Always pays to read the whole article. Apparently, Assange didn't think that Australia actually would appoint him, but(if I'm reading it correctly) Trump's request would make Australia, the UK and Sweden treat Assange with more respect.
Still pretty bizarre of him to imagine that such a demand to Australia would have any effect besides making Trump look even more unbalanced.

We know your claims are demonstrably false on several counts. From the Freedom of Information requests made to Sweden and the UK over the past years by the, rare, genuine journalist, Stefania Maurizi, it's clear that the UK was the main block to Sweden (1)taking the case forward and (2)dropping the arrest warrant (for the second time, the first time a Swedish Arrest Warrant was dropped was in 2010).
In the redacted emails (those that weren't destroyed by the UK Prosecution) between the Swedish and UK prosecutors, we also learn that it was the UK that delayed, for years, Sweden's plan to interview Assange in the Ecuadorian Embassy.
Besides costs, evaluating the case (for which there were no charges) was precisely why the Swedish court attempted to drop the case in 2013, but was pressured repeatedly by the UK for undeniably political reasons:

a) Sweden DID finally interview him in the Embassy in Nov 2017. And yet charges were STILL not laid by Sweden after 6 years of purported "investigation".
b) Sweden's intention to interview him earlier, at least by Jan. 2011, but was clearly disapproved of by UK Crown Prosecution, (see correspondence posted above).
c) The UK Crown Prosecution Service was clearly coercive and successfully involved in inappropriately directing Sweden's handling of Sweden's case. When Sweden ANNOUNCED definitively it was dropping the warrant in 2013 we get: "Don't you dare get cold feet!", etc. They obeyed. Again, can you read? See post above.
d)The UK abortive raid on the Embassy; the multi-millions of pounds in surveillance illustrate how deeply the UK is involved in getting Assange for political reasons.
e) The corrupt UK legal system had to change its own legal definition of "judicial authority" to mean "a prosecutor" rather than "a judge" to make the European Arrest Warrant valid for this case.

Well this is what the prosecutor said in dropping the investigation last May:
The decision was taken after prosecutors concluded that “at this point, all possibilities to conduct the investigation are exhausted”, Sweden’s director of public prosecutions, Marianne Ny, said on Friday.
“In order to proceed with the case, Julian Assange would have to be formally notified of the criminal suspicions against him. We cannot expect to receive assistance from Ecuador regarding this. Therefore the investigation is discontinued.
“If he, at a later date, makes himself available, I will be able to decide to resume the investigation immediately.”
That doesn't sound to me like an exoneration. I am not sure exactly what in their protocol is in the way of that. But evidently if he made himself available to them the investigation would proceed.
It certainly doesn't sound like what Assange's lawyer said:
“This is one of the happiest days of my legal career. The decision was taken because he was interrogated in November 2016 and could give a good explanation of what happened … This is obviously about consensual sex between two adults.”
Or the lawyer for his accuser, who was not someone politically motivated against him.
“It is a scandal that a suspected rapist can escape justice and thereby avoid the courts,” Elisabeth Massi Fritz told Agence France-Presse in an email. “My client is shocked and no decision to [end the case] can make her change [her view] that Assange exposed her to rape.”

The question is, how much freedom can a person be guaranteed when they have been granted refugee status in another country's embassy?
This isn't simply a case of someone from Whereverland getting refugee status in Canada, and proceeding to post broadsides against the government of Whereverland on a computer with internet hookup, powered by electricity and internet that he pays for himself. This is a case of someone getting refugee status in another country's embassy(ie. government property), and using the electricity and internet provided directly by that country to post broadsides against the governments of other countries.
The governments of the targeted countries may very well regard these broadsides as carrying the endorsement of the host country, since they are emanating from that government's property, paid for by that government's funds. Which would be fine if the host country shares the refugee's desire to antagonize the targeted countries. I wonder if Ecuador shares Assange's goals in this regard.

Okay, thought experiment time.
Suppose some Falun Gong practitioner from China is granted refugee status in Canada's embassy in London, and proceeds to use the embassy's power and cable hookup to post material intended to expose alleged Chinese government wrongdoing, in line with his own personal opinions on China. How many of our Asaange-defenders here would think that the Canadian government is obligated to keep THAT arrangement going?
Not too many, I would think. Even people who agree with some of the criticism of China would still think that it's up to the government, and not some freelancing houseguest, to determine what Canada's foreign policy is going to be.
