The Israeli-ISIS Accomodation and Other Inconvenient Realities

https://t.co/6iU4Qt2YXS

"...In reality, it seems there's some sort of accommodation between Israel and ISIS - and the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda, that has been studiously ignored in the US press. But the long-standing Israeli ambition of decimating the front line states - especially Syria and Iraq - seem to be playing out very smoothly. This is apparently also the goal of the US establishment, as well as selling arms (always a prime objective).

This is evident from Trump's travel itinerary: Going to Israel and Saudi Arabia which both benefit from the demise of secular Arab states (and buy lots of US weapons)."

The Activities Around Trump's Foreign Policy Are Scandalous - But the Media Won't Tell You Why

https://t.co/DP9LbtXP01

"...The scandal here is not Trump and not his advisors' contacts with Russian officials. The scandals are the leaks by 'officials' about confidential diplomacy, the sham FBI 'investigations' and the general undemocratic hostility and resistance of the foreign policy establishment, the security services and the media towards the president's chosen policies. This is completely independent of whether one likes those policies or not."

From the Moon of Alabama article posted above:

The people of the United States made their choice. It was Trump and his views of policies that were elected.

That's not strictly speaking true. Donald Trump won the election, he did not win the popular vote. The people of the United States chose Hilary Clinton, but Trump won the electoral college vote.

I'm not arguing with the election results. That's their system, and Trump won legitimately within that system. But one cannot say that he was the popular choice for president, because he wasn't.

..captain self destructo strikes again

Angela Merkel: EU cannot completely rely on US and Britain any more

quote:

The two-day G7 summit in Italy pitted the US president – whom Merkel did not mention by name – against the leaders of Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Canada and Japan on several issues.

The leaders vowed to fight protectionism, reiterating a “commitment to keep our markets open”; step up pressure on North Korea; cooperate more closely on terrorism; and look into placing tougher sanctions on Russia.

During his election campaign, Trump frequently questioned the value of the EU, welcomed Britain’s vote to leave the bloc and spoke positively of anti-EU politicians such as the French far-right leader Marine Le Pen.

Merkel said the result of the G7 talks, which she described as “six against one”, was “very difficult, if not to say very unsatisfactory”. Trump was more positive on Twitter, saying: “Just returned from Europe. Trip was a great success for America. Hard work but big results!”

But while six of the seven renewed their commitment to the 2015 Paris accord on climate change, Trump said he needed more time to decide.

quote:

Responding to Merkel’s plea for EU unity – potentially significant in view of Britain’s upcoming Brexit negotiations with the EU27 – the Liberal Democrats said they were the “inevitable outcome” of Theresa May’s decision to position herself closely with Trump.

“The prime minister has allied herself with Donald Trump and these comments are the inevitable outcome,” Lib Dem leader Tim Farron said. “It doesn’t have to be this way; a vote for the Liberal Democrats can change Britain’s future.”

We need a new defence strategy – Donald Trump has hung Europe out to dry

quote:

Behind the scenes, Trump’s diplomats signalled it is not just on defence that the multilateral order is under threat. Trump may, as early as this week, pull the US out of the Paris climate treaty. Even if he does not, his commitment to it will be seen as weak. And his aides refused to include a commitment to free trade in the G7 communique.

The true meaning of “America first” is clear. The Trump presidency will put the interests of American coal, oil and fracking companies first, before that of the planet’s ecosystem. It will place the interests of US-owned car manufacturers first, above those of Volkswagen and Mercedes. And if it comes to a military face-off with Putin’s Russia, America will fight last.

This rip in the global order may last only four years. Or it may snowball.

Either way, it is now rational for both the EU powers and the British government to design a new strategy, for a world where, every so often, the US electoral cycle produces a corrupt, deluded isolationist who can think only in monosyllables.

Merkel’s analysis, if followed to its logical conclusion, must trigger a big change in the economic, trade strategy and security policies of the EU. Her speech should lead Europe to consolidate around its core countries and its core values. If that means yellow-carding Hungary and Poland, whose infractions of democratic rights are now too large to be ignored, that’s fine. Likewise, if the result is a core/periphery arrangement, with the core becoming a fiscal and monetary union, the sooner the better.

The Trump administration is moving toward handing back to Russia two diplomatic compounds, near New York City and on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, that its officials were ejected from in late December as punishment for Moscow’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.

President Barack Obama said Dec. 29 that the compounds were being “used by Russian personnel for intelligence-related purposes” and gave Russia 24 hours to vacate them. Separately, Obama expelled from the United States what he said were 35 Russian “intelligence operatives.”

Trump Administration To Cities And States: “The Bigger The Thing You Privatize, The More Money We’ll Give You.”

rump’s long-promised $1 trillion investment in America’s infrastructure turned out to be stealth privatization after all. His budget proposal, released on Tuesday, would cut existing infrastructure programs, privatize the nation’s air traffic control system—a very bad idea—and incentivize public-private partnerships.

But it actually goes further. The administration says it’s considering paying state and local governments to sell off public infrastructure.

