Green Party names Georges Laraque as Deputy Leader

Quote:
The federal Green Party is hoping a former NHL tough guy will help beef up the party's presence in Quebec.

Green Leader Elizabeth May on Saturday named Georges Laraque as a deputy leader of the Green Party of Canada.

The 260-pound former Montreal Canadiens enforcer joined the Greens last February but his role has been undefined until now.

The announcement is part of an attempt to gain traction in the province.

Laraque joins Adriane Carr as a deputy leader of the Greens, replacing Jacques Rivard, who jumped to the Bloc Québécois in June.

Is Rob Ford "chicken" to debate Smitherman in Toronto mayoral race?

The Toronto Star and Globe and Mail would have us believe that Rob Ford is "chicken" not to debate George Smitherman (top two poll runners in mayoral race) in Toronto recently. Also they are shooting him down for an alleged verbal assault at a high school foortball game in 2001?

George Smitherman at Jazz Fest

But why is that Ford will not debate Smitherman one on one? Ford says it's because he wants to decide when they should debate and I agree.

New Version: On Legitimate and Illegitimate Protest

Ok all you babblers,

I have heard from many people who read the original version of this piece. In response to all your thoughts, I significantly reworked it to include new ideas that people shared with me and to clarify the most important ways we need to build solidarity right now.

Given the ongoing need for unity as we continue to work to get our friends out of jail, get all the charges dropped, and build the movement from within, seems like a good time to post this new and updated version.

water rights & other activism: Canadians have to reach out to teach US citizens

There is a huge push to force Canada to sell water as a commodity... its probably best for Canadian activists to be doing some gentle education for US activists if we want to educate the US about water issues & the impacts to regional ecology,

before the US media & divisive politicians begin to accuse *Canadians* of hoarding (aka, 'how dare you reserve the right to not trade or commodify!') a human right... which should be an essential commodity of trade for 'American Interests'... obviously, the US has corporate interests best suited to managing the resources for those backward, dumb & selfish Canadians...

Who's running, who should be for the ONDP in 2011

We have a federal page, so I figured with the election a little over a year away, why not throw up a provincial NDP nomination page.

I wasn't at the TC AGM but apparently Cathy Crowe is thinking of running again, anyone who was there have any word on that?

On Legitimate and Illegitimate Protest

http://toronto.mediacoop.ca/node/3883

Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.
Frederick Douglass, 1857

This page grows out of dialogue with many community members between the Vancouver Olympics in February and the Toronto G8/G20 in June. It needs saying.

Anarchist propositions

For those who describe themselves as anarchists, I thought a discussion might be of interest surrounding belief systems, variations of Anarchist sentiments, and the apparent divergence when it comes to aims and tactics, the 101s as it were, according to the respective adherents.
