Israeli police fired rubber bullets and tear gas inside the Al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem on Sunday after worshipping Muslims objected to around 450 Israeli settlers being allowed into the holy site despite it being the first day of Eid al-Adha. The Muslim celebrations coincided with the Jewish holiday of Tisha B'av, which sees an increase in Jewish visits to the Al-Aqsa compound. The Israeli actions broke up the festival atmosphere inside the area as thousands of Muslims worshippers had gathered to celebrate Eid al-Adha.

On a hill just south of the Old City lies a 54-hectare thriving pine forest, located within the Palestinian neighbourhood of Silwan - one of occupied East Jerusalem's most ghettoized areas, owing to Israeli government and settler initiatives.

The park, named the "Peace Forest," is for many visitors a tourist attraction, promoted as a "natural treasure" in the wider Israeli City of David archaeological site open to the public.

The forest was created and named shortly after Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967, by the Jewish National Fund, an organisation that financially supports illegal Jewish settlement projects targeting Palestinian neighbourhoods.

Since the 1970s, the area has been zoned by the Israeli government as "green," meaning construction there is prohibited.

In 1977, the government handed control of the City of David project to the El-Ad Jewish settlement group.

The area of Wadi Yasul in Silwan, housing over 500 residents, has been slated for demolition by Israeli authorities.

With nowhere to expand over the decades, the residents of Wadi Yasul have had to build without difficult-to-obtain Israeli permits, subjecting them to demolition orders and displacement.

Rejecting ongoing Republican attacks accusing Democrats of being insufficiently pro-Israel, Hoyer said: “The central reality is that there is extraordinary unity on issues that Israel is very concerned about.” He noted that a large majority of the Democratic caucus voted in favor of a resolution condemning the Global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement. The Anti-Defamation League’s Ken Jacobson wants you to believe that I called Israel racist in my recent article “The Real Reason So Many Republicans Love Israel. Their Own White Supremacy.” “Characterizing Israel as fundamentally racist,” he claims, constitutes one of my “arguments.”

But he has a problem. I didn’t call Israel racist because that’s not what I believe. I called it an “ethnic democracy.” Jacobson calls that a “euphemism” and says my real “intent is unmistakable.” No, “ethnic democracy” and “racist” are different. He’s confusing my motives with his ignorance.

Israel is a democracy inside its original, pre-1967, boundaries because it holds elections in which virtually everyone can vote. It’s an ethnic democracy because it has a special obligation to protect and represent one ethno-religious group: Jews. That means that, even inside the green line, where Palestinians (sometime called “Arab Israelis”) enjoy Israeli citizenship, they lack all the rights of Jews.

In a series of Tweets on Friday remarkable for their clarity and honesty, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has laid out Israel’s crimes and abuses of Palestinians.

On Thursday, Israel confirmed that it would bar Omar and fellow Democratic lawmaker Rashida Tlaib from traveling on a congressional delegation to Israel and the occupied West Bank.

The information Omar provides will not be new to many readers of this publication. But it is almost unheard of for a member of the United States Congress to use their platform to make it available to an even wider audience.

In an attempt to prove to a mostly shielded American audience the facts of the Israeli occupation, Omar often uses Israeli sources to document Israeli abuses and violations of human rights and international law.

Such sources can be valuable, but one hopes her exceptional courage will also mean she can use more Palestinian sources to document what their occupiers do to them.

Her recommendation that Twitter users follow the human rights group Al-Haq is an excellent start.

Over the last couple of months, Israeli society has been in the throes of a protest movement against police violence led by Ethiopian Israeli youth, who refer to it as their Black Lives Matter moment. In July, an Ethiopian Israeli teenager named Solomon Tekah was shot to death by a police officer in a town near Haifa, and thousands of young Ethiopian Israelis took to the streets demanding equal treatment and an end to police violence. A building that serves as a home and restaurant in a village near Bethlehem has been bulldozed by Israeli forces, on a site where houses have been razed twice before.

Israeli authorities gave the building's owner, Ramzi Qaisiyya, a notice saying the building was constructed without the correct permits.

The two earlier buildings on the same site were demolished under the same pretext, the Palestine News Network reported on Monday.

Israel called in reinforcements to Al Makhour, north-west of Beit Jala, after a woman confronted soldiers, said Hassan Brejiya, head of the Wall and Settlement Resistance Committee in Bethlehem.

The woman clung to the balustrade of the building's top-floor balcony as Israeli soldiers try to force her away from the building.

Then the bulldozers moved in to level the two-storey home.

