If Labour had gone all-out backing the unwinnable fight for a second referendum, it would have lost the same amount of votes to the Brexit Party it lost to the LibDems and Greens.  There's no way that stance could have helped Labour-and taking it would have meant abandoning the entire Labour program, since nothing Labour can be done within current EU rules and the EU can't be changed.

Ken Burch

Good thing I just noticed in the NI local elections:  UKIP lost all three of the councilliary seats it was defending.

To avoid confusion, you should consider changing the thread title here to "United Kingdom Local and Euro-election results".  The UK isn't holding a general election right now.

NorthReport

I think those May 2, 2019 local election results are devastating for Labour, and that if they don't change course they could be replaced by the Liberal Democrats, as the main opposition to the Conservatives, or the Forage Party, or whoever is going to run as the Brexit Party for the right-wing.

He’s doing it intentionally to sew the “confusion.”

Belgium: far-right surge in national parliament elections

The far-right Flemish separatist party, the Vlaams Belang, looks set to make gains in Belgium’s national parliament.

Belgium has also held a “Super Sunday” of European, national and regional elections. The results are expected to entrench divisions, with Dutch-speaking Flanders forecast to move right, while French-speaking Wallonia goes left.

According to partial results published by the Francophone national broadcaster, the Vlaams Belang is up 13% in the federal parliament, while the centre-right Flemish separatist party, the New Flemish Alliance, has increased its vote share by 6%.

The big loser appears to be the Francophone liberal party of prime minister Charles Michel. His Reformer Movement party is down 8.5% according to RTBF.

Cyprus: ruling Disy party set to win

Over in Cyprus, the EU’s most easterly member state, counting has begun after voting concluding at 6pm local time with exit polls indicating that for the first time ever a Turkish Cypriot will win one of the six seats reserved for the island nation – a massive boost for those who support Cyprus’ reunification.

Niyazi Kizilyurek, an academic at the University of Cyprus, was fielded by Akel, the main opposition leftist party in the Greek-controlled south and has been campaigning on both sides of the divided island.

Akel is on track to come in second with between 27-30.5 percent of the vote after the ruling Disy party at a close 28-31.5 percent of the vote, according to exit polls. In another encouraging sign for progressives, exit polls are also showing that the far right ELAM party, an offshoot of Greece’s neo-Nazi Golden Dawn, has failed to pick up enough support to send an MP to the European parliament.

UK: counting gets underway

Amy Walker

The count for the south east of England is now underway at Southampton’s civic centre. Nigel Farage, who has been an MEP for the constituency since 1999, is expected to arrive at the venue after 9pm.

The first turnout figures for the UK show the area covering Birmingham at 31.1% (down from 32.4% in 2014), while the turnout for the south east in the European elections is 39.36%, which is up from 36.3% in 2014.

England: Emily Thornberry criticises Labour election strategy

The shadow foreign secretary, Emily Thornberry, has criticised Labour’s election strategy.

Appearing on the BBC’s election coverage, she said:

We went into an election where the most important issue was what was our view on leaving the EU and we were not clear about it. We were not clear on the one single thing that people wanted to hear.

We should have said quite simply that any deal that comes out of this government should be put to a confirmatory referendum, and that remain should be on the ballot paper, and that Labour would campaign to remain. I think that we will after these elections need to look very carefully at why it is that we got this result.

UK: Greens gains indicative of continent-wide call for action, says Lucas

Amy Walker

The Green party has made gains in the south-east, largely beating Labour into fourth place so far, with the Brexit party victorious and the Liberal Democrats in fourth – leaving the governing Conservative party in fifth place.

Speaking at Southampton Civic Centre, Caroline Lucas the MP for Brighton and Hove, described the results as “incredible” and indicative of “a Green wave across Europe.” She added that it was clear voters wanted “action not just inside the EU” but also on the “climate”.

Turnout: highest voter participation in 20 years

Turnout across all 28 member states, including the UK, has risen to 50.5%, the European parliament has announced.

This is 8 points higher than in 2014.

The 2019 turnout is the highest of the last 20 years and the first significant increase in turnout since elections began in 1979.

The parliament’s chief spokesman Jaume Duch Guillot said:

The European citizens realised that the European Union is part of their everyday reality and future. This time they voted.

Reality check:  33.5 million voted in the referendum.  Looks like about 20 million voted in this election.  But I understand that with remainers, the lesser vote wins.  Also the Labour Party has committed to leave based on the 2016 vote.  It couldn’t support remain without changing that official position.

NorthReport

UKers don't want Brexit, and the polls show it.

If Labour wants the Lib Dems to be the main opposition to the Cons or the Brexit Party, by all means keep doing what Labour has been doing till now.

LOL.  Yeah, that’s why Labour’s been in first place for two months.

If staying in the Banker’s Union is the most important thing, let them vote Lib Dem.

In Britain, Farage's Brexit Party storms to EU election victory

The country’s two main parties, May’s Conservatives and the opposition Labour Party, hemorrhaged support while smaller pro-EU parties did well: the Liberal Democrats were in second place, according to a BBC projection.

Nearly three years after the United Kingdom voted by 52% to 48% to leave the EU, it remains a member and its politicians are still arguing over how, when or even whether the country will leave the club it joined in 1973.

There are some people here that would like to see a Labour government win the next election, but if you take a look at the popular vote the political parties opposed to Brexit are receiving the Liberal Democrats are way ahead of Labour and the Greens are only about 1.55% behind Labour. These are devastating results for Labour and definitely not a good omen for the next general election. Sometimes it's wise to bite the bullet, admit you were wrong, and get on with it.

I think you should take that last sentence to heart.

Who's supposed to admit they were wrong?  The government or the electorate?

If the government (and here I mean all of it, not just the party in power) wants to bite the bullet and admit something, I'd settle for them all admitting that they've spent 3 years fruitlessly trying to fashion Brexit into some sort of partisan advantage for themselves rather than making a good faith effort to follow through on the referendum mandate.

The results so indicate a lead for the unambiguous Remain part is over the unambiguous Leave parties, at least in the popular vote.

Brexit 31.6% + UKIP 3.3 = 34.9

LibDem 20.3 + Gr 12.1 + SNP 3.5 + Plaid 1.0 + ChUK 3.4 = 40.3

polls have shown that 80% of Labour’s voters favour Remain ( 14.1 x 80 = 11.3) as well as 1/3 of Conservative voters (9.1 x.33 = 3)

that gets the Remain vote up to 54.6%, which is very consistent with recent polls.

It seems to me that roughly half of UK’ers want to stay in the EU while the other half want to leave but under differing conditions varying from a very soft Brexit to no deal at all. Maybe UK’ers should be given the chance to vote on a specific option versus remaining in the EU? Would a very soft Brexit satisfy most Leavers?

Mr. Magoo

Quote:
Would a very soft Brexit satisfy most Leavers?

Would officially leaving NATO, but continuing to supply them with troops, expertise and resources satisfy those who want Canada out of NATO?  What if it was "way less" troops and stuff?