In a process called “asset recycling,” cities, counties, and states would sell or lease assets like roads and water systems to private equity investors in exchange for cash to build new infrastructure. The federal government would pay a bonus to local governments that make the deal.

Gary Cohn, director of Trump’s National Economic Council and former president of Goldman Sachs, said, “The bigger the thing you privatize, the more money we’ll give you.”.....

Senate GOP Healthcare Bill Estimated to Kill 28,600 More in U.S. Each Year & Drop 22M from Insurance

quote:

DR. STEFFIE WOOLHANDLER: Well, Trumpcare has no heart whatsoever. The House bill was going to throw 23 million people off insurance. The Senate bill is going to throw 22 million off in 10 years but then keep throwing more off. You know, they’re going to make health insurance worse for people with private coverage by getting rid of the rules about what has to be covered, so your private insurance will no longer have to cover maternity care. They’re actually robbing money from the Medicare trust fund. They’re taking $117 billion out of the Medicare trust fund, which pays for the health insurance when people turn 65. $117 billion is taken out of that trust fund to give tax cuts to the top 1 percent of taxpayers. That is not heart. That’s the opposite of heart.

I saw the same article this morning with the same concerns. Canada is in for a shock if this follows through.

This indicates that the strategy of the Liberals, the basket all our eggs are in, might not work.

The strategy of the Liberals is not to go direct to the Administration but to all the other interested US politicians and businesses. This would seem to be sound in normal time. Enough lower support can filter up in a functional administration.

Unfortunately, what this article also states is that Trump, with a cabinet that numbers about two dozen is prepared to over-rule all of them, so long as he pleases his base and a couple freakishly extreme and ignorant enablers (controlers?). This really diminishes and even potentially discards all but direct influence.

The reason Canada has this strategy seems to be due to a fear of provoking anger from a touchy, contradictory and vengeful administration: To fly under the radar. It may turn out that this is a gross miscalculation if the strategy Canada is employing cannot reach the administration and direct engagement while risky might have the only potential for benefit.

Cleaning Toilets for Jesus

Inside the program teaching submission to capitalism as a divine duty.

Trump’s “taxpayer first” budget proposal, released last month, not only guts social welfare spending, but expands work requirements for low-income recipients of aid. “If you are on food stamps and you are able bodied, we need you to go to work,” declared budget director Mick Mulvaney.

Making low-income Americans work to qualify for aid has long been couched in the language of personal responsibility, dignity, and civic and moral duty. Mulvaney’s comments during the White House briefing were no exception: “There is a dignity to work,” he declared. “And there’s a necessity to work to help the country succeed.”

While work requirements are widely regarded as darlings of the conservative agenda, few recognize the role that faith-based organizations have played in lending these policies ideological and practical support. Geographer Jason Hackworth terms this phenomenon “religious neoliberalism,” the “ideational fusion” between free-market ideologues and religious conservatives. These two groups, Hackworth argues, are bound through a mutual “faith in the market, faith in the individual, and faith in a small (or nonexistent) government.”

Arguably nowhere is this ideological fusion more prominent than in the faith-based — or, rather, faith-saturated — job-readiness program called Jobs for Life (JFL). Founded in 1996 in Raleigh, North Carolina, JFL is a global nonprofit organization premised on the belief that the local church, given its capacity to mobilize the cant of volunteers, is the untapped and ideal “solution” to the enduring social crises of poverty and unemployment....

This is whay Assange should not be a judge and enforcer as he so often is. He clearly has no clue as to the meaning of blackmail. Blackmail is about demanding something unrelated that you are not otherwise entitled to in exchange for not sharing something compromising.

In this case, the demand is not for a benefit the outlet was not entitled to but a requirement that the person not continue something that was wrong. This is a huge distinction of the sort someone with the power and reach of Assange ought to understand.

As well the issues are connected. The media had every right to expose the person and still continue to. They have offered as a gesture to give up that right provided the person not continue the circumstances that lead that exposure to be in the public interest. The deal is about offering that if the culprit does what would be necessary to not make it a public interest and continuing story, it won't have to be.

It is rather pathetic of Assange to be unable to see the logical connections here, to recognize that what is being threatened is what the news outlet already had the right to do, in exchange for the person refriaing from doing what they had no right to do. Assange has it backwards.

In fact, by Assange's tortured logic any legitimate threat by anyone offering consequences for a persons' future wrong action would become blackmail. Assange should start with a dictionary.

Mobo2000

Sean, this has already been decided in the court of public opinion.   Number 1 trending twitter hashtag 2 days in a row was #CNNblackmail.   CNN could not have handled this worse than they did.    Coming shortly after having to retract stories about Trump, and admitting the consensus 17 intelligence agencies had that Russia hacked the election was BS, this is spectacularly bad timing.   The optics couldn't be worse.

"In this case, the demand is not for a benefit the outlet was not entitled to but a requirement that the person not continue something that was wrong."

The person did not do anything wrong.   They made a shitlord troll video making fun of CNN.   Entirely within their rights.   CNN claiming that Trump's post was an incitement to violence was ridiculous.   They should have just ignored it.    Now they are reaping the whirlwind.   So many CNN troll videos on Youtube now its hard to find the funny cat videos.
