February 14th marks the Annual Women’s Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Women. You can take part in this event in locations across the country. It’s the 23rd year for the event, which honours missing and murdered women from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. These incidents occur as a result of physical, mental, emotional or spiritual violence and abuse, and in many cases the victims are Indigenous women.

The goal of honouring the memory of missing and murdered women has created memorial marches across the country, everywhere from Edmonton to Thunder Bay. Many marches across the country are in partnership with Indigenous advocacy groups or those working alongside the families of missing and murdered Aboriginal women.

While many of the memorial activities take place on the 14th, there are several action days on surrounding days. Ottawans have the opportunity to join Sisters in Spirit for their Annual Day of Justice on February 13th – this year the event will be a smaller and more intimate gathering in the evening – while a walk will happen on Saturday, February 15th in Victoria, B.C.
