The [quote] tag and other annoyances

When we use the [ quote ] tag, the first paragraph following the quote is in bold, for no good reason.

EDITED: Yet, when I try to reproduce the bug now, everything works out fine!

QUESTION: Did the tech gods of babble anticipate my post and fix the problem before I even posted it?

Time to pump up my monthly donations!

If anyone else knows what I'm talking about, please elaborate. But maybe this example will show what I mean:

Nope. It seems to have more to do with line spacing of text after the quote and /quote tags.

Yay!

Ok, I'm testing Meg's thesis:

Quote:
No line space after opening or before closing tag.

Quote:

Line space after opening but not before closing tag.

Quote:
Line space before closing but not after opening tag.

Quote:

Line spaces in both places.

Here goes nothing...

[CONCLUSION:] That's amazing! Thanks, Meg. But even though I know how to do it now, others shouldn't need to be coached. There must be a simple way to fix this coding issue. [Famous. Last. Words.]

Anyway, to whom it may concern: If you're using the [ quote ] tags, leave line spaces before and after your tags - that's the easiest way to avoid the problem.

I'm now testing the block quote function:

The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs.

Ah, that one seems to work without tweaking! Good.

It's not ideal, I know, but the formatting of quotes on babble is so far down the list of tech needs it isn't likely to be addressed any time in the near future. Limited budget, time constraints, etc.

What tech needs are they currently working on?

I fully understand. But you know - it used to be good, and it got wrecked. That really should never happen. Improvements may be slow in coming, but if it ain't broken, please please don't fix it.

While we're on the subject...why is it that we STILL can't delete dupe posts?  Sometimes we accidentally hit the post thing twice, and instead of just being able to make the dupe disappear, we have to manually erase the text and then type "self-delete, dupe post".  Why can't we just delete a post if it's a dupe or if we just don't want it there?

Mr. Magoo

Does the board software support the removal of a (specifically) duplicate post?  Is this a switch that can be flipped to "allow", but it's currently set to "deny"?

I'm only asking because it's possible that enabling the deletion of a dupe post could also mean enabling the deletion of ANY post.

And I'd personally much rather sometimes see "dupe post" or similar than see some tantruming babbler delete every post they ever made and leave all sorts of "holes" in threads all over the board.

If the software will allow the removal of a post if it's the same as the post directly above it, then let's enable that.  Or if the software will allow the removal of a post within (say) ten minutes regardless of content then let's enable that.

But in the real world, if you engage in a conversation with a group of people, there's no way, six months later when you're mad at them, to somehow nullify your participation, and I don't really think babble needs that.  People who are angry enough at babble are free to leave, but they can't take history with them.

The tech needs required to run a site of this size and complexity on a shoestring budget. I'd compile a list but that would neither be particularly useful nor a good use of my limited paid time here.

It has to do with permissions and maintaining the integrity of the site and its archives. I can remove content if warranted or requested.

The last upgrade, which was necessary for a variety of reasons, affected babble in unanticipated ways. Hours and hours of tech time went into the upgrade before, during and after it went live. That work is ongoing. I've tried to address issues with the tech team, with moderate success, but some things remain problematic. Like the quote function. I have all kinds of issues that don't affect babble users but affect the way I do my job behind the scenes. Again, ongoing.

We're working with a new tech company now, post-upgrade, and it'll take some time for them to become familiar with all the site's needs.

NDPP

I think the site was actually better before the upgrade.

If we could delete a post (rather than just it's content), this would change the numbering on all subsequent posts. If someone refered to a previous post by number and then the number changed, this could get confusing.

ex. Post #20 refers to post #10 by number. The post #3 gets deleted. All subsequent posts get lowered in number by 1, so the post that post #20 referred to by name is now shows as #9, and the old post #11 now shows as #10.

No reason not to allow deletion of a post -- just make it so they keep the number assigned when created. a gap means one was deleted...

Mr. Magoo

My original question was just whether or not this is a feature that's already supported by this board's software (but has presumably been switched off).

Personally, I don't love the idea of deleting posts (redundant duplicates notwithstanding).  We create conversations collaboratively, and choosing to remove your contributions to the whole is a bit like helping Habitat for Humanity build a house, then later deciding you want to tear out all of "your" boards and nails.  Just my $0.02.