Mr Brejiya condemned the demolition, accusing Israel of clearing the area to expand its settlement projects.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday renewed his pledge to annex all Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank as he reached out to right-wing voters ahead of a 17 September election and amid allegations of corruption.

Netanyahu and his Likud party have been working to maximise turnout and wrest votes from other right-wing parties close to the influential settlement movement, AFP said.

“With the help of God we will apply Jewish sovereignty to all communities, as part of the land of Israel, and as part of the state of Israel,” he told an audience at the West Bank settlement of Elkana.

He did not say when he planned to make such a move, Reuters noted.

More than 1,000 Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip “are suffering from severe bone infections developed in the aftermath of being shot by the Israeli army”, according to a new update by global medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

MSF said it is “dealing with immense challenges” treating those shot by Israeli forces during protests in the Gaza Strip, including bone infections that add “to the already complicated path to recovery that these injured people must tread”.

More than 7,400 Palestinians have been injured by live ammunition during the protests, MSF stated, “with around half suffering from open fractures, where the bone is broken near the wound”.

“Gunshot wounds by their very nature are prone to infection,” MSF said.

In recent weeks, the West Bank witnessed numerous operations against the Israeli occupation. The West Bank is already a volcanic crater without such provocative visits and it is not unlikely for a new intifada to break out. It is also not unlikely for the city of Hebron to mobilise against the hundreds of settlers who live in it. The West Bank has enough reasons to explode, but no one can predict when that will come.

Amnesty International is calling out the discriminatory regulations taken out on Palestinian members of Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, for undermining “their ability to represent and defend the rights of the Israeli Arabic minority population in Israel.”

In a new report published on Wednesday, the human rights organization details how Palestinian MKs, unlike their Jewish counterparts, face systemic discrimination in the form of Knesset regulations, legislative changes, and bill proposals aimed at silencing them.

The report comes just two weeks before Israel heads into its general election, during which the Joint List of Arab parties in Israel are poised to win 10-12 seats — making them the third largest party in Israel.

The 17-year-old Palestinian, who lives in a refugee camp in Lebanon, arrived just in time to begin his undergraduate degree at Harvard.

The Israeli Supreme Court on Monday voted by a 4-3 majority that Israel has the right to withhold the bodies of 13 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in its custody and be used as bargaining chips.

The ruling states that emergency regulations allow the Israeli military to order the temporary burial of the bodies of Palestinians classified as enemies “based on considerations that take into account state security, civil order, and the need to negotiate for the return of the bodies of Israeli soldiers”, the Legal Centre for Arab Minority Rights in Israel (Adalah) said in a statement Monday.

One of the lawyers on the case was told Monday morning that a verdict would be reached in the afternoon, without being given any more details.

“We understood that the political context and the timing, that it would be a negative decision and not in our favour as Palestinians,” said Salwa Hamad, the head of Jerusalem Legal Aid Center’s legal campaign, which is fighting for 116 bodies.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does like a visual presentation.

There was this one, and that Trump one, and of course, the bomb one.

And as Israelis prepare to vote next week in the second general election they’ve had this year, Netanyahu has been at it again.

This time, it’s a map of the Jordan Valley, the occupied West Bank region which Netanyahu is promising to annex to Israel should he lead the next Israeli government.

Now, as has been pointed out many times, people will say almost anything to get elected.

Ban Muslims. Build a wall. Leave by Halloween, “do or die.”

It doesn’t necessarily mean anything, and Netanyahu is not above a little campaign hyperbole, unbounded racism, or indeed war mongering if it helps galvanize his voters.

Nevertheless, his promise to annex the Jordan Valley, and the revelation that he would already have done so had it not been for the Israeli attorney general, provoked angry denunciations from around the world.

Lately we’ve seen a great deal of institutional effort to show that American Jews are all for Israel, except the lunatics.

–The American Jewish Committee says the Jewish group, IfNotNow, is a “radical fringe.”

–The Jewish Federations in Seattle actually blocked a $1000 gift to IfNotNow from a family fund it advises because it would damage the goal of building “a cohesive Jewish community” and undermine Israel as a Jewish state.

IfNotNow are young Jews generally with strong communal upbringing who are demanding an end to Palestinian occupation after 52 years.

–Next week Bari Weiss’s book comes out saying that All good Jews celebrate the rebirth of Jewish sovereignty in Israel, except for a handful of enemies within: “a very small but very vocal group of Jews seems as deeply opposed to Jewish interests as many of our community’s enemies.” Anti-Zionist Jews, she says, are anti-Semitic.
