EU considering trade sanctions on Brazil over wild fires

Not really sure where I stand on this one? But I’m leaning on siding with Brazil and other South American countries

Do other South American countries have a position? The article mentions only Brazil.

The forests are a common heritage and responsibility of humanity. Reforesting Germany (as Bolsonaro suggests) is definitely needed, as anyone who has experienced the Schwartzwald will know. But will not replace old-growth rainforest that exists in tropical areas (Brazil, Indonesia, Congo and other African countries, etc). But Germany and Europe have a responsibility to help pay for preserving rain forests, it is not Brazil's job alone.

(Obvioulsy, Brazil's near-fascist regime is not even trying to do the job. Who does a better job at protecting forests? Venezuela. https://globalforestatlas.yale.edu/amazon-forest/regional-governance/forest-governance-venezuela)

Bolsonaro is not a good leader (reflected in his current unpopularity) and an even worse human being. I fully support whatever pressure can be brought to bear on him to stop his destructive policies, including that of the Amazon rainforest. That said, you want to be careful that applying pressure in these situations doesn't cause people in Brazil to feel under seige and to want to run to their leader for protection. Didn't Rodrigo Duterte's party win recent mid-terms in The Philippines? I'm sure one factor was that Canada had just been caught sending boatloads of garbage and he told us to take it back.

voice of the damned

Is there a specific set of things that the EU wants Brazil to do, eg. "Put out Fires X, Y, and Z that are burning in the following locations..", or is it just "Brazil needs to do a better job putting out fires"?

i pulled this out of the link I provided

"There is no way that Ireland will vote for the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement if Brazil does not honour its environmental commitments," Irish leader Leo Varadkar said on Friday.

The trade deal that the EU wants to alter is with South America. I haven’t heard Argentina’s (second largest SA country) position, or any other SA country, only Brazil.
This is a real tough issue! It’s not Brazil’s job to clean the co2 out of the Earths air that was put there by other nations.
Germany France England and the US among others have been industrialized and burning fossil fuel for a very long time. But for some reason(actually a obvious reason) never mention the total retroactive amounts of co2 they dumped into the atmosphere.

Bolsonaro has suggested that Europe is acting like imperialists. And I agree with him!
Unfortunately Macron’s big stupid mouth is going to give Bolsonaro a second term.
If Brazil had a communist government that controlled all its resources, it would be better able to protect them.

Ok I found a link with more details

Bolsonaro accused the EU of a colonial mindset and not imperialism as I had suggested above.

Bolsonaro is a nightmare and bolstered by his prominance in the Lima Group that sadly enough Canada (Trudeau, Freeland) supports.
