Evo Morales wins yet another term as President of Bolivia.

With over 60% of the voters, unheard of numbers in the Empire and its vassal states, Evo Morales has won another victory as President of Bolivia.

Evo Morales wins AGAIN.

ikosmos ikosmos's picture

errata: that should be "nearly" 60% (59.5%) of voters.

Yay Evo! We could do with more political leaders like him.

Quote:

The failure of opposition forces and critics to recognize or accept that a political revolution that has taken place explains why they are so far out of touch with the majority of Bolivian society.

Predictions by pollsters and commentators that Evo Morales would easily win Bolivia’s October 12 presidential elections were confirmed when the incumbent obtained over 60% of the vote.

Most however differ over why, after almost a decade in power, Morales’ Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) continues to command such a huge level of support.

Their explanations tend to focus on specific economic or political factors, such as booming raw material prices or the MAS’ ability to control and co-opt the country’s social movements.

However, to understand why Morales will soon become the longest serving head of state in a country renown for its history of coups and rebellions, it is necessary to start with an acknowledgement of the profound changes that Bolivia has undergoing under his presidency.

Gwynne Dyer: The truth about Bolivia’s and Brazil’s economic miracles

TO NOBODY’S GREAT surprise, Bolivia’s president, Evo Morales, has won a third five-year term by a landslide majority. It’s no surprise because Bolivia’s gross domestic product (GDP) has tripled since he took office in 2006. The number of people living in poverty has fallen by a quarter, even the poorest now have the right to a pension, and illiteracy has fallen to zero. Of course he won.

What has happened in Bolivia seems as miraculous as what happened in Brazil, where another left-wing president, Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva, took office in 2003. The economy started growing at five percent a year, unemployment fell steeply, and some 40 million Brazilians, almost a quarter of the population, were lifted out of poverty. Lula’s former chief of staff and successor as president, Dilma Rousseff, is also likely to win another term in office.

Is there some secret they share? Many other South American economies have been growing fast too, but without the dramatic change in the distribution of income that has happened in Brazil and Bolivia. Even the late Hugo Chavez’s “Bolivarian revolution” in Venezuela, for all its anti-imperialist rhetoric and despite the country’s great oil wealth, has not delivered a comparable transformation in the lives of the poor.

. . .

So should we hail the arrival of a new and better model for economic growth and social justice? Unfortunately, no. The only economic secret that Lula, Dilma, and Evo all share is that if you want the economy to grow, you must not frighten the horses.

The international markets got ready for a meltdown when Lula, a self-taught former trade union leader with a penchant for radical rhetoric, became president of Brazil, but he turned out to be the very soul of fiscal responsibility. And although Morales nationalized a large part of the Bolivian economy—oil, gas, tin, and zinc mining and key utilities—he negotiated deals that compensated foreign investors and kept the markets happy.

I guess this is a good place to report on another election with a far better outcome than in Canada.

The left-wing leader claimed victory on Sunday night adding that “most importantly, we again have an absolute majority in the chambers of Deputies and Senators. That is the result of the consciousness of the Bolivian people.”

Morales counted on the rural vote, which took more time to be counted but handed him the so awaited victory to lead from 2020 to 2025. His party will also have a majority in Congres meaning governance will not be blocked by opposition parties.

Bolivia's Military Chief Calls on President Morales to Resign After New Elections Announced

Morales agreed to new elections but was still forced to resign.  Which can only mean a coup.

My crime is to be a union leader, to be indigenous,” Morales said in his resignation speech, adding that he was the victim of a coup and calling for the international community to investigate.

Clearly, either the thread title needs to be change or a "Military Coup in Bolivia" thread needs to be started.  Gods and reason help the people of that country-especially the Indigenous majority who may be about to be stripped of everything they've gained with Evo in power.  Please let this not be a repeat of the misery inflicted on Haiti, on Nicaragua in 1990, on Chile in 1973, on Brazil in 2018 and before the in 1964 on the Dominican Republic in 1964, on Guatemala in 1954, on all the other Latin American nations prior to that.

The lines Phil Ochs wrote and sang over half a century ago ring sadly true tonight-

"We own half the world, o say can you see

And the name for our profits is "democracy"

So like it or not, you will have to be "free"

For we're the cops of the world, boys,

We're the cops of the world."

Quote:

Bolivian President Evo Morales was forced to resign Sunday after senior army and police chiefs called on him to do so following weeks of right-wing unrest and violence against his Oct. 20 elections victory, in what his government has called a coup by opposition forces in the country.

“I decided to resign from my position so that Carlos Mesa and Luis Camacho stop abusing and harming thousands of brothers ... I have the obligation to seek peace and it hurts a lot that we face Bolivians, for this reason, so I will send my letter of resignation to the Plurinational Assembly of Bolivia,” the former president of Bolivia said in a press release.

Babble's favored liars and stupifiers?  You mean nothing about RT that cheered when Trump was elected with Russian support?  A right-wing government with Elliot Abrams in charge of Latin policy?  Not to say that the Democrats are clean, see Honduras, but going back to the 1970s they've been far less inclined to support regime change than the Republicans.

And Morales gave then an opening by challenging the results of the term limits referendum,  Why so many of these leaders come to believe they're indispensable, no matter how good they are, is too often a fatal flaw,

Bolivia’s Lithium-Powered Future

The global demand for lithium, used to make batteries for cell phones, laptops, and hybrid cars, is expected to triple in the next 15 years. 50-70% of the world's supply of this critical mineral is contained in just one place -- Bolivia's Uyuni salt flats.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

Evo Morales didn’t resign; he was overthrown by a coup d’état.

Quote:

As of today, Evo Morales, the Indigenous president of Bolivia, was forced to resign the presidency. His Vice President, (Alvaro Garcia Linera) also resigned, as did Adrianna Salvatierra, the President of the Senate, who was supposed to assume the presidency in Morales’ absence. At the time of this writing, the Wiphala Indigenous flag, has been lowered throughout the country by the opposition. Morales, the country’s first Indigenous president, is the standard bearer of generations of Indigenous socialists. His removal represents the return of the old oligarchy. This is a coup against the arrival of the Indigenous peoples of Bolivia to the forefront of history.

For weeks, rightwing protestors have targeted Morales’ party, the Movement Toward Socialism (or MAS in Spanish). They have burned down party members’ homes and offices, attacking their supporters.  Recently Patricia Arce, mayor of Vinto, was kidnapped by a mob. They cut her hair, threw paint over her body, and forced her to walk barefoot, publicly humiliating her. The mob has blockaded the headquarters of Bolivia TV and the Patria Nueva radio station. At the time of this writing, right wing forces are ransacking and burning President Morales’ home and are trying to arrest him.

This is not a resignation. No one resigns with a gun to their head.

Bolivia’s political and economic elite support this violence, as part of a resurgence of the far right in Latin America. Activists on the ground are currently getting smashed by these forces. We, the undersigned, denounce this violence, and preemptively denounce the violence that will inevitably escalate in the street. We call on the United Nations to make a statement denouncing the undemocratic nature of the coup and the strong-arm tactics of its backers.
