Dr. Homa Hoodfar is a renowned feminist anthropologist who teaches at Concordia University professor. She was in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison from June 6, 2016 to September 26, 2016.
Hoodfar is well known for her writings as a feminist scholar and about Islam and women in the Middle East. She was in Iran visiting family and doing some research when, two days prior to her scheduled flight back to Canada, Dr. Hoodfar’s home was raided and her passport and computer confiscated and she was imprisoned. Among other human rights abuses, she was denied a lawyer of her choice, denied family visits, and was reportedly in poor physical health.
Homa was finally released due to international pressure but, according to a report released by Amnesty International, the Revolutionary Guard in Iran has been intensifying its repression of women rights activists since the 2015 election, where many women advocated for a stronger role in Parliament for women. Endangered Scholars Worldwide and other groups are tracking scholars in prison and helping to support scholars and their freedom. We need to pay attention to the broader repression that activists and scholars are facing worldwide.
