Since I am not a Christian, I can only observe this demonstration of "Christian" values. I would think at least some Christians would find this offensive.

I'm not a Christian either, but having grown up in that general area, I can say Moore's brand of Christianity is identical to the kind I grew up surrounded by. No matter who you are or what you've done, you'll be embraced with open arms as long as you hate the right things. Judging by his jump in popularity among evangelicals after these revelations, my experience wasn't some kind of bizarre outlier, either.

What border is the Orange bastard referring to in regards to Jones? The Florida/Alabama border? This guy is a blithering idiot.

Former public defender here—with much experience in these cases—so I'll take this one: not often. In fact, almost never. It's actually one of the crimes most likely to be denied out of not just fear but shame, self-delusion, or pathology. Can't think of a less confessed-to crime.

Retired Officer: We Knew Moore ‘Liked Young Girls,’ But Never Got A Complaint

A retired police officer who worked juvenile cases in Gadsden, Alabama for 37 years said it was well known that Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore “liked young girls” decades ago, but her department never got an official complaint, so there “was really nothing we could do about it.”

It's a feeling of being under siege, Ken. Remember that after the Civil War that the agrarian economy was destroyed, and the Deep South has never completely recovered from that. Then you have Republican cretins taking the legitimate fear and anger in the South and misdirecting it at more vulnerable populations for their own ends. That's why the Jones campaign has effectively told the national party to let him campaign on his own, because he knows that if the Republicans can frame the race as those Yankees trying to impose their will on the South, that the Republicans will win no matter what heinous deeds Moore does. Any other time that might not be an issue, but with the race as close as it is, he does not want to take any chances.

Because that would be why he won?

Seriously??

Moore isn't even competing against Franken.  Are you really suggesting that if Franken doesn't wear a hair shirt, every Democratic candidate is forever after "unsupportable"?  Even after Trump gleefully grabbed them in the p**sy???  Why wouldn't every Republican candidate be similarly tainted until The Donald steps off?

cco

There's typically a tradition of blaming the loser for the winner. I'll admit, I've engaged in my fair share of blaming Hillary for losing to Trump, and I'm not repudiating that. Nevertheless, I'll say that just as the ultimate blame for Trump lies in the hands of those who voted for him, ultimate responsibility for Roy Moore falls on the heads of those who support Roy Moore.

It has to do with hypocricy and politicians using these sexual abuse scandals to score political points rather than actually addressing the issue of sexual misconduct. This especially the case since the main line of attack that the Democrats are using against Moore is that he is accused of sexual misconduct. The problem is they can then point back to the Democrats defending Franken, and then your average voter who decides elections thinks "they're all in it for themselves and don't care about the issues," and that doesn't win anybody over to your side.

Rev Pesky

From Aristotle24:

What Franken did, reprehensible as it may be, was not a crime. What Moore is accused of is a crime (sexual contact with an underage girl).

At the same time, it's true Moore's opponents shouldn't be focussing on his sexual tendencies. They should be focussing on his wildly incorrect reading of the USA Constitution, and his term as a judge when he was twice removed from his position for ignoring court orders.

It's clear he has no respect for the law, and whatever his sexual misconduct, which can be a he said/she said thing, there is no argument about his violation of the constitution.

The problem there is that the violations in question are popular among Alabama voters. It's not like it was some kind of secret that he was bounced off the state supreme court. It made nationwide headlines both times (and he was reelected to the supreme court the second time despite having been ejected the first). His primary opponent had every opportunity to use that against Moore, and Moore still won the primary (and would've won the general in a landslide had these women not come forward). Placing religion above the law is a selling point in Alabama, not a weakness.

Technically any unwanted touch is a criminal offense, although they are not always easily prosecutable.

Even though Jones is a Democrat, they are absolutely correct to frame the election as one of character. You have one person who is accused of hitting on underage teenagers, and another who vigourously prosecuted the KKK. Should not be a hard choice to make.

Rev Pesky

From Aristotle24:

Given the number of people who ride the subway, I guess unwanted touching is for the most part ignored. However, in the case of Franken, he was not touching. He was miming touching, and that doesn't add up to criminal behaviour any way you look at it.

However, I sadly have to agree with you that the sexual charges against Moore are more likely to affect voters than his deliberate violations of the law, and his (willful) ignorance of the USA constituion.

It's a sad statement about the USA that in a culture that is flooded with sex; sexual images in advertising, sexual imagery in music, simulated sex in the movies, in fact one could say the USA is 'completely concerned with sex', the population as a group profess puritanism.

At the same time, a society which reveres their constitution is unconcerned by a judge who openly violates it's terms.

I suspect there is no cure.

In the first place it is still inappropriate. In the second place, part of the accusations being launched against him is that he kissed a woman suddenly without her knowledge or prior expectaion, so there is physical contact. Just the fact that he wanted a scene where he kissed the woman I find quite ridiculous, not being able to understand why it was so important to him.

The bigger point is one of people in glass houses throwing stones, and that just reminds people of what they hate about politics and politicians in general.

Here I agree with you. I really believe all kissing should be removed from movies, television, and theatre. After all, it is nothing more than some man wanting to kiss some woman.

If Moore wins the Democrats can only blame themselves by not taking the moral high road and getting Franken & Co to step down. Too bad.

Mr. Magoo

Is Moore running against Franken?

If Moore loses, can the Republicans only blame themselves for not taking the moral high road and getting Trump & Moore and Co to step down?

We get that you're mad at Franken.  But he's not every Democrat, in every office, everywhere.  You're trying to fabricate a silly causal narrative to support your own feelings about Franken.

Project Veritas tries to scam the Washington Post re: Roy Moore

False tale about Roy Moore

In a series of interviews over two weeks, the woman shared a dramatic story about an alleged sexual relationship with Moore in 1992 that led to an abortion when she was 15. During the interviews, she repeatedly pressed Post reporters to give their opinions on the effects that her claims could have on Moore's candidacy if she went public.

...on Monday morning, Post reporters saw her walking into the New York offices of Project Veritas, an organization that targets the mainstream news media and left-leaning groups. The organization sets up undercover "stings" that involve using false cover stories and covert video recordings meant to expose what the group says is media bias.

What I'd like to know is how big of a step it is from this type of story planting to just making shit up. Ironically, it is Project Veritas that has made it almost impossible to trust any story about any politician. Way to go, boys.

I'm inclined to agree.  When I read this, I was again reminded of a great scene in the HBO prison drama "Oz", years ago.  In it, the visibly and unquestionably corrupt State Governor was being accused, by an inmate, of purchasing drugs from him.  The Governor held a press conference, and with a series of irrefutable alibis and other actual evidence, demonstrated that no such drug deals happened, or even could have.

Afterward an aide asked the Governor why, when he so clearly had the facts on his side, he even bothered to indulge that inmate with a press conference rather than just ignoring him, and the Governor basically replied that now, if he's accused of something else (implied: something he might actually DO) that accusation will be tainted by the memory of this obvious scam.  Genius, really.
