Violence in Canada: elderly woman attacked by known violent passenger in transit for elderly and disabled

Does it say anywhere in the article that the driver DIDN'T intervene?

From what I can tell, the main issue being raised by disability-advocates is that the woman was being transported in the same vehicle as a man with a known propensity for violence. Which is a valid point, though what exactly is the proposed solution? Set up a separate service for clients with a history of violence?

Drivers often have a very strict policy about not physically interphering with passengers even if it's to prevent a crime. Driver could have lost his job for violating that rule if it's in his contract.

If you have a history of violence, you get driven separately with no other passengers and the driver has a protective separator. This would be a fair solution that would both allow the individual to receive the transport he needs while protecting other passengers and the driver, but it makes too much sense. So the STM will likely allow violent people to continue beating up on old ladies.

Déry is a liar and should be removed from his post plain and simple, they knew the man was violent and didn't care because they wanted to save some money.

quizzical

if he is violent on occasion then the driver is not safe.

you guys must remember what happened to mom a fee years back? driving a van with a violent mental health client and ended up with 9 skull fractures and a broken neck. was attacked while driving too.

violence in vehicles needs to be addressed. in my mom's case there was supposed to be a 2nd person while transporting but the agency wanted to save on wages as he hadn't been violent towards my mom ever.

this young guy should have to have a escort while travelling on transit.

I'd love to meet up with the bastard who did this. Throw him in jail and throw away the key. There is the solution. This violent fuck should be put in a cage  like any other dangerous animal..

Mr. Magoo

Well, if you do meet up with him, go easy.

When officers arrived, they found the male passenger still sitting in the back of the cab doing a crossword puzzle, seemingly unaware of what he'd done. Montreal police spokesperson Insp. André Durocher told Go Public the man has an intellectual disability and won't be charged.

Sounds like that this transportation company is only concerned with profits

I expect this situation, and others like it, will arise with increasing frequency.  As we age a growing number of us develope different forms of demetia. For some people this is experienced as fear and paranoia. Some people lash out. As I have been  encountering these situations more often in the last 2 years I have been appalled to learn that  the health care system in Ontario has no services, housing, support services etc in place to support people in these situations. Nursing homes  quite rightly will not take them and a troubling number end up in the criminal justice system with no where to go.

Thanks, Meg, for moving the thread. "Violence in Canada" means nothing. I could talk about the last mafioso killed in Laval a couple of nights ago. This is a specific problem connected to mental health (the violent young man was intellectually disabled but could have also  had mental health issues, which develop at all intelligence levels).
