under the radar. It may turn out that this is a gross miscalculation if the strategy Canada is employing cannot reach the administration and direct engagement while risky might have the only potential for benefit.

Making low-income Americans work to qualify for aid has long been couched in the language of personal responsibility, dignity, and civic and moral duty. While work requirements are widely regarded as darlings of the conservative agenda, few recognize the role that faith-based organizations have played in lending these policies ideological and practical support. Geographer Jason Hackworth terms this phenomenon “religious neoliberalism,” the “ideational fusion” between free-market ideologues and religious conservatives. These two groups, Hackworth argues, are bound through a mutual “faith in the market, faith in the individual, and faith in a small (or nonexistent) government.”
Arguably nowhere is this ideological fusion more prominent than in the faith-based — or, rather, faith-saturated — job-readiness program called Jobs for Life (JFL). This is whay Assange should not be a judge and enforcer as he so often is. He clearly has no clue as to the meaning of blackmail. Blackmail is about demanding something unrelated that you are not otherwise entitled to in exchange for not sharing something compromising.
In this case, the demand is not for a benefit the outlet was not entitled to but a requirement that the person not continue something that was wrong. This is a huge distinction of the sort someone with the power and reach of Assange ought to understand.
As well the issues are connected. The media had every right to expose the person and still continue to. They have offered as a gesture to give up that right provided the person not continue the circumstances that lead that exposure to be in the public interest. The deal is about offering that if the culprit does what would be necessary to not make it a public interest and continuing story, it won't have to be.
It is rather pathetic of Assange to be unable to see the logical connections here, to recognize that what is being threatened is what the news outlet already had the right to do, in exchange for the person refriaing from doing what they had no right to do. Assange has it backwards.
In fact, by Assange's tortured logic any legitimate threat by anyone offering consequences for a persons' future wrong action would become blackmail. Assange should start with a dictionary.
