democracies ALWAYS need an enemy group to "rally" against. Today it's muslims or brown people of middle eastern origin, in the past it's been communists, jewish people, blacks, witches, etc.
the idea is you can only maintain control of people with relative freedom if they have something to be scared of that only a highly militarized and authoritarian group of elites can organize against to save the poor helpless masses.
the sad part is people still fall for it, even when it's so obvious!

Does supporting a two state solution make one a Zionist? The Globe raised the question in an article recently that asked whether the Palestinian Authority using the original partition vote as one of the arguments for statehood is tacitly recognizing Israel.
I had the opportunity to read all of the UN deliberations aroung the Partition when I wrote some undergrad papers many years ago. Fascinating reading. I hope someday to read the equivalent material concerning what is transpiring at the UN now.

It must be difficult to defend Muslims from a progressive POV when some of us actually go along with the imperialist narrative that says 19 "pious Muslims" perp'd 9/11 all by themselves. The American inquisition is a fear campaign that has even a few on the left nodding their heads up and down in rapid agreement with US Government conspiracy theories claiming that the American CIA are actually victims of 9/11 terror. Yes, Elvis bin Laden was once with us, but then he went against us as the imperialist narrative goes. Like a son goes against the father. Terry Jones tried to cross into Canada this morning at the Detroit-Windsor border crossing. He has been detained for three hours. Not sure if he's getting in. The debate at Queen's Park is scheduled for 6 pm. Given the distance from Windsor to Toronto, it's not looking great that this debate will go ahead.
