CLOUD 9 - a comedy of multiple organisms

By Caryl Churchill Directed by Alisa Palmer

Starring Evan Buliung\, Ben Carlson\, Megan Follows\, David Jansen\, Ann-Marie MacDonald\, Yanna McIntosh and Blair Williams

CLOUD 9 by Caryl Churchill (Top Girls) is an audacious\, award-winning play that wraps gender-bending characters and outrageous portrayals of sexuality in thought-provoking satire. Political and sexual oppression are explored in a time-twisted structure\: 100 years pass between acts set in British colonial Africa and modern-day London\, with recurring characters aging a mere 25 years. Come experience the exhilarating world of CLOUD 9\, where age\, gender\, race and sexuality are defined and re-defined.

DESCRIPTION:

What do you mean by diversity of tactics?

Diversity of tactics means support for each others' chosen method of resistance while not threatening the lives of those around us. It is a way by which we hope to create space for the realization of tension\, uncertainty\, action\, humour and beauty as we strive for new ways to engage with each other and against a common enemy. While we may practice one tactic or action\, we do not chose yours. As participants we agree to leave the policing of tactics to our oppressors\, not our comrades\; we will not attack each other for using methods that are not our own. Through a diversity of tactics we are stronger and more cohesive towards our goal of giving Capitalism a massive coronary.

SUMMARY:Is Marx back?
DESCRIPTION:

The economic crisis\, as many commentators and critics are quick to point out\, has rekindled interest in-and anxieties over-Marxism. Although many on the Left hope this renewed curiosity marks the beginning of a radical turn\, similar revivals of anti-capitalist politics in the 1930s\, 1960s\, and 1990s failed to achieve the revolutionary transformations they sought.

Has Marxism returned as a significant political force? How might this translate into the possibility for a revitalized Left? Will the resurgence of Marxist theory provide opportunities for social change-or merely the opportunity to fail again?

Join us for a provocative and thoroughgoing discussion of these and other questions.

This event is free and open to the public.
