Trump can't even get a Republican congress in America to repeal Obamacare, let alone order the government of a foreign country to appoint a wanted fugitive as their ambassador.

Assange was either joking, or he has a seriously exaggerated idea of how powerful the POTUS is.

voice of the damned

Always pays to read the whole article. Apparently, Assange didn't think that Australia actually would appoint him, but(if I'm reading it correctly) Trump's request would make Australia, the UK and Sweden treat Assange with more respect.

Still pretty bizarre of him to imagine that such a demand to Australia would have any effect besides making Trump look even more unbalanced.

6079_Smith_W

I did read the whole article, VOTD. It is what he asked them to do. The strategy was in the next sentence, so yeah, I got that too.

Very sorry for the misunderstanding. God, I must have sounded like an asshole there.

Gotcha, and no worries. It is the never-ending problem of online discourse. Kind of funny, because I also would never have guessed, though it makes sense now that you say it.

Give us a link.  Or at least tell us which specific thread you're talking about.  Or, if you must, a specific babbler name.

We know your claims are demonstrably false on several counts. From the Freedom of Information requests made to Sweden and the UK over the past years by the, rare, genuine journalist, Stefania Maurizi, it's clear that the UK was the main block to Sweden (1)taking the case forward and (2)dropping the arrest warrant (for the second time, the first time a Swedish Arrest Warrant was dropped was in 2010).

In the redacted emails (those that weren't destroyed by the UK Prosecution) between the Swedish and UK prosecutors, we also learn that it was the UK that delayed, for years, Sweden's plan to interview Assange in the Ecuadorian Embassy.

Besides costs, evaluating the case (for which there were no charges) was precisely why the Swedish court attempted to drop the case in 2013, but was pressured repeatedly by the UK for undeniably political reasons:

From the Guardian:
Sweden tried to drop Assange extradition in 2013, CPS emails show

The newly-released emails show that the Swedish authorities were eager to give up the case four years before they formally abandoned proceedings in 2017 and that the CPS dissuaded them from doing so.

Some of the material has surfaced from an information tribunal challenge brought late last year by the Italian journalist Stefania Maurizi.

The CPS lawyer handling the case, who has since retired, commented on an article which suggested that Sweden could drop the case in August 2012. He wrote: “Don’t you dare get cold feet!!!”.
....
Marianne Ny, wrote to the CPS on 18 October 2013 explaining that she had few options left. “There is a demand in Swedish law for coercive measures to be proportionate,” she informed London.

“The time passing, the costs and how severe the crime is to be taken into account together with the intrusion or detriment to the suspect. Against this background, we have found us to be obliged to lift the detention order ... and to withdraw the European arrest warrant. If so this should be done in a couple of weeks. This would affect not only us but you too in a significant way.”

Not all the emails are preserved in the exchange, but three days later Ny emailed the CPS again to say: “I am sorry this came as a [bad] surprise... I hope I didn’t ruin your weekend.”

The CPS lawyer wrote back to Ny in December 2013, insisting: “I do not consider costs are a relevant factor in this matter.” This was at a time when the Metropolitan police had revealed that its  from the embassy had already cost £3.8m. “I do wonder occasionally if the police just make public comments because they think it will somehow progress a case,” he wrote.…

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2018/feb/11/sweden-tried-to-drop-assan...

Not the first time the UK interfered in Sweden's atttempt to resolve things, they dissuaded Sweden from interviewing Assange for years in the Embassy:

From the Guardian:

UK prosecutors admit destroying key emails in Julian Assange case
....

The CPS data destruction was disclosed in a freedom of information (FOI) case being pursued by the Italian journalist Stefania Maurizi.

Maurizi, a reporter on La Repubblica who has covered WikiLeaks since 2009, has been pressing both the CPS and its Swedish counterpart for information relating to Assange and extradition.

Unhappy over the limited material released so far, she is taking her case against the CPS to an information tribunal on Monday and Tuesday.

“It is incredible to me these records about an ongoing and high-profile case have been destroyed. I think they have something to hide,” Maurizi said.
....
She unearthed two years ago, through an FOI request to the Swedish prosecutors, an email from a lawyer in the CPS extradition unit on 25 January 2011 saying: “My earlier advice remains, that in my view it would not be prudent for the Swedish authorities to try to interview the defendant in the UK.”[bold mine]

The sentence was redacted in the email obtained by Maurizi from the CPS under an FOI request but not when it was released under an FOI request from the Swedish prosecutors....

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2017/nov/10/uk-prosecutors-admit-destr...

Not surprisingly, given the phony legalistic pretense of the UK, it was the UK Crown Prosecution, not Sweden that redacted, for no legitimate reason, the sentence from 2011:

“My earlier advice remains, that in my view it would not be prudent for the Swedish authorities to try to interview the defendant in the UK.”

As for the sneeringly dishonest  statement by the connected hack Tory Judge that “Assange has restricted his own freedom” despite the UN commision ruling (twice)  that Sweden and the UK were holding him  in de facto “arbitrary detention”, what can be said?  I suppose Assange could simply walk out of the embassy, be arrested by the UK and sent to take his place of “freedom” in a US black hole prison.

