I seriously doubt the US will go to war with Venezuela over some diplomats. If so they would have done it already.

They wouldn't be going to war over diplomats, they would be using an assault on their embassy as a casus belli to give them colour of right in their planned war of aggression. Remember the Maine!

Thanks for these updates. The fact that Canada has supported a self declared leader of a country has serious legal implications.

Whether or not Maduro won fair and square is something to be considered in their country´s courts and public opinion, not by outside politicians.

I wonder what the position of the other political parties in Canada may be?

But a legal determination must be made if in fact Canada has violated its obligations to the UN Charter......

The NDP’s foreign critic has stayed quiet regarding the US/Canadian campaign against Venezuela’s elected government. I found no criticism by Hélène Laverdière of US/OAS leaders’ musing about invading or the August assassination attempt on Maduro. Nor did I find any disapproval from the NDP’s foreign critic of Canadian sanctions or Ottawa’s role in the Lima Group of anti-Venezuelan foreign ministers. Laverdière has also failed to challenge Canada's expulsion of Venezuelan diplomats and role in directly financing an often-unsavoury Venezuelan opposition. Worse still, Laverdière has openly supported asphyxiating the left-wing government through other means. The 15-year Foreign Affairs diplomat has repeatedly found cause to criticize Venezuela and has called on Ottawa to do more to undermine Maduro's government.

“The question of who is to lead Venezuela should be in the hands of Venezuelans.”

Singh’s statement came after Niki Ashton, an NDP MP from Manitoba who has run twice for party leader, condemned Canada’s recognition of Guaido.

“Trudeau sides with Trump’s regime-change agenda and Brazil’s fascist president in support of someone calling for a military coup in Venezuela,” she wrote on Twitter, referring to Brazil’s right-wing leader, whose country joined Canada, the U.S., Colombia, Peru and others in recognizing Guaido Venezuelan president.

“We cannot support an agenda of economic or military coups,” she wrote. “#HandsOffVenezuela.”

Party veteran Svend Robinson, who has returned to politics and is running for a seat in British Columbia in this year’s election, echoed Ashton’s statement on Thursday. Speaking on Parliament Hill, he said there are “serious concerns” about repression of dissent and free speech in Venezuela, but that it is “shameful” that Canada’s government is recognizing “an illegal coup” in the country.

Robinson also pointed to the history of U.S. interference in Central and South America, including the attempted invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs in 1961 and support for the military dictatorship in Chile when it took power in the early 1970s.

Former U.N. Expert: The U.S. Is Violating International Law by Attempting a Coup in Venezuela

As President Trump announces that the U.S. will recognize opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela’s new leader and sitting President Nicolás Maduro breaks off relations with the United States, we speak with a former U.N. independent expert who says the U.S. is staging an illegal coup in the country. Alfred de Zayas, who visited Venezuela as a U.N. representative in 2017.

quote:

ALFRED DE ZAYAS:

Now, we have had, for the last years, actually, a media campaign against Venezuela. And I am particularly familiar with it, because before I went to Venezuela, I had to read everything and all the reports, not only of The Washington Post and of The New York Times, but also the reports of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the reports of Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, etc., proposing that there was a humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.

Now, when I went to Venezuela, I again took the opportunity to interview representatives of Amnesty International and PROVEA and the other opposition NGOs, but I also had the opportunity to study the documents, to compare, to see the statistics, etc., etc. And, of course, there was no humanitarian crisis. There was hunger. There was, what we say in Spanish, zozobra. There was suffering. There was malnutrition, etc., etc. But it’s not just stating that there is an economic crisis. That’s not the crucial point. The crucial point is which are the causes of that so-called humanitarian crisis. And certainly, those who are crying humanitarian crisis should be the least to say that they should now solve the problem. There’s a principle of international law called ex injuria non oritur jus, which is the principle to estoppel. So they should be estopped from demanding regime change when they themselves are the ones who are aggravating a situation, caused initially by the dramatic fall of the oil prices.

