Flagged for turning a noun into a verb.

It is well-known that all nouns can be verbed. See:

Rebecca West wrote:Flagged for turning a noun into a verb.

Double-flagged for flawed grammatical diagnostic.

'Crackpot' is a noun - as is the word 'pot'. But 'Crackpottery' is also a noun - as is 'pottery'.

The first is singular noun, the latter is a collective noun. Alternatively, the first is the simple article, - the latter is the craft or profession.

Bottom-line: I think we are safe to go with the interpretation that Bacchus takes pride in being a professional crackpot.

That won't get me flagged, will it?

True, it's not a verb, but I think Rebecca was noting that Bacchus had transformed an object into a process. He processified crackpots, thus earning a flag. We have standards to uphold here.

FWIW, I have given up on flagging our Babbling Chinese shoe salesman ... but gotta "admire" the determination.

Maybe if someone would just order a pair, s/he would move on?

Unionist

I actually ordered a left boot but received a right boot. Our spammer has obviously mastered the subtleties of our electoral system.

At this point I only see four posts from him.  He's slowing down.

I'm tempted to just start promoting these threads on Facebook and Twitter and then bill Nike for my time. They must pay better than rabble.ca based on our friend's tenacity.

Bacchus

Affiliate sales pay big bucks CF. You can net 50-100 per sale should someone click on your spam

sherpa-finn

Aaaarggghhh! Soon as you guys sorted out the Nike Sales, they moved on to false passports and novelty items!

Go get 'em CF!

Ken Burch

There is a poster spamming the boards now with offers to provide fake passports and id from various countries.  These need to be removed A.S.A.P.,because they could unfairly implicate Rabble/Babble in the poster's probably criminal activity.

Ken Burch

Here's a partial list of the threads this poster...calling him or itself "Billjacksonville03" has already spammed:

Hey lagatta, check your PMs!

Yes, Disqus has certainly brought the trolls (context on the recent change to comments on articles can be found here). We have deleted many, many comments, particularly on feminist blogs. Gross.

The commenting policy, which is based on babble policy, will be upheld -- so offensive, right-wing, trolling, etc. comments will be removed. If you flag it, a mod will see it. In comments, the mods are not only Meg and me, but also the other editorial staff. Plus, if readers flag a single post multiple times it will disappear until a mod reviews it. So there is some crowd-sourced moderation too.

Weekends can be a bit of an ask for us though...[/pity plea]

lagatta

I flagged the posts by this Grace Joubarne at Michael Stewart's blogpost on tiny houses. In the troll's second comment she actually insinuates that I am ignorant.

The book she cites is a far-right, conspiratorial anti-environmental screed.

I do hope the blogs are moderated as well. Problems are rare there, but I fear that since they are on discus, more trolls will be popping up.

lagatta

Oh, I know. But I confess I was having evil fantasies - no, not murder or mayhem, just finding her "full-sized home" and ordering a LOT of pizza. In nicer weather, a load of earth is good too. Would be fishy this time of year.

wow. Crowd-sourced moderation. Way cool.

I don't know.. I do see some potential for abuse.

As in, you can actually shout someone down if you have a couple of sock puppets or co-zealots. Not good prospects for someone who has an unpopular, but perfectly legitimate opinion.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

That wouldn't take long to figure out if moderators can read the internet location of the complainant. And then all the accounts would be identified to be closed, banned, or whatever.

ETA: something organized would be found out and a waste of resources. Unless it was automated.

Slumberjack

Where will this leave babble if the writing is not already on the wall so to speak with this change?

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

Hey, does babble still take a dim view of "ironic racism" ? I called babbler kropotkin on this issue and it would be useful to confirm (or deny) that that is the policy.

I seem to recall that we had some loutish trolls who took this approach and had to be cut off at the knees. I don't recommend that for kropotkin. Maybe just break his legs.

If his knees were broken, wouldn't he have to goose step?

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

My question is serious. Kropotkin posted a disturbingly anti-Russian racist post on the Russophobia II thread and then pleaded that it was an "ironic" post on his part, that I was ignorant, etc., for daring to criticize his "obviously" humourous post, and a whole confederacy took the opportunity to chime in and noisily agree with him, also taking the opportunity to denounce yours truly, etc.

In the past, as I recall, "ironic racism" was used by babble trolls to post odious views and then use the old ruse of "It was just a joke, you're humorless and should drop dead,"  etc. , etc.  but my memory is not completely clear on the matter.

Mods? Hello?

alan smithee alan smithee's picture

Offensive posts are subjective. Others are blatant.

I've been told to fuck off,I've been called an idiot,an asshole..But to be fair I've done the same thing in the past when I was going through my mental meltdown because of the Tory majority.

Never once did I flag them for it. Actually I think I only flagged one post but for a very petty reason.

I apologize to those I've attacked without an educated debate. I'm still an angry camper but I refrain from personal attacks as much as possible (unless I'm provoked) but that doesn't happen much anymore.

Opinions are lke assholes. Everyone's got one and they shouldn't be muzzled unless they are blatant trolls.

Anyway, enjoy your day, whoever you are,and remember, for the most part we're on the same team.

I want to point out some extremely offensive macho and ecocidal posts under Yves Engler's blogpost on carcentric development:

 http://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/yves-englers-blog/2017/04/montr%C3%A9als...

These misogynist and ecocidal posts are clearly counter to rabble and babble policy. Why are they allowed? Please repatriate the blogs to ensure moderation by rabble staff.

Indeed the Comments section has some real crap in it but Yves blog itself, while condescending to motorists, was okay.

lagatta4

How was it "condescending" to motorists?

Obviously people need those polluting things in rural or remote areas, but the vast majority of drivers, and the vast majority of vehicular pollution, come from urban and suburban areas, not farmland or remote areas.  Even countries such as the Netherlands or Denmark, which have done much to discourage individual, urban use of private cars, have provisions for farmers, foresters etc.

kropotkin1951

It fails to even acknowledge that it is not a lack of awareness that keeps many people driving. If you are an inner city person in Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver and never have a need to leave the inner city then you have sufficient transit to do without a vehicle but that is not the situation for many people in metropolitan areas.

I lived in the Lower Mainland for twenty years and both my wife and I worked in jobs that often required us to go to multiple meetings in a day and have the flexibility to leave the office for emergent situations. We both drove hybrids as a comprimise. Most people aren't in the same situation and when you start commuting between the inner cores and the burbs between the burbs and exurbs it gets very difficult to do without a vehicle. After work its one thing to take transit home but if you have to stop at the daycare and the grocery store and then get your older child to a sports practise there is just not enough time to take the transit systems in any of our major cities.

Mr. Magoo

The button died around the same time as flip phones.  You just PM Meg now.

Thanks. Highly underestimated, flip phones.

I still have my flip phone.

I still have my Blackberry Rim 857. Don't use it, but it still works. No flip, no phone.

NDPP

'Mass Genocide of Mohawk Children By UK Queen and Vatican'

Why is this awful drivel still being advertised on Rabble's 'Recommended For You' sidebar?

MegB

Probably because the editorial team don't see it as awful drivel. You might want to submit a comment on it expressing your editorial opinion. It has nothing to do with babble.