We have gone through this enough times that you must know that under Swedish law they can't lay a charge until they have done an interview. That technical point doesn't lessen the seriousness of these rape accusations.

Down to one, now that Assange has waited out the statute of limitations.

And the decisions made by Sweden were their own. Britain didn't force them to do anything.

And again. Please. If Assange hadn't sexually assaulted someone who was sleeping, and refused to use a condom he wouldn't be in this situation. The fact he is bad-mouthing his accusers makes him even worse.

As for what a great "publisher" he is even many on the left won't work with him because of the shit he has pulled.

No matter how many times you repeat BS, it remains BS.
Can't you read, or do you just presume nobody else here can?

a) Sweden DID finally interview him in the Embassy in Nov 2017. And yet charges were STILL not laid by Sweden after 6 years of purported "investigation".

b) Sweden's intention to interview him earlier, at least by Jan. 2011, but was clearly disapproved of by UK Crown Prosecution, (see correspondence posted above).

c) The UK Crown Prosecution Service was clearly coercive and successfully involved in inappropriately directing Sweden's handling of Sweden's case. When Sweden ANNOUNCED definitively it was dropping the warrant in 2013 we get: "Don't you dare get cold feet!", etc. They obeyed. Again, can you read? See post above.

d)The UK abortive raid on the Embassy; the multi-millions of pounds in surveillance illustrate how deeply the UK is involved in getting Assange for political reasons.

e) The corrupt UK legal system had to change its own legal definition of "judicial authority" to mean "a prosecutor" rather than "a judge" to make the European Arrest Warrant valid for this case.

========
Your other anti-Assange remarks are not relevant to my pointing out your legalistic disinformation.

Your contention that sex "allegations" by politically motivated states and media are automatically true, despite the fact that charges were never laid by Sweden's pro-active legal system ---after the interview,  and  after 6 years of supposed "investigation" says more about your real interest in justice.

(For those actually interested in the some basic facts of the (now dropped) case, without  embellishment from either side, there is the "Chronology" which appears in the UK appeal of the EAW in the UK Supreme Court. These are "Agreed on Facts", those mutually agreed on by both the Swedish Prosecution and the Assange defense. Here:

https://www.scribd.com/document/80912442/Agreed-Facts-Assange-Case )

Your argument that many are against Assange therfore they are right is the fallacious Argumentium Ad Populum.

Your referencing the dishonest hit piece by Micha F Lee ( First Look Media) contains many falsehoods. Except for Greenwald, the Intercept has been relentlessly anti-Wikileaks and pro-Russiagate conspiracy theory.

Well this is what the prosecutor said in dropping the investigation last May:

The decision was taken after prosecutors concluded that “at this point, all possibilities to conduct the investigation are exhausted”, Sweden’s director of public prosecutions, Marianne Ny, said on Friday.

“In order to proceed with the case, Julian Assange would have to be formally notified of the criminal suspicions against him. We cannot expect to receive assistance from Ecuador regarding this. Therefore the investigation is discontinued.

“If he, at a later date, makes himself available, I will be able to decide to resume the investigation immediately.”

That doesn't sound to me like an exoneration. I am not sure exactly what in their protocol is in the way of that. But evidently if he made himself available to them the investigation would proceed.

It certainly doesn't sound like what Assange's lawyer said:

“This is one of the happiest days of my legal career. The decision was taken because he was interrogated in November 2016 and could give a good explanation of what happened … This is obviously about consensual sex between two adults.”

Or the lawyer for his accuser, who was not someone politically motivated against him.

“It is a scandal that a suspected rapist can escape justice and thereby avoid the courts,” Elisabeth Massi Fritz told Agence France-Presse in an email. “My client is shocked and no decision to [end the case] can make her change [her view] that Assange exposed her to rape.”

The question is, how much freedom can a person be guaranteed when they have been granted refugee status in another country's embassy?

This isn't simply a case of someone from Whereverland getting refugee status in Canada, and proceeding to post broadsides against the government of Whereverland on a computer with internet hookup, powered by electricity and internet that he pays for himself. This is a case of someone getting refugee status in another country's embassy(ie. government property), and using the electricity and internet provided directly by that country to post broadsides against the governments of other countries.

The governments of the targeted countries may very well regard these broadsides as carrying the endorsement of the host country, since they are emanating from that government's property, paid for by that government's funds. Which would be fine if the host country shares the refugee's desire to antagonize the targeted countries. I wonder if Ecuador shares Assange's goals in this regard.

Okay, thought experiment time.

Suppose some Falun Gong practitioner from China is granted refugee status in Canada's embassy in London, and proceeds to use the embassy's power and cable hookup to post material intended to expose alleged Chinese government wrongdoing, in line with his own personal opinions on China. How many of our Asaange-defenders here would think that the Canadian government is obligated to keep THAT arrangement going?

Not too many, I would think. Even people who agree with some of the criticism of China would still think that it's up to the government, and not some freelancing houseguest, to determine what Canada's foreign policy is going to be.
