What is McCain going to do to top Palin’s stemwinder from last night?
He’s not.
I heard this morning that the stage is going to be completely different tonight and that he’s going to have a townhall-like “conversation” the TV viewers. My guess is that he’s going to directly after [b][i]the middle voters[/b][/i]—the ones who are going to decide this election in eight weeks (on National Public Radio this morning, a poli-sci prof said that about 20% of the electorate is undecided).

So I'm wondering if there's any coded distinction between being a "Hockey mom" and being a "soccer mom". There are a few possibilities. There is the benign one, that there's no difference and her kids played hockey rather than soccer, which is not impossible. Another one is that hockey has a message of a more expensive sport where poor kids can't play, but my american roommate told me yesterday that was too far fetched as most americans are too unfamiliar with hockey to know it's expensive. It could also be she wants the positive impressions of soccer mom without some of the negative connotations that have grown attached, and maybe changing the label will work.

The possibility of it being a nefarious “coded message” is extremely unlikely. As your American roommate said, most Americans (unfortunately) don’t know anything about hockey and have never even seen a live game of hockey, let alone know that the sport is expensive.
Besides, most families that I know who have kids who play hockey are just average Jane and Joe Family.

It will be interesting to see the polls in the next day or so to see if Palin’s speech helped McCain.
After the wonderful speech that Obama gave in Denver, there was no opportunity to see what impact that speech had on voters (I suspect it would have been very positive). About twelve hours after Obama’s speech (eight of which people spent sleeping), McCain introduced Palin as his running mate and that sucked all of the media air out of Obama’s sails.

People can say what they want about Jon Stewart, but last evening on the Daily Show, he made some pretty good attacks against the Repubs and their hypocrisy. He took on Rove's hypocrisy extremely well.
The funniest things were about the Repub Senator Thompson that Jon pointed out sounds and looks like Foghorn Leghorn and Lieberman who sounds and looks like Droopy Dog, thus establishing them as cartoon characters and not just any cartoon characters, but Looney Tunes ones.

Just as the double standard over teenage pregnancy is not just racial in the obvious sense, but also in a coded message to white supremacists that white people can still have lots of kids to buck "demographic eclipse" and replenish their presumedly rapidly depleting ranks.

The hockey mom label does not need all Americans to be experts. This is a very close election, and if it just has a significant effect on say one American in ten then that is all that is needed for victory.
Btw, hockey is most popular in the Midwestern states, which happen to be all the most important swing states minus Florida (Michigan Ohio Pennsylvania and Minnesota).

A lot of them are. The Blackhawks have a 19,000 seat arena in a metro area of about 10 million people and they can't sell it out. Even here in Minnesota (the "State of Hockey"), I'm amazed at how many people have never been to a hockey game before.
I suspect that the rough order of popularity in America you'd find:
1. NFL football
2. NASCAR
3. College football
4. MLB baseball
5. NBA basketball
6. College basketball
7. PGA golf
Hockey sits way down somewhere with boxing, soccer, and tennis.

Again, you should learn to read. The wiki article says that hockey is the fourth most popular [b][i]team[/b][/i] sport. And, that is a distant fourth team sport.
In a country with over 300 million people, the Stanley Cup in 2007 only had a 1.1 TV share in America (only about one million households watched it). That's a microscopic share.

I've heard my partner descibe herself as a hockey mom, in certian situations. But then again she plays and coaches hockey and could knock most hockey dads on the tim bit arses, so maybe that's different.
I don't think it is code for anything, just a way of saying I am involved in my kids life. Of all the things she has said that I found offensive, this ain't one of them.

He called them pin heads even. But not so it seems for Palin, and the hyprocrit Repubs, it seems they do not blame Palin at all!
And the Repubs carried on and on about Bills' blowjob in the White House and the message it would send to children, yet think nothing of the message that Palin's drop out of school pregnant teen age daughter would send to teenagers across America.

It would seem like McCain's speech was worth not much eh?! Not even a little buzz of what he said, on here, compared to Palin's of last night!
ETA: Just saw the last portion of MCcains speech, and his walking off of the stage. His movements looked doddering, or something less than vigorus and responsive to his commands. Is this campaign going to be too much for him physically?