I wanted to make a reference to a professor, Pasqualina Curcio, of the University of Caracas. I had the opportunity of seeing her for a couple of hours when I was there. And she published a book called The Visible Hand of the Market. This is a book that documents the financial blockade, documents the whole complex economic war being waged against Venezuela, which reminds you of the economic war that was waged against Salvador Allende. And what’s interesting is, after three years of economic war against Allende not succeeding in toppling Salvador Allende, it took a coup d’état by General Augusto Pinochet, which brought the Chilean people 17 years of dictatorship.

We should be asking ourselves: Do we want a coup d’état in Venezuela? And what legitimacy would the government of Guaidó have? And what kind of elections would be held? Now, there have been, as I said, 26 or 27 elections in Venezuela since 1998. And President Jimmy Carter and the Carter Center went repeatedly to Venezuela to monitor those elections. And Carter had a very good opinion of the system and of the safeguards of elections in Venezuela. So, if the opposition really considers itself democratic, it has to play the democratic game, and it has to participate in the elections. They have chosen to boycott the elections over the last years.

Mexico backs Maduro as Venezuela president amid crisis

Mexico still backs Nicolas Maduro as Venezuelan president, the government's top spokesman said Wednesday after the head of Venezuela's opposition-controlled legislature declared himself interim president.

"We recognize the authorities elected in accordance with the Venezuelan constitution," Jesus Ramirez, spokesman for Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, told AFP.

He later wrote on Twitter that Mexico was "analyzing the situation in Venezuela."

"For the moment, there is no change in our diplomatic relations with the country nor its government," he said.

The United States and several Latin American countries, including Brazil, Colombia and Peru, all announced their backing for Guaido as interim president.

Mexico, the world's largest Spanish-speaking country, has taken a hands-off stance toward Venezuela under Lopez Obrador, a leftist who took office in December and has said his foreign policy is based on the "principle of non-intervention" in other countries' affairs.

Mexico was the only member of the 14-country Lima Group -- which includes several top Latin American powers and Canada -- not to sign a statement on January 4 calling on Maduro to transfer power to the democratically elected legislature, instead of starting a new term six days later.

That marked a major diplomatic shift for Mexico, which had been one of the most outspoken critics of Maduro's socialist government.

If the NDP wants to be taken as a defender of the right to self determination then it will start telling it like it is and not doing the usual well both sides are bad so what do we do. The people of Venezuela had an election and the asshole who wants to be a US puppet did not run.  I was not on the ground but I trust a monitoring group from Canada for my facts before I trust the opposition forces who refused to participate in democracy.

Raul Burbano of Common Frontiers said the organization, which sent observers to monitor the Venezuelan presidential election in May of 2018, also took issue with Ottawa’s assertion that the election was a sham.

The Canadian delegation, which was composed of members of Unifor, the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, The United Church, Common Frontiers and Rabble.ca, concluded in its final report that the May 20, 2018 elections “were fair, transparent and represented the will of the Venezuelan people.”

However, opposition politicians in Venezuela decried electoral fraud and contested the official results, which showed that Maduro won with nearly 68 per cent of the vote, well ahead of his nearest rival Henri Falcón, who received nearly 21 per cent of votes.

No. Fun fact: In the last election Guaido ran in, in 2015, he got 97,492 votes, or 26% of the vote, in his seat. Definitely a ringing democratic endorsement from the Venezuelan people.

kropotkin1951

Why don't you try reading the fucking report before spewing of your bullshit. The link is in the article and it isn't that long. The opposition is not interested in elections they are playing games instead of trying to win elections. When the biggest bully on the block is in your corner it makes you strut more. There are real people in Venezuela that will die if this coup becomes a civil war. Your imperialism is nauseating.

After nearly two years of peace negotiations between the government and the opposition parties, an agreement was reached in early February 2018, called “ Agreement of Democratic Coexistence for Venezuela.”

It established a political, economic, and social framework to solve the country’s problems. Included in the agreement was a date for elections and extended electoral guarantees. That same week former U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson while on a tour of Latin America openly called for regime change in Venezuela. On February 21 some coalition parties announced a boycott of the elections while other members like Progressive Advance (AP) did not boycott. “The premature and unconditional event that is announced for April 22, 2018 is just a show of the government to pretend a legitimacy that it does not have,” said opposition coordinator Angel Oropeza at a press conference.
